Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments Although we have tried to capture all the Nordic Noir authors, we are infallible! So, who did we miss???

message 2: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ three of my favorites that I didn't see listed are Camilla Lackberg, Arnaulder Indraoson and Jo Nesbo.

message 3: by Naomi, the Sanity Check (new)

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments Are you sure...did you look at the longer list..I think I put AI and JN on there myself!

message 4: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Okay found the list sorry but here is one that is not on it. Karin Alvtegen.

message 5: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Also three more that I read and like, Helena Tusten - The Glass Devil and Anne Holt, she has a new one coming out soon, 1222 and I believe is new herself, at least to the US and Peter Hoeg,The Quiet Girl. I'll stop now.

Dee (austhokie) | 652 comments nah - keep doing diane...the more the merrier

message 7: by Rachelle (new)

Rachelle I am only familiar with Jo Nesbo. I read The Snowman and absolutely loved it. I look forward to exploring new authors that I learn of in here.

message 8: by Naomi, the Sanity Check (last edited Aug 22, 2011 05:09AM) (new)

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments Hands down..James Thompson..probably one of the most twisted I have ever read..that is one of the reasons I am stalking him from several thousand miles! I would be remiss to say it was Karin Fossum and Haken Nessar who turned me onto this genre though.

Wow, Diane..those are all new authors to me..

message 9: by MARILYN (new)

MARILYN (MARILYNJ) | 80 comments Naomi, I agree about James Thompson being twisted. I loved Snow Angels.

message 10: by Diane S ☔ (new)

Diane S ☔ Don't see Kjell Eriksson on the author list and I just bought home The Hand That Trembles and he also wrote The Princess of Burundi, his main character is a woman detective named Ann Lindell.

message 11: by Naomi, the Sanity Check (new)

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments Oh, we will have to add him, Diane..I was looking at his stuff the other day.

message 12: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (mrsshorty) | 4 comments I quite like Yrsa Sigurdardottir not quite as gritty and gruesome as some of the Nordic writers, but her books are well paced and great to curl up with on a wet Sunday afternoon.......maybe because of the noir she wouldn't be included but I'm new to this site so please forgive me if I'm in the wrong

message 13: by Naomi, the Sanity Check (new)

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments Do you want to start a thread for her under authors, Sandra, since you are so familiar with her works.

message 14: by Helen (new)

Helen | 15 comments Started with Steig Larsson and really enjoyed that. Then moved on to Jo Nesbo, so far have read the first four translated into English. Really enjoyed them especially The Redeemer. Plan to read the next 2 when I get a chance. Currently reading Henning Mankell, first read the first three Joel Gustafason novels and now starting on the first Wallander novel. Also loved watching The Killing (Danish version)' US version not as good. Any ideas for next authors?

message 15: by Naomi, the Sanity Check (new)

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments Uhhh, Helen..how did you get your hands on the Danish version? We are all drooling over here.

I am a big fan of Karin Fossum, Hakan Nesser and James Thompson..those are always who I recommend first.

Cuppa Joe | 10 comments Rachelle wrote: "I am only familiar with Jo Nesbo. I read The Snowman and absolutely loved it. I look forward to exploring new authors that I learn of in here."

Jo Nesbo's The Red Breast starts somewhat slowly with a WW2 backstory, but now I'm 3/4 into the book and enjoying it very much.

message 18: by Naomi, the Sanity Check (new)

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments I think that is one of my favorites by him, Joe. I liked the mix of Historical fiction and current mystery and how the two fed into one another.

message 19: by Jack (new)

Jack Blackbourn (jackyb1992) | 2 comments Arnaldur Indriðason, Jo Nesbø, Stieg Larsson, Henning Mankell...

message 20: by Laura (new)

Laura My favorites are Stieg Larsson and Mankell but I've never read any book by Nesbo, not yet.

message 21: by MARILYN (new)

MARILYN (MARILYNJ) | 80 comments I plan to read Jar City by Arnaldur Indriðason next. I have had the book for a long time so it's really time to read it. I need to finish off 2 books 1st.

LMBO!! Truer words...never spoken!!

message 27: by Nidia (new)

Nidia (ninio) | 57 comments So far I've discovered Stieg Larsson, Hakan Nesser, Jo Nesbo and Henning Mankell and I have really enjoyed them all but my favorite so far is probably Jo Nesbo.
I'm looking forward to discovering new authors through this group which makes me believe my TBR list will also grow!

message 28: by Dee, the Insanity Check (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 652 comments as a recommendaton for you guys - I have a personal bookshelf called Nordic Noir and using the new recommendations tool, I have gotten recommended some new authors...(they won't all be nordic, but they are supposedly noir)

Welcome..yeppers..the old tbr list will grow...right Laura!

message 30: by Mary (new)

Mary I think Henning Mankell is my favorite with Jo Nesbo a close second.

Naomi (nblackburn) | 932 comments Marjorie wrote: "I still like the classic Martin Beck mysteries by Maj Stowall and Per Wahloo a lot -- although I am not sure they are "noir," they are certainly "Nordic." I re-read Roseanna recently..."

Marjorie..you nailed it with CL's books..that is why I have such a hard time with them..you are right that they are much more romance/women's lit than true NN

message 32: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (elliearcher) I love the Stowall and Wahloo books-especially The Laughing Policeman. I also like Nesbo and Karin Fossum (assuming she's Nordic Noir). I haven't read any Lackberg and what I'm reading here isn't making want to run out to read her.

I also am loving Jussi Adler-Olsen & can't wait to read more. And I liked the Stieg Larsson trilogy.

Obviously I have a lot of work to do.

I never thought of Peter Hoeg as Nordic Noir, but I adore all his work.

message 33: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) I've only read Larsson so far & have Nesbo in the wings but I'd like to thank everyone on this thread for increasing my TBR list so much... seriously, thanks a bunch ;P

message 34: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthas48) LOL I know what you mean!! My list was huge already, but now!! I can't wait to finish some of the books I'm reading now so I can start Snow Angels.

The book shop people are going to think I'm up to something when I next go in and buy books - I'll blame it all on you guys :P

I now can't wait to start The Redbreast and I have so many before then :(

message 36: by Erik (new)

Erik Don´t know if Mons Kallentofts books are translated to english, but I think he fit the profile as noir. Some people think his books are a bit weird.

message 37: by Erik (new)

Erik Mons Kallentoft

Midwinter Sacrifice

Thats the first in the series, and also answers my question about translation

message 38: by Jan (new)

Jan Wallcraft | 21 comments One of the very few I've not liked so far.he gives the dead person a voice. I don't much like that. Also too psychological for my taste, rather like Karen pFossum.i much prefer the classic police procedural, like the Beck series, Persson, and Helene Tursten

message 39: by Helen (new)

Helen | 55 comments Would David Hewson be considered Nordic Noir. I read the Killing and I am at present reading The House of Dolls He displays some elements. Jury still out on him for me.
