Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I watched this http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235060/ a few months ago on DVD. It really is a fabulous film and so uplifting. A beautiful non-marshal arts love story.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments But if you want to see the Chinese equivalent of Gladiator, then this is the one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299977/ .

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments A Beautiful Mind

Wonderful film, amazing book.

Russell Crowe at his best, I think.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I watched Apollo 13 last night. I remember the original event so well, I really had trouble getting round to watching the film. Having said that, the movie was brilliant and really captured the mood of the times.

I want to read the books before I watch the film, although I'm sorely tempted.

I watched Source Code this evening. A very entertaining film and I can understand the references to Sliding Doors and Groundhog Day.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Has anyone else seen the short Australian animation The Lost Thing. I've watched it a few times and have found it quite magical. If anyone has 15 minutes to spare and would like to see it, it is on YouTube here:

I welcome your opinions, as always.

Katy | 2662 comments I watched 'The Princess Bride' recently, as I haven't seen it in a while. Such a great film!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Speaking of Australian film, Dave has got Mad Max two on the telly. I'm not enjoying it. I'll watch your posting instead, thanks!

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I've got a copy of Black Sheep (No Simon, not the ale.) that I'm looking forward to watching. Again. Australian, but supposed to be quite a laugh when the sheep turn monsterous.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Geoff, that was magnificent! However did you find it?
Will have to watch it a few more times to catch all the nuances.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I heard the director being interviewed on Front Row on Radio 4. I just love animated films. Myakagi is one of my hero's. Some of his films, like My Neighbour Totoro (A wonderful childrens movie, but fabulous for adults too.) and Spirited Away are just masterpieces.

One film he made, Grave of the Fireflies, is absolutely heartbreaking. It is about two children dying of malnutrition in Japan after World War 2. It could not be made as a normal film as they could not show the terrible emaciation.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Grief. I'm afraid I'll be on you tube all night now. You tube works so well on the iPad, don't you think? Eats away at my data, though.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Time to connect to wifi Patti.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments No point in setting up wifi in the flat as we're only here a few weeks a year. wish I knew how to get the password and username for BT open zone, though. I'm supposed to be able to access it for free with my data plan. Should ring my provider, I suppose.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I have the same plan through Orange. The login is the telephone number of your SIM and a password you are given. With Orange it was a breeze and took 2 minutes.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh I see. I've never been given a password, though. I will have to ring them. Would save me oodles of money. Well not save. Money that I'll then redirect toward buying books, of course!

Thank you, Geoff. It's so nice having a couple of resident geeks!

Xxx

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments What good is knowledge if you cannot share it?

I presume you are with the citrus fruit too?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments No, I'm with O2. I didnt do any research, which was probably silly, but getting it last holiday was a bit of a spur of the moment thing before flying back. I just got the same as my phone as I knew the reception for O2 was good in the flat.

The dude in the apple shop set it all up for me.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Ah well, i'm sure if you give them a ring they'll soon sort out a password for you.

At my sisters' yesterday we watched The King's Speech. We hadn't seen it before and we loved it - such good acting! I had already read The King's Speech and enjoyed that; it's not a book of the film but a biography of Lionel Logue written by his grandson from Logue's diaries and letters. I enjoyed the film even more with the background knowledge I'd gained from reading the book!

:0)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I really enjoyed The King's Speech, too. Perhaps I'll add the biography to the TBR pile.

I'm looking forward to making our way through the huge box of DVDs we're taking back to the island. So many that I can't even remember what we got now.
A load of war films, that I know. Dave likes them and I've actually enjoyed few in the past.

The Pacific and Letters From Iwojima (not sure of the spelling, sorry) were both excellent.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Letters from Iwo Jima is a superb film. Did you get the other film made at the same time Flags of my Fathers? Clint Eastwood made both films at the same time - one showing the Japanese point of view, the other from the American. All the same battle, of course.

Eastwood is one of the greatest film directors of his generation. He is incredibly prolific. He has made more films than Steven Spielburg and George Lucas combined.

You might want to grab hold of Changeling and Grand Torino. Both fabulous films on quite different subjects.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yes we've got flags of our fathers as well. Excellent. I didn't much like Grand Torino. I thought the acting from everyone exept Clint was rubbish and stilted. I've not seen Changling. Will pop it into the ol' shopping basket now, thanks.

Have you seen Band of Brothers?

message 75: by Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (last edited Aug 27, 2011 03:22PM) (new)

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Oh yes, seen Band of Brothers and also the Pacific, that you referred to. BoB is the better series as it just dealt with Easy Company and was therefore more cohesive. The Pacific was good though and well worth seeing.

