Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments For real! I have been thinking that for a long time. I just don't have the minutes, or the seconds, to invest the time in buddy reads. :( Or, I guess I should add, the money. Lol.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Finally, ♕Queen of Something♕! LOL! Thanks, ladies. Luckily Sans and I often have the book already, she is gracious enough to wait until I can get it from the library (as is the case for this one), or she sends me her extra copy.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Sans, I thought I'd stop and post questions for the first half of the novella. Also, I’m going to break these down into chapters, just so we can answer the questions chronologically to our readings.

CHAPTER 1

1. Janvier. Are you pronouncing his name with an H sound?

2. Janvier might be a perennial pain in her ass, but he was built like the sexiest dream she’d ever had—lean and long, his muscles that of a runner or a swimmer, all sleek lines and contained power. Ummm, yum, sounds like our kind of body build. How do you like his Cajun charisma?

3. Ashwini can’t keep her hands off Janvier, can she? And “unlike every other person” she knows, there is no “pulse memory”. I bet that makes him even more appealing tactilely (and every other way), right?

CHAPTER 2

4. Who is the “boy-now-man” who refuses to see her as she is currently?

5. “Now I find myself envious of mold—see what you do to me.” Okay, how can this statement possible be sexy to me? But it is. I’m hopeless. Are you enjoying the bantering back and forth between these two? What do you think of the pet name, “Ashblade”?

6. Whoa! Nazarach is one scary dude. Think he is the Big Fuc#er in this one? Is he hitting on Ashwini? And what kind of “terror-choked hell” has been seeking her since childhood? Why is she picking up on this when it usually requires that she touch the being?

CHAPTER 3

7. Do you believe Nazarach is interested in this “Atlanta situation” only because Antoine is overreaching himself?

8. Who the hell is Dr. Tai? Her brother? The boy from the photo?

9. Nazarach sounds a bit manipulative, you think? Not providing Janvier blood in his room so Ashwini would be alone. Were you surprised Nazarach showed up “uninvited” when she stepped out of the shower?

10. She bloodied an angle!? Comments.

CHAPTER 4

11. Egan’s tongue has regrown? Why the tongue, what was he doing with it?

12. Don’t destroy a treasure for a moment’s fleeting pleasure.” What exactly does Janvier think (know?) Nazarach was going to do?

13. Seems both Janvier and Ash are feeling protective toward one another. Comments.

14. Were you surprised Ash shook Perida’s hand, or did you anticipate that move? Did she pick up how Perido felt about Simone when she touched her, and that cued her in on which direction to take on her dialogue?

15. Janvier and Ash are spending the night together, pretending to be lovers? Comments.

16. First impressions: Is Monique in on this kidnapping? Or is she flirting with Callen to avoid death? Or what?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments QUESTIONS FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE STORY

CHAPTER 5

17. Okay, still wasn’t sure which way that opening dialogue was going to reveal. You?

18. “Sorry, sweetheart, I’m not playing second fiddle to anyone—least of all a vicious brat who’d sell out her own family.” Monique is surprised and then kissed. What does this tell you about Callen and Monique? It certainly complicates the recue!

19. “You’re like me.” Janvier and Ash have similar background stories, with trust issues. !? Just who was that vamp who almost ripped her throat out? Is that who she means when she is walking in the garden with Janvier? Are you surprised she told him what she did?

21. Do you think that is all Nazarach wants, to see who comes out on top?

22. Are you impressed with Janvier and Ash’s plan to distract Perida and “rescue” Monique? Do you think they work well together?

21. Monique doesn’t want to go. No surprise there. Whatever will Ashwini do?

CHAPTER 6

23. It was her brother! Whoa!

24. Did Ashwini “cheat” by mentioning Monique’s Contract?

25. She kissed him! Timing is everything. Did this work for you?

26. Monique sounds like a vain, conceited little tramp that is TSTL. What did she think was going to happen? Your two cents worth?

27. Did you like estate escape? Enough action for you?

28. Do you think the favor of wiping the blood off Janvier is going to be the one Ash counts as the one he bargained for at in the beginning of this mission?

29. For even a second, did you fall for Monique’s plea?

30. NOT and invitation? Uh oh!

CHAPTER 7

31. “But I want no blood from you—not until we’re both sweaty and naked and you’re screaming my name.” Whoa! That was a nicer way to start the chapter than I expected. What did you think of Ash’s conditions for giving Janvier blood?

32. Comments on Frédéric and Monique’s relationship? Think he is the right guy to go to for a grenade launcher?

33. Okay, I’m a little confused. What exactly did Simone due to deserve being a “guest” to Nazarach for the next decade?

34. Do you think Frédéric is going to do something, if not in this story, in the next?

35. Do you think Callen’s punishment was just compared to the Antoine, Simone, and the Beaumonts’?

CHAPTER EIGHT

36. Christ on a cracker, I didn’t think they were going to get out of that banquet without some bloodshed. You?

37. The patience of him made her toes curl and the knowledge that he’d kiss her as exquisitely in the other, softer, darker places. Too bad I used my “Christ on a cracker” expression on question #36! Wow! And she took the train away from him. A stronger woman than me.

38. How did you like this story? What did you rate it?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lisa Kay's Answers to Her Own Questions for the First Half

CHAPTER 1

1. Janvier. Are you pronouncing his name with an H sound?
I am.

I’m love Cajun men. Not that I’ve ever met any; but, Hollywood does a good job of convincing me they are delish. Someone on GR recently crushed that image, but I won’t go there, LOL! Loved that I had to look up a word: sybarite.

3. Ashwini can’t keep her hands off Janvier, can she? And “unlike every other person” she knows, there is not “pulse memory”. I bet that makes him even more appealing tactilely (and every other way), right?
I would image this would be a BIG draw for her. Not that he doesn’t have other “attributes” to entice her.

CHAPTER 2

4. Who is the “boy-now-man” who refuses to see her as she is currently?
I’m thinking her brother. She is too young to have a grown son.

5. “Now I find myself envious of mold—see what you do to me.” Okay, how can this statement possible be sexy to me? But it is. I’m hopeless. Are you enjoying the bantering back and forth between these two? What do you think of the pet name, “Ashblade”?
What can I say? I’m a sick person. I really first the dialogue great. I dislike bickering couples; love bantering couples with wit. I want to know why he calls her “Ashblade” and “my Blade”. Is there a story there?

6. Whoa! Nazarach is one scary dude. Think he is the Big Fuc#er in this one? Is he hitting on Ashwini? And what kind of “terror-choked hell” has been seeking her since childhood? Why is she picking up on this when it usually requires that she touch the being?
I’m betting he’s the Big Fuc#er, not Callen. But, what do I know.

CHAPTER 3

7. Do you believe Nazarach is interested in this “Atlanta situation” only because Antoine is overreaching himself?
I think he is holding something back. I just can’t imagine what! Why doesn't he want his name used to settle this?

8. Who the hell is Dr. Tai? Her brother? The boy from the photo?
I’m about 80% sure he’s someone despicable who was in on drugging her and keeping her addicted. I’m thinking her brother, maybe?

9. Nazarach sounds a bit manipulative, you think? Not providing Janvier blood in his room so Ashwini would be alone. Were you surprised Nazarach showed up “uninvited” when she stepped out of the shower?
Definitely! Vain, too. I knew he’d show up, figured he would NOT be a gentleman.

10. She bloodied an angle!? Comments.
If so, this lady has some serious chops.

CHAPTER 4

11. Egan’s tongue has regrown? Why the tongue, what was he doing with it?
LOL! I can only image! Just kidding, but only about 90%. There is a 10% possibility he used it on Ash inappropriately. However, I say a surer bet is he lied about whatever he did.

