Jim (jimmaclachlan) Automatic Reload by Ferrett Steinmetz was interesting. It wasn't quite worth 4 stars, but closer than I would have expected from the blurb. I reviewed it here:

I'm currently reading The Drifter. I think fans of Jack Reacher will enjoy this book. I'm digging it.

L.G. (upl8) | 73 comments I'm currently reading The Fallen Angel (Gabriel Allon, #12) by Daniel Silva. This is a re-read for me, since I read this book when it was originally published. At that time, I hadn't read any of the previous books in the series. So, now I am reading the series in order. Many of the characters show up in several of the books, so I have a greater appreciation for this book now.

Jeff Bailey The Dog on the Acropolis I am currently reading A Dog On The Acropolis by Mark Tedesco. I was telling my wife of the unusual premise of the story, a dog appoints himself the 'greeter', and 'host' for the visitors to the Acropolis. Now, my wife loves a good backstory and asked me if I knew what the backstory was to A Dog On The Acropolis? I didn't know of one so I messaged Mark on GoodReads. Seems the last time he visited the Acropolis, a stray dog met him at the base of the access stairway, greeted him like an old friend, and escorted him to the top. Then the dog just left? Odd. The next evening, Mark returned for his last visit to the Acropolis and the stray appeared once again and escorted him to the top. Only a true renaissance writer like Mark could write such a beautiful story from so innocent an event. A Dog On The Acropolis is just a story of a dog(s), right? Animal Farm was just the story of some pigs. Great backstory, great book.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just finished one of the latest of L.E. Modesitt Jr.'s most recent books, Quantum Shadows. It was an interesting SF story steeped in mythology & religion that was a little too much like the US political situation to be anything but depressing. Good story, though. I like that sort of blend. Still, I only gave it a 3 star review here:

Yes, I did enjoy it! The show is true to the book. I planned on watching just the first episode and wanted to finish the book first. HAHAH, I binged all 8 episodes this weekend. 😅

Thank you for a laugh to start my day. The books are about as authentic as a comic book. It will probably good for TV where mindless action is entertaining, same as the movies.

I happen to enjoy mindless action movies and books, thanks Jim!! Three days after its premiere, it's confirmed for season 2...so glad many others do too. 🤪🎉🎊

message 5134: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I've watched some of the first one & the guy certainly fits the image I had of Reacher better than Tom Cruise did. So far, so good.

I can only suspend my sense of disbelief so far in books & Child tears it apart. IIRC, Reacher wore the same clothes & never took a shower for at least 3 days in hot, southern weather yet the girls still found him attractive. The way he writes about guns is really messed up, though. It's obvious he's never actually used one. Quite a difference from someone like Donald Hamilton who hunted with them.

LOL, Yes. I recall a Reacher book where he'd been digging swimming pools by hand for a couple of weeks, took a bus north without a shower or change of clothes, showed up at a wedding and the "female protagonist" was immediately smitten with him. Strange girl.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm now on the second Reacher & enjoying it. I finally figured out where I knew Detective Finley from. (I'm terrible at that, so it's a win even if I am slow.) He played basically the same part (Det. Clive Babineaux (sp?) in iZombie. He's great at it.

That's one of my favorites by him. The second wasn't quite as good & the third one was very repetitious, pretty much filled in the back story that were already told in the first two.

This is the first book of Perry's I've read. I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Do you recommend any of his other books/series?

message 5143: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The first book of his that I read was Metzger's Dog & I might like it the best. He's written quite a few standalones & several novels have sequels. I didn't care as much for Jane Whitfield, Perry's longest & perhaps most popular series, but I still read them all & enjoyed them well enough.

You can check out my bookshelf of them here:
