Jim (jimmaclachlan) Depraved Indifference by Robert K. Tanenbaum was very well narrated, had great characters, & what could have been a good plot. Unfortunately, it did not mix well for me & I only gave it a 2 star review. It is the second in a series, but I don't think I'll listen to another.

message 4752: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Treachery's Tools by L.E. Modesitt Jr. is the 10th book in his Imager series, second in this particular arc & really well done, as usual. He's one of the few authors whose books I pre-order in hardback. This is a fantasy world with one very particular sort of magic, imaging. In this book, he describes a little bit of the struggle of a nation that is changing from feudalism to capitalism. I gave it a 4 star review. Highly recommended.

message 4753: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The Gods of Guilt by Michael Connelly was another wonderful addition to the Harry Bosch Universe, although Harry barely appears. Mickey Haller, the Lincoln Lawyer, stars & does a great job bringing out the truth in court. Plenty of twists & turns, great characters, & all, as usual. I gave it a 4 star review.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Quarry in the Black by Max Allan Collins is the 13th in the series & garnered a 3 star review from me only because I like the character so much & have fond memories of the series.

J. (jdrew) | 140 comments I am just starting Innocent Blood (The Order of the Sanguines, #2) by James Rollins and trying to get it finished before Jan 1 so I can meet my own target for books read this year.

message 4759: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 362 comments I found myself in the mood for a specific type of book the other day. Took a while to find exactly what it was I craved. The Templar Legacy was what I settled on. Was pretty good not great but I will try the next in series sometime. Apparently though, it didn't quite satisfy my need for this type of book as I started The Da Vinci Code. All these type of books have a certain similarity to them but tend to be fairly quick reads that don't require a lot of concentration to follow. Which is good sometimes

I just finished the Travis Chase Trilogy by Patrick Lee The Breach Ghost Country Deep Sky. I loved the idea of the "breach" and to be honest, I wish this series would have continued. I didn't quite like the quick "wrap up" at the end and felt that there was so much more story that could have been told. I enjoyed each book equally well...just wish there were more!

J. (jdrew) | 140 comments Still working on The Alphabet House by Jussi Adler-Olsen complex but slow, for me. Tension is there so I continue to read on.

message 4768: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I just finished The Menacers, the 11th Matt Helm book by Donald Hamilton, as an audio book. It was a lot of fun. Written in 1968, it used the UFO craze as the basis of the plot. Really well done, but I think that would age it badly for anyone who doesn't remember the time & paranoia. I gave it a 4 star review here:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Now I've started on the second John Rain book A Lonely Resurrection (mine is titled "Hard Rain") by Barry Eisler. It's pretty good so far. Eisler is wordier than Hamilton, but he's explaining Japan at the same time.

message 4769: by J. (new)

J. (jdrew) | 140 comments I finished People of Darkness (Leaphorn & Chee, #4) by Tony Hillerman which was enjoyable as expected and I'm just beginning Dragon Princess Dragon Princess by Jason P. Crawford . First time I've tried this author so looking forward to something different.

Just finished Fragment by Warren Fahy . I wasn't sure I was going to like it when I first started (the reality show bit kind of turned me off), but after about a quarter of the way in, I was hooked. A great book for Jurassic Park fans. Lots of interesting creatures and lots of action! Maybe a tad too much science, but I'm a science geek so I found it interesting.

How did you like Armada Scott? Cline's Ready Player One is one of my all time favorites, but I haven't read Armada yet...I know there are mixed reviews.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Cowboys and Gangsters: Stories of an Untamed Southwest by Samuel K Dolan is a nonfiction account of the early 1900s along the Mexican border from Texas to Arizona. It mostly documents the crazy period of Prohibition. The old meeting the new, cowboys chasing bootleggers with cars, lots of shooting, & other violence, but all told in a factual way through newspaper accounts & reports. Quite interesting. I gave it a 4 star review here:

I keep telling myself that I need to start reading more nonfiction. I always seem to enjoy it when I do!
