Lizzie | 13 comments If they're library books then i use the receipt. If not I have 2 Harry Potter book marks from Hot Topic, I really want to get a Hunger Games one.

I never dog ear a book, unless it's a textbook, when I buy a used book I always go through and smooth out the corners if there are any bent.

message 102: by Connie (new)

Connie (corelia) | 11 comments I have used tissues (clean ones, of course :P ), sticky notes, index cards, empty gum wrappers, computer paper, pencils/pens, yarn... and yes, even the dreaded dog-ear on occasion. And even more rarely, actual bookmarks. :P If I'm reading in bed and about to fall asleep, I just turn the book upside down on my page.

Joei Hossack | 50 comments I try and make one or two new bookmarks every evening and I'm still in love with the photography that goes into it along with choosing the beads and putting them together. Even came up with a few new designs this pas week. Check them out at www.etsy.com/shop/BookBlingbyJoei

I like that idea! I think I'll begin doing that.

Bee (mzzbookworm) | 4 comments I usually use my book covers to protect my book to get bend or page damages that have the bookmark already.. is very helpful

Nicole D. (thereadingrebel) | 130 comments I have a few nice store bookmarks I use those mostly. Some times I use extras of trading cards I collect and buy these really cheep bookmarks for like 1.50 for 12 on amazon and have those all over to grab when I need them.

Joanne (bonfiggi) My daughter just gave me a bookmark of inlaid wood, with a Pileated Woodpecker painted on it. Lovely.

Laura | 55 comments Proper bookmarks. Not so much magnetic ones, but more the old-fashioned papery ones.

message 112: by Ottery (new)

Ottery StCatchpole | 4 comments I can't dogear things, seriously, I love books too much. That said, I'll use bookmarks, I'm always picking them up at my local libraries, or the slips of paper they print when I check out a book, or whatever piece of paper is lying around. I can't stand magnetic ones, i don't think they'd stay in the books and those ones that are like clips neither again because they bend the pages or tear them (my wife has a very ornate butterfly one that is beautiful but will tear the paper since it weighs so much more than the paper that's supposed to be holding it up).

But mostly bookmarks, I love collecting them too. Not too fond of buying them though LOL

message 113: by Paulfozz (new)

Paulfozz Fiona: the book depository still do send out bookmarks, I have a few I've received from them this year.

I have a thick leather bookmark that I bought years ago. I used to use it a lot but not really anymore as I did find it was too thick and either fell out or distorted the book. I like it when the local charity shop gives out bookmarks with their books, I horde those! :-)

I should say, in case there's a difference, that it's the UK book depository site that I've been buying from, not the US one.

message 120: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (hobbitual_reader) I've got two oriental art-style bookmarks and a 3D one with Penguins on it (I love Penguins as much as books)

message 121: by Maureen (new)

Maureen | 12 comments Until my now ex-boyfriend moved out rather suddenly and unexpectedly two months ago, I used to use his medical bracelet from when he had to go to the hospital about 3 years ago.

Now I use a book mark I made by laminating leaves, or a bookmark from an advanced book copy. I didn't like the book, but somehow I managed to keep the book mark. ::shrugs::

Robin Peck (mrs_auger) | 2 comments I recently found a DIY origami corner heart bookmark tutorial on youtube! Super easy and super cute. I used some spare scrapbook pages I had laying around the house and these little bookmarks are so easy to use :]

message 123: by Jersey (new)

Jersey (jersesaurus) | 8 comments I always lost my bookmark and if I really need one, I usually rip a piece of paper to use as substitute. But right now, I printed this picture that says "Between the pages of a book is a lovely place to be." Cut it out and paste it on cardboard to harden it. (If I found time though, i like to lamenate it or something.) It's what I'm currently using though. :D

message 124: by Kadijah Michelle (new)

Kadijah Michelle (kadmich) I love to use pictures of my kids as book marks. When I am taking notes, I use a highlighter so i can mark the section and can find quickly find the part that I noted (I'm a college student, so I always need citations). I used to buy beautiful bookmarks, but I always lost them because I carry the book I'm reading everywhere I go.

message 125: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 363 comments If its a library book I use the printed receipt they give me. All the other books I use whatever I come across paper clips, post it notes, scraps of paper. I had some metal ones that were really pretty but I lost all of those.

message 126: by Joseph (new)

Joseph D'Agnese (josephdagnese) I tend to use bookmarks. You know: Usually ones you get from bookstores.

message 127: by Nelleke (new)

Nelleke (nellekie) | 4 comments It is funny about reading of dog-earing, was just looking for the english word for it, in dutch it is called donkey-earing. I never do it myself. But when I borrow a book from the library I re-use the dog-ears who were already made by other people. For my own books I use receipts from shops. I also use them to write down page-number and beautiful sentences. I use to have beautiful bookmarks, but they always get lost.