12. Don’t destroy a treasure for a moment’s fleeting pleasure.” What exactly does Janvier think (know?) Nazarach was going to do?
I'm stumped. He's a lecher, though.

13. Seems both Janvier and Ash are feeling protective toward one another. Comments.
Yes. Still, there is a nice little gradual reveal of this feeling. Nicely written. Do you know what a sorcière is? Could you tell from the context of the discussion, or did it bug you?

14. Were you surprised Ash shook Perida’s hand, or did you anticipate that move? Did she pick up how Perido felt about Simone when she touched her, and that cued her in on which direction to take on her dialogue?
For about a split second I was surprised she shook her hand. Then, I figured she was out for info. I believe she picked up how Perido felt about Simone b/f she spoke.

15. Janvier and Ash are spending the night together, pretending to be lovers? Comments.
This could get interesting!

16. First impressions: Is Monique in on this kidnapping? Or is she flirting with Callen to avoid death? Or what?
Man-oh-man! Interesting! I really don’t know the answer to this. Flirting? That’s a development I wasn’t expecting, though it’s been used in stories down the ages. I’ll have to turn the page to find out.

message 9: by Sans (last edited Aug 17, 2011 08:44PM) (new)

Sans Sans answers:

CHAPTER 1

1. Janvier. Are you pronouncing his name with an H sound?

I was pronouncing it "Jean-veer". More French than Spanish, right? *is confused!*

YESMOARPLEESE *Sans is trying to scoop her brains back into her head*

3. Ashwini can’t keep her hands off Janvier, can she? And “unlike every other person” she knows, there is not “pulse memory”. I bet that makes him even more appealing tactilely (and every other way), right?
Mind meld! Similar to Sookie in the Southern Vampire/True Blood series. Her telepathy/psychic hearing was negated by vamps.

CHAPTER 2

4. Who is the “boy-now-man” who refuses to see her as she is currently?

Wait, what? *goes back to re-read* Oh! I think it's her brother.

5. “Now I find myself envious of mold—see what you do to me.” Okay, how can this statement possible be sexy to me? But it is. I’m hopeless. Are you enjoying the bantering back and forth between these two? What do you think of the pet name, “Ashblade”?
So glad I wasn't the only one who got a little turned on by that mold comment. XD I love the bantering! Great nickname too.

6. Whoa! Nazarach is one scary dude. Think he is the Big Fuc#er in this one? Is he hitting on Ashwini? And what kind of “terror-choked hell” has been seeking her since childhood? Why is she picking up on this when it usually requires that she touch the being?
I'm confused on the roles of angels in this book. @_@ He's definitely the Big F*cker here though. It sounds like she's got that psychic ability to see an object or person's past (can't remember what it's called and I'm too lazy to Google it right now), but not the good stuff. Sounds like she connects only to the dark things. The darker and more terrifying, the louder it is and she doesn't even have to touch? And Big F*cker is the darkest evil of them all and has been soaking in it for 700 years.

CHAPTER 3

7. Do you believe Nazarach is interested in this “Atlanta situation” only because Antoine is overreaching himself?

I wonder. I think it's a diverting little chess game to him. And The girl, Monique, defied him. Even thought he doesn't care about his objects, he's not going to lose face or the appearance of power by letting them go.

8. Who the hell is Dr. Tai? Her brother? The boy from the photo?
Yes, yes, and yeah, I think so.

9. Nazarach sounds a bit manipulative, you think? Not providing Janvier blood in his room so Ashwini would be alone. Were you surprised Nazarach showed up “uninvited” when she stepped out of the shower?
Oh yeah. I really want to know what the heck he wants with her.

10. She bloodied an angle!? Comments.
Seriously! Girl has some balls, that's for sure.

CHAPTER 4

11. Egan’s tongue has regrown? Why the tongue, what was he doing with it?

Had it cut it out for insolence? And to show him that he can't have everything he wants unless he's a lot more powerful than he was?

12. "Don’t destroy a treasure for a moment’s fleeting pleasure.” What exactly does Janvier think (know?) Nazarach was going to do?
I think it had less to do with Nazarach and more to do with Ashwini's reaction to him.

13. Seems both Janvier and Ash are feeling protective toward one another. Comments.
Awwww, they wuv each other! Well, they're panting after each other at least. I think they're going to keep coming back in the series. At least I hope so!

14. Were you surprised Ash shook Perida’s hand, or did you anticipate that move? Did she pick up how Perido felt about Simone when she touched her, and that cued her in on which direction to take on her dialogue?
I don't think the touch had anything to do with it, I think she already had an idea about how much Cal and his group hated her and decided to test out the waters. Worked out well!

15. Janvier and Ash are spending the night together, pretending to be lovers? Comments.
You know they were both hoping it could have led to more!

16. First impressions: Is Monique in on this kidnapping? Or is she flirting with Callen to avoid death? Or what?
I don't think it was her idea, but she's totally down with it if it'll get her what she wants.

CHAPTER 5

17. Okay, still wasn’t sure which way that opening dialogue was going to reveal. You?

Ditto.

18. “Sorry, sweetheart, I’m not playing second fiddle to anyone—least of all a vicious brat who’d sell out her own family.” Monique is surprised and then kissed. What does this tell you about Callen and Monique? It certainly complicates the rescue!
She's an opportunist so I'm not surprised at how manipulative she is!

19. “You’re like me.” Janvier and Ash have similar background stories, with trust issues. !? Just who was that vamp who almost ripped her throat out? Is that who she means when she is walking in the garden with Janvier? Are you surprised she told him what she did?
I think that vamp was either her lover or her means of suicide. Weird. I wasn't surprised, this felt like a great set up for a longer book focused on these two.

21. Do you think that is all Nazarach wants, to see who comes out on top?
I think he wants to see how far they'll all go so he gets to punish them all.

22. Are you impressed with Janvier and Ash’s plan to distract Perida and “rescue” Monique? Do you think they work well together?
I wasn't too impressed with the "set fire to the draperies" plan, but they definitely work well together!

21. Monique doesn’t want to go. No surprise there. Whatever will Ashwini do?
*smirk* Monique is not going to get in the way of Ash's job.

CHAPTER 6

23. It was her brother! Whoa!

Go us!

24. Did Ashwini “cheat” by mentioning Monique’s Contract?
Not at all. She was told she couldn't mention the angel to the other vamps, but Monique had to know she'd be caught.

25. She kissed him! Timing is everything. Did this work for you?
It totally did.

26. Monique sounds like a vain, conceited little tramp that is TSTL. What did she think was going to happen? Your two cents worth?
Right?? I really hate women/characters like that.

27. Did you like estate escape? Enough action for you?
It was really good, especially for such a short story. I could easily picture it all in my head.

28. Do you think the favor of wiping the blood off Janvier is going to be the one Ash counts as the one he bargained for at in the beginning of this mission?
No, she's got more honor and courage than that.

29. For even a second, did you fall for Monique’s plea?
Oh hells to the no. That b*tch is just trying to twist everyone around her pretty finger.

30. NOT an invitation? Uh oh!
>_<

CHAPTER 7

31.
“But I want no blood from you—not until we’re both sweaty and naked and you’re screaming my name.” Whoa! That was a nicer way to start the chapter than I expected. What did you think of Ash’s conditions for giving Janvier blood?
LOL! I posted a status update with that quote. I totally eat that kind of dialogue up. She's smart.

32. Comments on Frédéric and Monique’s relationship? Think he is the right guy to go to for a grenade launcher?
Squicky. For some reason I can read twincest in fanfic and not get squicked, but when siblings of different genders get their nasty on? Ick. I think he just might be. And I think Ash is looking to shoot down some angels with that grenade launcher.

