So far Lost Girls is a good read. Mayer has kind of achieved a different wrapper by setting a crime story in the dark world of international Special Operatoins and he's created an interesting organization to house his characters in.
It's sort of a mix of high powered Secial Forces Ops and a fairly decent crime drama.
The Crime Drama is similar to the last Steven James "Patric Bower's Files" novel (Queen)and it involves some looks inside some dark scary people (so if you don't like getting into the bad guys heads avoid this one). So far this is a better than average 3 star from me with potential to go 4. I'd like to see more character development and I want to see how this ends since it's sort of set "outside the lines" of most criminal or espionage novels.
I'd also say that I'm not sure if I like the way he's depicted women in this story. It's hit or miss. Sometimes it looks very good (and right, accurate) sometimes it's almost patronizing. Again, how it ends and who does what from the point I'm at on may make a huge difference in how I see that.
Generally, it's a thumbs up right now. Recommendable exciting read, three star (remember, from me, that's a good book, not special, a four is special, and a five is special to me). When all is said and done, it may turn out to be a lot better after I get to the end. Some things that were opened in the front may turn out to be wonderful plot twists at the end.
I'll keep you posted.

I heard Hammered was better than Hexed, but both are not as fun as the first one (Hounded).
And yes, it's enjoyable. It's kind of in no man's land (in a good way)... both Spec-ops and crime story... a little counter terrorism/espionage.
Fun getting better too (which is good). 3 Stars for sure (unless it bombs out in the end), but could be a four star.

I ordered the movie from amazon last night. Like you Pam after reading the book I want to see the movie. I hope it isn't disappointing but it wasn't expensive.

It's also a Crime story. Very interesting take on spec ops... and it involves bad things done to innocent people... well managed for such a book but there... but I don't think it's as scary or dark as in The Pawn (which I liked also) but there are some comparisons (no where near as dark).

Just finished Dominion, which is vampire action horror. It was good and quite dark. Some disturbing aspects.
I am working my way through a reread of the GhostWalkers series, by Christine Feehan, which is paranormal romance, but also easily action/adventure. I finished Predatory Game, and in July, I will start the next book Murder Game.

Pretty classic action/adventure/government intelligence ops but interesting development of the main character, who is female and the action moves well.
I just finished Lost Girls by Bob Mayer. It's a recommendable read. Sound fundamentally, definately A/A (in as much as any crime novel or spec-ops book might be). Skilled writer (Bob Mayer's no hack) interesting plot and twist on things. It had some "Stock" situations and plot institutions, almost cliche' at times but this is Action Adventure meets Patric Bower's, nothing unexpected.
Though the plot is decidedly different it compares well with books like Robert Ludlum's (really Gayle Lind's) The Hades Factor.
It's a spec-ops book, no doubt, but this is spec-ops does crime (or fights domestic terrorism, however you want to look at it.) It compares well plot description to plot description with The Queen by Steven James if you don't look to closely.
The writing's not as deep as Steven James or as polished, but probably "purer" for those genre and catagory purests. It's closer in style and format to the Covert One books (Ludlum and Lynds) but not as tight. Generally it's a 3 star from me which means (meets the standard of entertainment, recommendable, enjoyable and well written.)
I have some heartburn about a couple of things, but those were not bad enough to interfere with my ability to enjoy this read.
I've just picked up the audiobook Monster Hunter Vendetta by Larry Correia and it's not letting me down.
(Oh, I just LUV Holly!...she's my literary girlfriend...if I can have one and not tell my wife!)

I am currently reading Hunter A Thriller by Robert Bidinotto, and so far I am loving it. Bidinotto's knowledge of the inner workings and failings of the justice system as it applies to violent offenders makes for a solid and realistic foundation on which he builds his fictional tale of vigilante justice. From what I have read I can tell you that Hunter is thrilling, entertaining, and definitely thought-provoking.
Cheers,
Steve

Enjoy ... let me know how you liked it!"
I loved the movie Pam almost as much as the book. I will definitely watch it again.

After this I'll start The Cleaner.
About a quarter of the way, jury's still out. Not bad but I've found my mind wandering sometimes.
Reading Monster Hunter Vendetta by Larry Correia and whoever said it, your right, it takes up where the last one left off. Just as fun.
Enjoying it. Good read!

Sandstorm is my first book by Rollins. I enjoyed it although not initially a quick read. Hope you find it rewarding to read, Pam.

This morning I started reading Dead Zero by Stephen Hunter. I'm only a chapter in, but am enjoying the set up. Looking forward to travelling deeper into enemy territory.
Steve

I've vinished "Vendetta" and it's as much fun as the first one of the series.
I have no idea what I'm reading next, but, I'll figure it out as soon as I can and let you know.

What I wouldn't do for 5 hours to dream right now.
We (the company I worked for) used to do work on his mother's properties. That was back about the time he died. Another great singer who died young. Sad.

I felt a Funeral, in my Brain (280)
by Emily Dickinson
I felt a Funeral, in my Brain,
And Mourners to and fro
Kept treading – treading – till it seemed
That Sense was breaking through –
And when they all were seated,
A Service, like a Drum –
Kept beating – beating – till I thought
My Mind was going numb –
And then I heard them lift a Box
And creak across my Soul
With those same Boots of Lead, again,
Then Space – began to toll,
As all the Heavens were a Bell,
And Being, but an Ear,
And I, and Silence, some strange Race
Wrecked, solitary, here –
And then a Plank in Reason, broke,
And I dropped down, and down –
And hit a World, at every plunge,
And Finished knowing – then –

I'm about halfway through...so far so good! I really like the new characters he brought in this time.

The quote of the day from Jack Campbell's wonderful Military Sci-Fi (far future) adventure "Valiant"...
"Thousands of years of Human Technological advancement had yet to produce a single piece of equipment thatwas Marine-Proof, or sailor-proof, for that matter. That was one of the main reasons why chief petty officers in the fleet and sergeants in the Marines had no fear of being rendered obsolete,
since one of their primary functions remained to yell, "Don't touch anything unless I tell you to,..."
Yeah, you can tell this guy (Jack Campbell) has spent time in the US NAVY.

My husband doesn't read fiction but every so often I read him a short excerpt from some of the books I'm reading. Quotes like this definitely get a nod, as he is a retired USN chief.
Same here. Retired OSC(SW). And he might like the Lost Fleet. It's. sci-Fi but there is a lot of sensible Navy in it.

Might try that. He's also a retired engineer and most of what he reads are things like the science/physics books by Michio Kaku ... or books that go back to early 1900s cowboy/ranch memoirs, as he grew up in Wyoming and worked on a cattle ranch summers.
He might like Lost Fleet, the science is pretty sound. He might like Coyote by Allen Steele to...Anther one with sound science.
