Eileen Someday I'll finish the entire series, Lady D. I certainly will never get enough of Elvis or Pike. lol

I also took advantage of Audible's $4.95 sale. I've been wanting to read Outlander for ages and figured I can't wait any longer. Hoping to start this series soon, I got Dresden Files #2.

I am currently reading The Willing second in the series and turning out to be just as entertaining as the first book.

C.S. Splitter | 234 comments You are going to LOVE the Dresden Files. I do at least lol. Th stories get a bit repetitive, but Butcher tells great stories so you don't really notice it. Good overall story arc too.

I picked up Dresden Files # 2 audiobook too. Since I finished Storm Front. I really liked storm front. I can't wait to get into Dresden Files again.

Eileen Someday I'll track my A/A books I read on here, if I ever figure out how.

I just started listening to The Hidden Oasis by Paul Sussman on Audiobook. It's okay so far. I just started it. It has some foul language and a couple of graphic scenes, but those were along the lines of what you might find in a Matthew Riely Book, violence, descriptive damage that sort of thing.

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) | 5326 comments Mod
Okay, for an update, The Hidden Oasisis more adventure/treasure hunting than action right now. I guess that makes it a T/A book (yes, that's even more fun for an anogram than A/A) Thriller/Adventure.

It's a good read, slower where I'm at now than I was expecting after the start, but the descriptions of Egypt are wonderful, and I already like the two main characters. Sussman is taking the time to make them whole and human like one might in a more dramatic "Literary" work than standard Action Adventure stuff. There might even be a strong Heroine here, but it's too early to tell. If it keeps this level of quality, it'll get good marks from me. Still too early to totally commit to it though.

Alice (nationofcrumb) | 297 comments Currently I'm reading Whiskey Sour, based on Hugh's loving the series, and The Bishop.

Hugh, I was going to hold off on finishing the Bower series, but then a co-worker killed a snake in the back of the building and my thoughts immediately went to Patrick so I had to continue.

It's a strange correlation, but there you have it.

Eileen Just finished "The Willing", which was great! I'm halfway done with "Outlander" and enjoying alot. I've been on a lucky streak lately with good books.

I'm enjoying "The Hidden Oaiss" a lot, it's good, but it's like a Ken Folliot Novel slow starter. It's heating up now though. I like the slow time when they use it to build characters and intrigue. It's a good treasure hunt.

Hugh, I've been thinking about The Hidden Oasis and I'd noted that some of the reviews said it was fast paced and others talked about it being slow...it was a reason I'd held off. (I noted the most common rating seemed to be a 3, odd). So you're saying it has periods of high action with periods of slower plot exposition?

message 514: by The Pirate Ghost, Long John Silvers Wanna-be (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) | 5326 comments Mod
My experience is that it's more like what the Sub Navy would call Sprint and Drift. The action is fast paced and it brackets some slower parts where the author is building his back story, charcter development an stuff, the intrigue etc. I like the light touch this guy has with the tender moments which is really a countrast to the Iron glove when he's writing the bad guys. I like it, but again, it's sort of paced like Eye of the Needle by Ken Follett.

There is some vulgar language and some rough scenes, but by and large, take out the cussing and it's nothing you haven't seen or heard in other books. Violence and really bad bad guys and an evil villain.

I am always amused by the way English writers write for American Characters. (Which is not to say it's bad, just very subtle differences like calling a cellphone a "mobile" and stuff.)

It's worth a try if your okay with the drifting spots..

(Sprint and Drift.. where the sub runs at high speed (rendering it generally blind) then drifts listening with passive sonar for any subs or ships around, then sprints ahead again etc. very effective for subs. )

I also expect that I'm getting to the part where it shifts from character and plot development to more action oriented, about a third of the way through (long book too).

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 2933 comments Mod
I'll probably try it...which again shows I have no will power. I keep meaning to spend more time on the books waiting on my shelves. LOL

I got interested in a book that is Ebook only (happens to be Kindle) and I was "unloading" about it. Now my daughter is thinking a Kindle might be a good gift...just what I need, 100,000 more unread books.

And, think of it like the library, just because all of the books are free, that doesn't mean you have to check them all out.

Think of it like the borg... "you will be assimalated, resistence is futile."

e-readers are the future of books. Less cost, more profit, easy access for the consumers. If your able to go big, the Dx is wonderful and offers the largest reading area. but all of the Kindles, even the K3s etc. can play audio books too, or text to speech (which is about like having your GPS Navigator (Tom-Tom, Garmin) read a story to you.

Yes.

I now have 10 or more on reserve and am working through the 'available now' list in mystery, science fiction and fantasy ... plus additional 'available now' searches by author's name as well.

I don't think I am going to need to physically go to the library and get actual books anytime soon!

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 2933 comments Mod
Yes, we're building a world where paper books will disappear and one magnetic pulse will be able to wipe out all the accumulated knowledge of humanity...

Great.

See, there is a use for it. (and paper books didn't save the Library of Alexandria did it? EMP, one match or errant cigarette butt gets the same results.) I figure that Libraries may become responsible for pritning and maintaining book - hard copies, so one bomb or solar flare doesn't erase history.

Then again, if you read 1984, you know that history belongs to the people in charge, wirtten histories have less to do with fact than point of view.

Not that I completely agree with George Orwell either, but he does have a point.

Ya but the idea that fire will get every paper book is a bit more far fetched than sun spot activity knocking out the power grid and blanking saved electronic data. Of course if we're talking nucs then it may be a tossup.

message 533: by The Pirate Ghost, Long John Silvers Wanna-be (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) | 5326 comments Mod
Yes, but if you have to leave a burning building, it's a lot easier for me to carry my kindle than carry the 205 books on it if they were hard copy. also easier to put it in the boat if a flood comes.

message 534: by The Pirate Ghost, Long John Silvers Wanna-be (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) | 5326 comments Mod
and nukes aren't going to be particulalry friendly to paper either. a fire's a fire, it doesn't matter how it starts.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 2933 comments Mod
But after the conflagration it will be easier for any survivors (assuming there are such) to find the remains of libraries or book stores (not to mention private libraries, high schools, colleges, etc.) than a kindle, a supply of batteries, working computer terminals, an IT guy...and an Amazon rep.

Actually, I really believe that there are so many things that could be problems for books or for kindles and so many advantages of one over the other, and vice versa, that it's only a semantic argument. without specific information about what's coming in the future and what we have to defend against, it would be impossible to say one or the other is better against a coming colamity or, if you prefer, The coming calamity.

Sharon, I started in the middle and sort of ping-ponged my way through the series. I ended up loving them, but I want to go back and read them next year in propper order. I liked "The Devil Colony" but not as much as I liked "The Last Oracle." But it's good.

Amazonia and Subteranean are both really good and not part of "SIGMA FORCE"

I finishedThe Hidden Oasis (audiobook). It turned out to be pretty good. It's one of those that had a good Narrator, but I still think it would have been more fun to read the book on kindle (or paper). Gordon did a wonderful job narrating, but... I just get that feeling. Oh, yea...Fool Moon Whoo! talk about Bad Doggies everywhere! ... Praise the Lord and pass the Wolfbane!

Another good Dresden story for me.