33. Okay, I’m a little confused. What exactly did Simone do to deserve being a “guest” to Nazarach for the next decade?
She caused the situation between Antoine and Callen, so she gets to be punished for causing Nazarach trouble.

34. Do you think Frédéric is going to do something, if not in this story, in the next?
I wonder. I'm sure he's going to be collateral damage in either case!

35. Do you think Callen’s punishment was just compared to the Antoine, Simone, and the Beaumonts’?
I think so. He's back under Nazarach's thumb for 100 years, not nominated to work for him like he wanted.

CHAPTER EIGHT

36. Christ on a cracker, I didn’t think they were going to get out of that banquet without some bloodshed. You?

I was surprised at how...civil it all went down.

37. The patience of him made her toes curl and the knowledge that he’d kiss her as exquisitely in the other, softer, darker places. Too bad I used my “Christ on a cracker” expression on question #36! Wow! And she took the train away from him. A stronger woman than me.
No joke! I would have asked if it was sweaty, naked, screaming time yet.

38. How did you like this story? What did you rate it?
I really liked it! Gave it a 4.

Sans @Lisa Kay,
#1 - Where is a pronunciation guide when you need one?
#2 - I'm curious about that nearly killed your love of the Cajun goodness. My biggest fiction-crush during high school was Remy (Gambit) from X-Men. Especially when the Andy Kubert was doing the artwork. Holy craparoni.

#4 - Mind meld again.
#5 - TOTAL mind meld on bickering vs. bantering. Gimme witty dialogue any day over "I hate you, get away from me, go to hell, let's have sex."
#7 - To screw with people?
#8 - Yeah, it was her brother.
#10 - You put it much nicer than I did. ^o^
#11 - Good point!
#13 - It kinda sounds like "sorcerer". Google translate says "witch".

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments QUESTIONS FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE STORY

CHAPTER 5

17. Okay, still wasn’t sure which way that opening dialogue was going to reveal. You?
That was pretty good. I was still trying to figure out to what degree Callen and Monique were in cahoots even as Ash crawled away.

18. “Sorry, sweetheart, I’m not playing second fiddle to anyone—least of all a vicious brat who’d sell out her own family.” Monique is surprised and then kissed. What does this tell you about Callen and Monique? It certainly complicates the recue!
He has delusions of grandeur. I don’t know about the kind of twisted relationship these two have, but it obviously floating their boat.

19. “You’re like me.” Janvier and Ash have similar background stories, with trust issues. !? Just who was that vamp who almost ripped her throat out? Is that who she means when she is walking in the garden with Janvier? Are you surprised she told him what she did?
I don’t know if her brother is the vamp in question or not. Questions, questions. Otherwise, maybe the vamp is an almost lover?

21. Do you think that is all Nazarach wants, to see who comes out on top?
This guy is something else. I think he is one sadistic Big Fuc#er. I think more is going on here, but we’ll have to wait for the next story to see if I’m right. We might see another burning of Alanta.

22. Are you impressed with Janvier and Ash’s plan to distract Perida and “rescue” Monique? Do you think they work well together?
I loved them together. Some romantic suspense novels have the H/h do things separately, and I can see the reason for the logistics sometimes. But as a reader, I want to see them working together, side by side, in the thick of it.

21. Monique doesn’t want to go. No surprise there. Whatever will Ash will do?
Hey. This dude-ette is serious; Monique is going to go with her, even if she has to knock her unconscious.

CHAPTER 6

23. It was her brother! Whoa!
Devastating what family does to one another. Gosh, I don’t even know if the next story is about Janvier and Ash or not, LOL! We may have a while b/f we find out what this evil dude did to her.

24. Did Ashwini “cheat” by mentioning Monique’s Contract?
I was a little worry, but I think she found one of those loopholes we love.

25. She kissed him! Timing is everything. Did this work for you?
It did. They had that time in the garden. She was happy he remembered her crossbow. She went with her gut.

