Welcome, sorry I haven't read them.

Tad (tottman) | 74 comments I can't help you with the Rogue Angel books, but you might be interested in the The Blood Gospel (Order of the Sanguines series) which is sort of in the historical thriller category, or maybe The House of Shattered Wings which features angels in sort of an alternate history fantasy.

message 4703: by Steve (new)

Steve Martinson Thanks Mike and Tad. Tad, I will check those out. I am interested in angel stories and series that are not quite so heavy in the romance dept., and those sound good. Thanks again!

I just finished the Fear series (first book: Fear the Sky) by Stephen Moss. Lots of action, lots of sci-fi stuff. It could use some editing but it was certainly a fun read/listen.

I just finished Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series (first book: Furies of Calderon) This is a fantastic Epic Fantasy series with a very interesting magic system. It is pattered after ancient Rome and the expanding Roman legions in the beginning, then the fall of Rome in the end. There are wolf-men (Carne) and Indians (Merat) and all sorts of cool beasties.

And, for an epic fantasy novel, this series is full of action and battle and all sorts of stuff like espionage and sabotage and ... it's just a good read! (six books)

Enjoying that book. I picked up The Aeronaut's Windlass. This book is John Carter of Mars meets the Napoleonic War! ... Very cool. Jim Butcher moves from Urban Fantasy (Dresden) to Epic Fantasy (Codex Alera) and now takes on Steam Punk.

Lots of action and I love Butcher's description of the first "dive" into battle... SHIPS THAT FLY! HOW COOL IS THAT!

I liked Lightning. Another Dean Koontz book that I enjoyed from that era of his writing is Twilight Eyes.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just finished listening to The City on the Edge of Forever: The Original Teleplay by Harlan Ellison. This episode aired April 6, 1967 & has been voted the best original Star Trek episode ever. This audio version is kind of a nerd's paradise since it is a teleplay of an early script & has other revisions all read by a great cast along with essays by writers & actors. I saw the original TV episode when it aired & loved it. I've seen it a dozen times since then & own it, so I was very excited about this audio/teleplay edition which was funded through a KickStarter program in the fall of 2015 by Skyboat Media.

Unfortunately, Ellison & Roddenberry got into a fight about this episode & this is Ellison's side. The bias is tough to take & I had to knock stars off for it. Still, it was great to hear such a fine cast reading the teleplay. My 3 star review with details (a lot!) is here:

message 4717: by Lance (new)

Lance Charnes (lcharnes) | 226 comments Just finished Crush . It's a fast, fun, vitamin-free ride while you're in the thick of it and being dragged along at warp speed; it's only when you stop that the whole thing dissolves into fairy dust. At bottom, it's a novelization of a Vin Diesel movie that hasn't been made yet, with all that implies. Two stars.

Crush by Phoef Sutton

Now reading Shock Wave .

Shock Wave (Virgil Flowers, #5) by John Sandford

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I was very pleasantly surprised by Johnny D. Boggs' writing of West Texas Kill. I'm pretty hard to please when it comes to westerns, but he did everything write. I gave it 4 stars in my review here:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 4733: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The Scarecrow by Michael Connelly was a great addition to his Harry Bosch universe, although this is the second book (The Poet was the first) to star the team of Jack McEvoy & Rachel Walling. The newspaper reporter & FBI agent are on the trail of another serial killer, but for all the similarities, it's a great read. I gave it 4 stars in my review here:

I've just finished "BRANNANS RUN" It's headlong action all the way. It also has an awesome twist in the middle. "BRANNANS CHASE" is the next one in the series and I can't wait. Spare time and money well spent and there are not a lot of books you can say that about these days !

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The World of Jack London was a wonderful collection of his Alaskan stories. Well, horribly wonderful. Nothing warm & fuzzy about them, for sure. Audio is a perfect medium, too. I almost felt as if I was there, even though it's in the 90s here. I gave it 5 stars in my review:

message 4738: by KEVIN (new)

KEVIN | 9 comments Brannan’s Chase Fast and furious modern pulp with real characters and locations. Well worth a read.

message 4739: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Etiquette & Espionage by Gail Carriger wasn't my normal read, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I took a walk on the wild side in a Victorian steam punk novel. I gave it 4 stars in my review here:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I bought The Dark End of the Street: New Stories of Sex and Crime by Today's Top Authors for one short story. The rest were just icing on the cake. I gave it an overall rating of 3 stars here:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 4740: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The Fifth Witness by Michael Connelly is a Mickey Haller book, #22 in the Harry Bosch Universe. It was well read, but uneven. Still, I wound up giving it 4 stars in my review here:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 4741: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) One Endless Hour by Dan J. Marlowe is the second in his Drake series. It's similar to Richard Stark's Parker series, but the character is a bit more human. I gave this book 4 stars in my review here:

message 4744: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The Drop by Michael Connelly was an excellent addition to the long running Harry Bosch series. It's hard to believe how fresh the story felt when it is #17 in that series or #23 in the HB Universe. I gave it a 4 star review & can't recommend it or the series highly enough for anyone who likes police procedurals.

message 4745: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Operation Flashpoint by Dan J. Marlowe is the fourth in his Drake series. I'm afraid it jumped the shark. It was still fun, but I miss the grit of the first couple. I still gave this book 3 stars in my review here:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 4750: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I really like the Alan Grofield novels, a spin-off of Richard Stark's Parker novels. Grofield is more fun & certainly has a better sense of humor than Parker, though. I've read all 4 now & this one, The Blackbird, third in the series, is the best. I gave it 4 stars in my short review.
