Have you guys read MHI #5 yet? What did you think? I haven't gotten to it yet.

message 4552: by Tim The Enchanter (new)

Tim The Enchanter MHI #5 was good but the weakest of the series IMO. it was gar more political than his others. that said, it was still great

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments Yeah mhi 5 was prob the weakest. It is all about Franks and is quite interesting. Just has less monster hunting than normal

You have to read Ice Station. That is still my favorite by Reilly!

Rizwan Khalil Danielle The Book Huntress (Angels Weep For Goodreads) wrote: "You have to read Ice Station. That is still my favorite by Reilly!"

Agreed. Thats my most favorite Reilly to date too. After finishing Scarecrow and the Army of Theives last year, I'm impatiently waiting to see the return of Shane Schofield, but unfortunately from Reilly's interviews, it looks like it'll be a while after the return of Jack West Jr in a new adventure and maybe a new novella starring the great Black Knight (from Scarecrow), which should be great I think.

Anyway, finished reading The Dragon Factory, and although it was good, entertaining fun timepass, the 1st Joe Ledger thriller Patient Zero was much better imo. I really didn't care for jumping through all the hundreds of subplots and flashbacks and side characters... To me it just made the pace slower and the book unnecessarily bloated.

Here's my Dragon Factory review:

Rizwan Khalil Just finished reading Joe Ledger#3 The King of Plagues. Very enjoyable fun read, much better than the previous one Dragon Factory but the 1st one Patient Zero still remains my favorite. I'm really loving this series and can't wait to finish the rest!

Eileen Finish Chosen loved it! Now I'm slowly getting through The Black Angel it's fast paced in some areas, then drags a little in some spots. It's interesting and a well written story.

The River of Souls I've finished The Atlantis Gene and The Atlantis Plague. I've started Departure because I hit the wrong button, but it's a good science driven techno-thriller with a twist. They were good reads, I'll read #3. I also finished all the Honor Harrington I can handle for a while. The Short Stories in the Honor-verse are the really good if you like Sci-fi stories.

I managed to finish The River of Souls too. That's a fun series that's a little different. There's action but, mostly it's adventure and mystery. McCammon's descriptions are really wierd but delightful.

message 4569: by David (last edited Mar 20, 2015 11:02AM) (new)

David Dalton | 152 comments Travis of NNY, I enjoyed "The Waste Lands" a lot as well. My favorite Dark Tower book was the next one for you: Wizard and Glass (The Dark Tower, #4) by Stephen King . To those readers discovering Joe Ledger, I love that series. Patient Zero got me hooked on Jonathan Maberry and branched me off into his Pine Deep triology: Ghost Road Blues.

As for me I am into the 2nd Rho Agenda sci-fi thriller: Immune (The Rho Agenda, #2) by Richard Phillips . Reading this because I got hooked on the Jack Gregory character featured as a secondary character in Rho Agenda and now staring in his own series (a prequel to Rho Agenda) as the lead character.

Two books already read and enjoyed: Once Dead by Richard Phillips and Dead Wrong (The Rho Agenda Inception) by Richard Phillips . While the Rho Agenda series maybe a strong PG-13, the Dead series is a strong "R" rated series. Jack "The Ripper" Gregory is fast becoming my #1 action character, giving the Scarecrow a run for his money.

I've finished theThe Atlantis Gene trillogy. It makes for an interesting series. The last one and the first ones are the best.

I also readDeparture, selected by accident. It turned out to be a good dystopian mystery. A bit slow at either end, but but lots of fun in the middle and the mystery was good. (Maybe not an action adventure like the Atlantis Series.)

I am now reading Empires and Barbarians: The Fall of Rome and the Birth of Europe by Peter Heather. Facinating, but a little complex if you are not used to non-fiction history books.

message 4579: by Scott (new)

Scott | 126 comments I finished Seven Deadly Wonders. Then I tried to start two different books but I just couldn't get into them. So I read the short story from King: A Face in the Crowd.

Now I'm reading The Name of the Wind.

message 4580: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 9 comments I am reading a new author and a new character/heroine- Author is Taylor Stevens, started with the first one in the Vanessa "Michael" Monroe series - The Informationist. I like Monroe - different character and in a different part of Africa for this book. (Reading a library - hardcover book - as that has been the question lately!!). Monroe gets her information anyway she can. Of course she is also good with a knife, but her planning and approach is new for a women in this genre. Or should I say not many women in the genre. Enjoying the book and will try the others- I think there are 2 or 3 others in the series. I may have found the author and character from a Goodreads group. Love the sharing we have - I have benefited so I will share as well. Enjoy - has anyone else read any in this series?

This book hooked me on the series as well. The first book was particularly good, others are good, some better than others, but I've read the entire series and it hasn't disappointed me yet. I agree that the character is definitely not traditional.

Jordan Wareham | 9 comments Sharon wrote: "Just finished Sandstorm which was the expected fast action Sigma book ... good characters, spooky hidden city, nasty bad guys ... all of the required elements of good A/A reading."

What is it based around? Is it a spy novel or something else? Looking for my next book to read :)

message 4591: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 449 comments Sandstorm is the first of the Sigma Force novels, which are all pretty straightforward A/A ... a somewhat covert U.S. group, with a opposing ongoing 'evil' group and most of the novels are based on some kind of battle between the two for some new technology or an unknown technology found in an archaeological site.

If you've read any of the Clive Cussler books, those are the closest type to the James Rollins novels that I can think of and mot of Rollins books have an archaeology link.

I finished The Crusades by Zoé Oldenbourg. Interesting and, practically dizzying. So it's not action fiction, but there is a lot of action, sort of...

To put the past two books to good use, I picked up A Crucible of Souls by Mitchell Hogan.

It's narrated by Oliver Wyman. THose of us who listen to a lot of audiobooks should remember Wyman's narration of the Monster Hunter International Pentathology. Started with a bloody sword fight and magic duel in the woods... can't be all bad.

I just finished Blood Oath. Think of Matthew Reilly or James Rollins meets Monster Hunter International. For 140 years, Nathaniel Cade has been the President's Vampire, sworn to protect and serve his country against the supernatural. This was a great urban fantasy story full of lots of action. Definitely nothing like your typical vampire story. This was the first book of the series and I see lots of room for improvement, but overall a good read and I am looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.