If you are looking up war movies, look out for We Were Soldiers. Despite starring Mel Gibson, it is a brilliant reproduction of General Hal Moore's book of the first major battle involving the US in Vietnam.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yes We Were Soldiers is great. I didn't think I'd ever enjoy war films but the more recent ones arent all " hoo-haw! Aren't we wonderful!" they show more of the reality of war and it's true effects.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just grabbed the box of DVDs. We seem to have purchased 47 of them. Included in that are 7 series. I think we have enough to make it to Christmas...

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments So when are you back? Have you got 'The Wire'? Fabulous series, but beware, everything is important and it'll take you 2-3 episodes to understand the patois. Also, not for the faint hearted, but well worth the journey.

David Simon, the creator, said he didn't want it to be an easy series, but more like War and Peace, so that when you got to the end of it you knew you'd been on an epic journey. Many people consider it to be the best television series ever made.

You might also want to get a hold of Deadwood. A very good western series. I see Calamity Jane in a whole new light now. It is worth the series just to meet Jewel the cleaner in the saloon. A brilliant character.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Got it and got it. The Wire was excellent.
So disappointed that Deadwood was cancelled. itvshould have run for a lot longer.

Have you watched Carnivale and The Shield? Also The Corner?

message 80: by Patti (baconater) (last edited Aug 27, 2011 04:24PM) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh must say that season two of the wire was disappointing but after that it's excellent.

We'll be back around the middle of December.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I have tried so very hard to watch The Corner. I have it but always fail. I have, however, read David Simon's superb book Homicide http://www.amazon.co.uk/Homicide-eboo.... I was amazed that so many of the incidents portrayed in The Wire were ones he had witnessed whilst with the Baltimore Police Murder Unit.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good morning, Geoff!

I'm just the opposite. I enjoyed The Corner. Dave didn't, though. I watched all but the first episode by myself. I couldn't get into the book. Have given it to the library on the island.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Good morning to you too Patti!

It never fails to amaze me what some people can and can't take. Take for instance, the film Be Kind Rewind, that I referred to above. To me it is a really good, feel good movie (Sorry Ian) with a great story and very comical but not very slapstick despite Jack Black being in it. Other people just don't get it.

Another favourite of mine is Amelie. I loved that film, it was so magical. I saw it again with Linda and my Mom and we got to the end and they both said "What was that all about?" Ah well, if we weren't all different it would be a boring world indeed.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Don't know that one. Will have to have a look.

It'd be horrible if we were all cardboard cut-outs of one another.

I'm in such a great mood this morning! I'm hiding in the bedroom so I don't have to look at all the half-filled boxes and suitcases scattered in every other room in the flat. Including the kitchen worktop. Argh. That one will have to be shifted before I cook today!

Happy thoughts. Happy thoughts.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Amelie is fabulous. A french film that uses vibrant colours and wonderful music. You'll hate it ;-)

No Patti, that's "The Hairdressers Hung Bad".

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) | 2467 comments Just watched Unstoppable with Denzel Washington. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would: With an unmanned, half-mile-long freight train barreling toward a city, a veteran engineer and a young conductor race against the clock to prevent a catastrophe.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Sounds remarkably like 'speed' but that was a bus, yes? Was 'speed 2' on a boat?

Planes, Trains and Automobiles!

Now thatvwas a good film! I miss John Candy. RIP

Yes, Speed 2 was a cruise liner.

Speed 3 was the Father Ted episode with the milk float.

Maureen (Mews) (mews) | 711 comments Geoff...just noticed above you said you were with Orange. Have you noticed any problems the last few days? I've had a terrible time trying to watch things on youtube, bbci player etc. And my latency when online gaming has been erratic with frequent disconnets.

(Sorry to go off-topic).

message 95: by willie (new)

willie (williewit) `Unknown` ...not a bad thriller, I spoiled it tho by sussing it half an hour in. I am a silly billy for doing that sort of thing.

Kerstie | 42 comments my son and i watch 3 films on dvd that we borrowed from the library at the moment they hire them out 3 dvds for a week for £2 normally its £1 per dvd per week. we watched gullivers travels, the legends of guardians and animals united. my 7 yr old son has a concentration problem and cant sit still for long or be quiet so ive not taken him to the cinema yet.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Wow, that's a good deal, Kerstie! Much better than going to the cinema, paying a silly amount of money and listening to rude people on mobiles, etc. Nice that you can pause the film and discuss it with your lad whenever you wish, as well.

message 98: by Kerstie (new)

Kerstie | 42 comments it is great as he loves going to choose his books and as a treat i got the dvds as i had feeling it was going to be wet. i now for a fact if we went to the cinema any new noise etc he would be "mum whats that noise? whys that person talking?" at home its much easier for him to concentrate as he is a bright child and takes things in but slightest distraction hes gone. he loved the films. also money is tight so i can find a £1 where as cinema is lots of £s.

I've had to restart my Orange router several times in the last few days.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I think we are confusing services with regards to Orange. Caroline, you are referring to the Orange broadband service. I, however, am using the Orange mobile 3G service on my iPad. I'm not sure which service Maureen is using.
