Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) | 754 comments I got so stressed out when I started the Summer Challenge because I spent so much time worrying about the review I was going to do after I read the tasks books, that I didn't finish the Summer Challenge. So for this Fall Challenge I have sorted my book shelves (all 15) and on my NOOK (another 10) after I skimmed the Fall tasks to see what I have to meet the tasks. I then cleaned 2 shelves and a plastic storage bend (that my kitty cats use to lay on, sunning themselves) and placed my hard/paperbacks. I created a Fall Shelf on my NOOK for those books I've downloaded. I kept 15 books unshelved that I downloaded in the past 10 days since a task is calling for 1 of those. Any book reviews I do will be posted on my profile page or on Facebook.
My Goal this time is 100,000 pages and 400 points.

Cassie | 133 comments Hey, everybody. I'm new to the SRC, and I haven't found anything about this so far in the numerous rule threads, so I thought I'd ask in this one. What is the general feeling about using short story collections (by a single author) to fulfill tasks? Is this a task specific question? Mostly I've come across people saying that you have to read a single work of at least 100 pages, but what if it's a short story collection by one author and it's over 100 pages? Technically it could be looked at as a collection of short works, but I tend to look at these collections (as long as they're by a single author) as a single work. I was just wondering what the general thought was in the group. Thanks!

Short story collections are fine, as long as you read the entire book and it's over 100 pages. Doesn't matter whether it's stories by one author or by many - it's still a book.

In general, any title- broadly interpreted as a separate isbn- that fulfills the task requirement may be used. A book like The Best Short Stories of O. Henry is treated as any other book- the title needs to be read in its entirety; you couldn't stop at 100 pages. If a book fits a task requiring a word, cover image/color, length, etc. it doesn't matter the form- play, poetry, anthology, etc.

good luck! that's a great goal.

Joanna (walker) | 433 comments For tasks requiring a specific cover, if the copy I get is from my library and they've replaced the cover with those old-school hard-back library bindings, do I use the color of the binding or the cover that matches the ISBN?

I checked out Jealousy from the library and instead of coming with the cover that matches the publication info of the edition ( Jealousy (Evergreen E-193) by Alain Robbe-Grillet ), it has a plain blue hardback cover on it.

Good planning Anne! I found that going for a goal point total seems to work better for me than anything else. That way I can look at what I have and go with those books first.

Please use the cover that you see- if your cover differs from the GR info, please explain when you post.

It would be a good idea to check in the help thread for a specific task. Are you planning on reading the paperback or an electronic format? Sometimes the color is easier to discern if you have a physical book to check.

message 68: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8964 comments if you look at the readerboard, they say through post whatever in the completed task...the thread itself won't show any updates because that only tracks original msgs to the thread, not msg updates

Ad.Lewis wrote: "Just being a little curious... How often is the Readerboard update? Mine is showing the last update being Sept. 5. Is this correct??"

Typically, we try to update the readerboard every 50 posts - that's the end of a page of posts, so it's a good stopping point for each update. However, this is a goal and you should keep in mind that this may not always happen. While I'd love to spend my time reading and playing with GR, my real job has to come first!

The date you see on the right is the date that the post was originally posted. That won't change - we just keep editing that post, rather than adding new posts when we update the numbers.

If you're interested in the date when the readerboard was updated, look at the gray bar at the top of the post. That shows you when it was last edited.

There are no limitations or conditions regarding comic-type books. I would recommend that use your judgement as to whether they are appropriate for SRC tasks

JC (jmnc) | 638 comments Is The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread a children's book? I see it shelved as both "children" and "young adult" and would like to use it for a 25 pt. task.

message 73: by Almeta (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) I am new to the challenge, so have spied on other people's point tracking system to get an idea on how to report my completed tasks.

I notice that some people count pages read. Is that a bonus chalenge for which I can not find a thread, or is it just the person's personal challenge?

message 74: by Dee (last edited Oct 07, 2011 04:22AM) (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8964 comments that is just their own personal challenge. the only time it matters is if you are claiming a big book ticket (500+ pages)

maybe you should post this on the actually thread you are trying to use it for. not everyone checks here.

I did post in the help thread and it was approved for the title reqirements of the task, but I wondered if it would be rejected by the mods after I posted points because it's shelved as "children's" and it's a 25 pt. task. I'll go ahead with it and if it's rejected it's still early enough in the challenge to shuffle if necessary.

I would say that if the task creator ok'ed it, it should be ok. This is my first challenge, so I'm not sure, but I would do what you planned. Sorry I wasn't more help.

Almeta (menfrommarrs) Chris wrote: "Should Wonderstruck count as a "big book"? It's physically more than 600 pages, but more than 2/3 of the book is illustrations. Just wondering."

I have the same question. Although in hardback form, it is kinda like a graphic novel. Of the over 600 pages, 420 are black and white drawings. The pictures are designed to tell a story without words, not to "illustrate" the text story. They are two separate stories running parralell to one another, separated by decades and converging at the conclusion.

message 84: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8964 comments leslie - you are best to ask that in the specific task help thread

Chris wrote: "Should Wonderstruck count as a "big book"? It's physically more than 600 pages, but more than 2/3 of the book is illustrations. Just wondering."

Big Book tickets reward participants who read longer books with an opportunity to create a task. The idea here is that someone has done more than is required for the actual task, and to provide some incentive for people to read longer and more time consuming books.

If you feel that a book that meets the Big Book page limits has taken extra time and effort to read, then that book is worthy of that opportunity and you may elect to claim a ticket. Claiming Big Book tickets is optional.

mstan | 868 comments I want to read the free kindle version of King Richard III (no pages specified) and the mass market paperback version is 432 pages, but includes explanatory notes, etc., so I don't feel that it'd be 'right' for me to cite the page count as such. I just need to make sure the play fulfils the >100 page requirement (I'm just going to use it for 15.10 - Roaming Wild). Can I check this please?