26. Monique sounds like a vain, conceited little tramp that is TSTL. What did she think was going to happen? Your two cents worth?
This Q for U.

27. Did you like estate escape? Enough action for you?
Yes! Loved it.

28. Do you think the favor of wiping the blood off Janvier is going to be the one Ash counts as the one he bargained for at in the beginning of this mission?
That’s what I was thinking. But it appears I am wrong.

29. For even a second, did you fall for Monique’s plea?
Hmmm. The dude is scary. Maybe not a second, but for a split-second I did.

30. NOT and invitation? Uh oh!
That flipped me out; I wanted her to call Sara. But, I could see why she didn’t call her people and thought it was explained well as to why she didn’t.

CHAPTER 7

31. “But I want no blood from you—not until we’re both sweaty and naked and you’re screaming my name.” Whoa! That was a nicer way to start the chapter than I expected. What did you think of Ash’s conditions for giving Janvier blood?
Ah! She’s caving a bit. LOL!

32. Comments on Frédéric and Monique’s relationship? Think he is the right guy to go to for a grenade launcher?
**groans audibly** I’m getting enough “incest is best” in George R. R. Martin’s Fire and Ice epic. I need a break.

33. Okay, I’m a little confused. What exactly did Simone due to deserve being a “guest” to Nazarach for the next decade?
I get that she was encouraging Antoine to advance his domain. But I’m really not sure how that ties in with the kidnapping of Monique.

34. Do you think Frédéric is going to do something, if not in this story, in the next?
This Littler Fuc#er is crazy. So, yes. And what is he going to do when he finds out about Callen and Monique?

35. Do you think Callen’s punishment was just compared to the Antoine, Simone, and the Beaumonts’?
I didn’t. However, I like that the last chapter mentions she is guilty of more things; I guess that is be discovered. It is a short story, after all.

CHAPTER EIGHT

36. Christ on a cracker, I didn’t think they were going to get out of that banquet without some bloodshed. You?
What a sigh of relief I felt!

37. The patience of him made her toes curl and the knowledge that he’d kiss her as exquisitely in the other, softer, darker places. Too bad I used my “Christ on a cracker” expression on question #36! Wow! And she took the train away from him. A stronger woman than me.
What an image. **sigh**

38. How did you like this story? What did you rate it?
I liked it a lot. As a new-to-me-author, I found her “voice” fairly easily; she was amazing. I will definitely read more of her writing. Glad we’re starting the next book. For a short story, she told a lot. ★★★★½ from me.

#19 - Partial mind meld! Interesting idea about her brother being a vamp too!
#20 - I like Atlanta. *sniff* Hey, have you read the Kate Daniels books? Talk about Atlanta getting shafted!
#21 & 22 - Mind meld!
#23 - *checks book 1* Nope, it's Elena, the friend Ash mentioned agreeing with on no-sleeping-with-the-vamps policy.
#24 - Let's toast the loopholes! *pours a round of shots*
#25 - It sounds like they both were able to learn a lot more about each other on this little mission.
#29 - I think she's honestly afraid of Nazarach, but she knew what she was getting into. No sympathy from my corner.
#32 - LMAO!!
#33 - It was also a way of punishing Antoine I think? And because he CAN. He just wants to f*ck with as many of these people as he can. O_o
#34 - Maybe they have an "open" incest relationship? They can have toys on the side but keep coming back to each other?
#38 - We need to read her Psy-Changling series. *nodnods* I LOVED the first book, Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling, #1) by Nalini Singh .

#2 I'm curious about that nearly killed your love of the Cajun goodness. My biggest fiction-crush during high school was Remy (Gambit) from X-Men.
I asked if she spoke Creole. She just said that they really are not all that appealing in that area; a lot are crude, rough, violent, mean and uneducated. Maybe she is a little prejudice. IDK. X-men was after me, but I do like Huge Jackman. :)

I thought of that, as an excuse, but the words in the story is clearly "century" and "ten" - unless my brain was getting short-circuited.
