Jud, to me a fanny is someone's backside. I had to explain to a new American music teacher in our last British International School that telling the children to sit on their fannys wasn't quite acceptable. Lol

There were 4 of us - Highwayman, CW, Geoff and myself (and Judith losing her nerve... I must admit I sat and listened for a while before I joined in)
(Oh and it was actually Geoff's daughter singing, but don't tell anyone)

4 live conversation works very well.
Skype behaved well.
Not sure how it will be with 5+ on a call - but we will soon find out :)

Well yes Patti fanny isn't quite the bottom over here but in aberdeen it apparently also means idiot or daft, its usually said in quite an affectionate way, i've never come across anyone saying it in anger. There's another word in Scotland that is maybe the equivalent of fanny for the rest of the uk only for me this word is just an alternative pronounciation/spelling of twit, back home it doesnt have the same anatomical meaning

Yes that alternate spelling of twit is the same as the 'c' word where I'm from. Not to be used in polite society. Actually they're both ultimate misogynistic put downs. But only a dick would use either of them ;)

I so enjoy exploring words. Where they originate and how their meaning changes with time, etc.

I must admit I found the real time chat (typed) the best part of the whole thing.

So was just audio, not video as well then? Makes sense. I do wonder what sort of quality will be achieved when I access it. And if I'll be able to understand Simon when I can't read his lips....

Audio is the "standard" out of the box configuration.

Video needs a camera thingy.

Not sure if those of us without a camera can join a conference, and not sure that many of us want to go the whole hog of revealing that we are all actually Brad Pitt / Angolina Jolie lookalikes. (Oh I wish I could spell) :)

Simon, your accent is lovely. It took me about five years of nodding and smiling pleasantly at my fatherinlaw before I realised he wanted the salt. You aren't nearly that bad! I'm ever so pleased I won't have to put on lippy before I Skype! I hate for you all to know I don't look like Brad!

I'm not sure whether you can have video conferences. I know that didn't used to be able to, but the software, etc, may have improved since then.

Perhaps we should set up a "book choice" audio conference one of the weeks.

I'm not gonna be able to make it for the next chat (assuming its 1st Sept not August), its girlie night that night

I could do it from the pub as it has free wifi. The pub quiz is next Wednesday at 8:30. I wonder if he would allow a virtual team. I could put the laptop in the middle of a table and four pints of beer around it. Obviously I would have to drink the beers for you....

A skype quiz might be fun but everyone would have to promise not to google the answers and Geoff would have to promise not to sing.

I think we could trust everyone to not google.

Hehe I had a table full of kids banned from playing last year as they were googling on their phones. Well, the prize was £100!

Let me get back to the island and I'll happily set a quiz. Dave and I usually do a quiz there every half term or so. We do ten questions in five categories, so fifty questions. Usually takes about three hours but we break in the middle for about 20 minutes to get a plate of food. We do like to make an evening of it. We could do 20 or so questions for the group quiz, though. Aim for about an hour? What does everyone think?

I'm taking the plunge and signing up for skype - the fact that I can skype to my cousin in Oz is a bonus.

I can't promise I'll be around on 1st September but hopefully there will be more chats in future.

A 3 hours quiz? That is only 2 hours and 59 minutes longer than my average attention span!

When I signed up it wanted to know if I wanted a profile picture and my webcam came on...blimey, what a fright...looked like Jabba the Hut. Not doing that again in a hurry...lol.
If a picture does come up it should be the same as the one on here, hopefully.