Lára | 175 comments Oh just anything. Plant leaves, piece of paper, newspapers, other book, cards ... I don´t really care as long as it serves. I have proper bookmarks from bookstores and libraries but since I always read more then three books at the time, it´s never enough of them.
I have some books I´ve been reading since 2011. so most of my bookmarks are in use.

I agree with you Joseph except last time I went to The Dollar Tree and paid one dollar for a pack of 24, not fancy but works just as good.

Lára | 175 comments Afsana wrote: "i take it the book you have been reading since 2011 ae non fiction? how do you recall what is occurring? "

Oh no! quite the opposite. I´m reading The Sword of Shannara. Not demanding but not compelling either. I read about 10-30 pages per year but I promised myself I´m going it finish it this year. The other one was Taltos by Anne Rice and I finally picked it up last month, and it´s soooo boring that I gave up at last. (I did not remove the bookmark, though.)

And I´m still reading N. Gaiman´s M is for Magic. I tend to read a couple of stories per year. Then there´s Maggie Stiefvater´s Linger that I´m not motivated to finish at this time, but maybe one day. Since characters and the story are simple, I´m sure I won´t be having problems with recalling things.

Non fiction is my main genre, and I always finish it in one to three days. (;
So far I´ve been having problems only with fiction books

message 137: by Renee' (new)

Renee' (allmyhearts) | 1 comments I guess I am a bit too detail oriented. I do not want my pages bent from a paperclip or folded at all. I love the A-style magnetic bookmarks or a re-purposed flat item. Pretty paper scraps, napkins or receipts work in a pinch.

message 138: by Melody (new)

Melody I've a small collection of bookmarks from online bookstores that I use.
Sometimes a Frank Frazetta gollum trading card
Right now, a business card I picked up at the Montreal comic-con with a zombie Marilyn Monroe on one side.
And a bookmark my daughter cross-stitched for me of Frodo and Sam with "There and back again" (my favorite)
In a reference book I'll use post-its

Never dog-ear or lay in open. Too uptight for that.

Karen (seaayre) | 6 comments Actual bookmarks, postcards, sales slips, envelopes, takeout menus--whatever is at hand that won't damage the book in some way. :)

message 141: by Noy (new)

Noy Bella (noybella) | 19 comments I am the with Karen I just used whatever ate hand, but lately I have been folding the corner of the book, which I really need to stop.

message 143: by Lawrence (new)

Lawrence | 108 comments I also collect book markers from the library. My coworkers made a homemade for my birthday with their Happy Birthday signatures on it and had it laminated. So it's my main book marker when I'm two or more books.

That is such an awesome idea. I never thought about doing that. I don't use my nook that much, but when I do, I tend to use the highlight feature there or bookmark. Why not on a paper book. Maybe I will start that in the future. I like good old fashioned paper books much better.

I'm with you. I hate ruining my book pages. My favorite is still just the regular book marks, but I do the same when I don't have one. Receipts or napkins etc.

message 148: by Stacey (new)

Stacey Hunt (staceytianna) | 4 comments I just use whatever's the most handy as my bookmark. Sometimes I'll use an old napkin, other times a slip of paper, and sometimes I'll simply fold the corner of the page. When it's not lost, I use my FAVOURITE bookmark, which is of my favourite video game:
KINGDOM HEARTS
:)

message 149: by ASP (new)

ASP | 61 comments Same as most of you, if it is not already used in another book, I love to use those magnetic bookmarks, othewise, post-it notes, or a postcard. Sometimes I like playing tricks to myself and don't use anything, so I will have to try and find where I stopped. But I only do this with new paperback as they usually open "automatically" where they were opened (more or less) where you left them ;))

message 150: by Laura (last edited Apr 06, 2013 03:43PM) (new)

Laura | 55 comments I've tried to embrace the magnetic bookmarks, but they actually get on my nerves. So much fiddling about when trying to move them! I'm an old-fashioned kind of bookmark kind of girl. :)
