I can recommend it. Also Sea Hawk which is based on another Sabatini book.

Mike's right. You can probably get it free on Youtube. Just do a websearch.

Okay ... I think I have to read another story just like that (heavy heavy feminine sigh)!"

All those are good recommendations, Mike, and, I like

Ramage by Dudley Pope. It's a little later time period, but it's a fun tale of War at sea, love, and even has a "rag-wagon duel" or two with cannons blasting!

you can get it on Kindle (read it on the computer) maybe get it from the Library?

Dudley Pope is a protege' of C.S. Forester who wrote the famous Horatio Hornblower Tales.

I really liked it.

Have you seen the sword fight scene from an old movie of Scaramouche? Classic. Can't remember the actor. Might be Flynn. (And just for the record, Erol Flynn is even befor my time.

No it's Stewart Granger. It's a good movie and I like it a lot, but it looses a lot that's in the book. But as I said, still really good flick.

Granger's a good actor.

Eileen Currently enjoying the audio version of Monster Hunter Alpha. This series is one of my favorites to listen too. Also reading Dark Hollow

You're not kidding about the action. I'm about 80 pages in and it's really cooking already.

I've been looking at some his later books and it seems like they are getting average reviews. Have you read any of his other titles?

Okay, you got me. I just downloaded samples of Cabinet of C and A7. However...A7 better be tight at $8.99 on Kindle. I mean, really now.

message 1312: by Eileen (new)

Eileen You guys have me wanting to read that now, too. I'll just have to wait for a sale.

I really loved Cabinet......until the end. I still gave it 4 stars, so that tells you how much I loved most of the book.

So far, A7 has great pacing, I'm really flying through. It has a bit of a conspiracy theory vibe. Did you read the first Scarecrow, Ice Station? I read it over vacation this summer and really enjoyed that also.

Jim: Area 7 is a great nonstop action book. I do recommend reading Ice Station first though. It is the first of the series and introduces all the major players. As much as I enjoyed Area 7, I liked Ice Station even more. Never a dull moment in either book.

Ctgt: The only non Scarecrow book I have read is Temple and that one was good too. Still a Scarecrow fan though.

Yea, Ice Station was kind of like Monster Hunter International... without the monsters well... not those kinds of monsters anyway. Fun book.

message 1317: by Jim (new)

Jim Crocker | 271 comments You guys are killing me here! Just downloaded the sample for Ice Station. Another whopping $8.95 ea. Whaddaya getting a percentage or something? I just started Gone Girl, so it will be a while.

message 1318: by Eileen (new)

Eileen I'll jump on the Ice Station bandwagon, one great book.

Jim, I recently finished Gone Girl. I'll be interested to hear what you think.

Jim Crocker | 271 comments Have you read the Thomas Perry books set in and around Tanawanda, NY? I'll try and remember to comment on Gone Girl. My wife didn't like it. I think the format of the book so far is interesting: The husband as narrator and main POV and the wife's diary entries. Things are starting to get a little creepy though, and I'm only on page 48.

message 1320: by Eileen (new)

Eileen I had no idea that there was a book set around Tonawanda by Thomas Perry. Could you tell me the title, I loved to read it.

Regarding, Gone Girl, I'm with your wife. From what I can tell, men seem to like it more then the women. I have a few ideas why, but, I don't want to give the story away.

In my never to be humble opinion Cabinet Of Curiosities is the first of the really great Pendergast books. There are several outstanding ones, but the last two sorta frizzled. Still Life With Crows is next. I can't seem to remember all the titles. Drat!

I have read several of the Pendergast books(not in any kind of order) and liked them well enough. I was loving this until the very end. I thought the reasoning/method of one of the antagonists was fairly mundane.

Reminded me of
The Devil In The White City: Murder, Magic, And Madness At The Fair That Changed America.

Unfortunately, I didn't go to the Stones concert here in little Missoula, Montana. But I could hear it. It was LOUD. And it was super. And I was kicking myself for not going. I think their light tower was five stories high. If they ever come back, I'm going. There's nothing like 'em.

I'm currently working through the audiobook: Pandora's Star by Peter F. Hamilton. So far its good, though I had so much going on when I listened to the early chapters I may have missed something. Right now it reminds me of Coyote by Allen Steele wich is a good thing. Civilized space here is much more complex but it's that mosaic image where the story is made up of tiny tiles of individual lives that come together ot be a novel thing that's the same.

So far it's a like.. we'll see how good it gets for me!

message 1338: by Allison (new)

Allison (aquabel) | 33 comments I'm a bit behind here, but like Eileen, I'll jump on the Ice Station bandwagon as well. It was the first Matthew Reilly book I read, and I thought it was great! It's actually one of the first action/adventure books I read, and got me into the genre (that and a James Rollins book).

I loved Ice Station, Scarecrow and Area 7. Scarecrow returns was good, but I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the earlier ones. I enjoyed his first Jack West book 7 Deadly Wonders, but wasn't as keen on the other 2.

I also enjoyed Temple and Contest.

Scott | 126 comments I recently finished The Black Dahlia and yesterday finished Equal Rites.

The last 1/4 of Black Dahlia was excellent and I thought Equal Rites was much better thanThe Color of Magic. I will definitely read more of both series.

Ctgt Just finished The Rook and overall I enjoyed it. It reminded me of the MHI series just a bit, although not nearly as much action.

A covert, British government backed group that fights supernatural phenomenon. The book starts with the main character not remembering who she is and the book is as much about her recovering "herself" as over the top action.
