I want to read the books before I watch the film, although I'm sorely tempted.

The books are much better Geoff

@ Geoff/Patti - I agree with you about Amelie. Chocolat is also a great film. Have to say that even tho it's a good film, I thought that "We were Soldiers " fell into the gung ho isn't the US great category for me. Typical Mel Gibson. If anyone likes Vietnam films and fancies a great novel - check out
Matterhorn A Novel of the Vietnam War by Karl Marlantes - kindle summer sale just 99p....probably go back up in a few days.

Deeply affecting book and film.

Catalina (katgabriella) | 169 comments i have finally managed to persuade my boyfriend to watch The Black Swan. it was definitely more then i expected. made me physically sick at times, gave me nausea, terrified, scared, amazed me...such a good film, a great production. i saw other films about ballerinas who cannot bear the pressure of that demanding world, but the way this producer portrayed Nina's struggles its simply brilliant.

The film surprised me a lot as I hadn't expected to enjoy it as much as I did.

I've just watched it...very good but upsetting film. I've never seen it before. I thought the two lads were very good.

message 107: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yes, it's upsetting. Had to distract myself by posting recipes when I started to cry. One of the few books that made me cry, too.

Catalina (katgabriella) | 169 comments I think Amelie its one of my favourite movies, i am a French films passionate...i love french language and culture, hence the interest. Try watching Love me if you Dare(Jeux D'enfants) - another great French film.
This month i have watched Band of Brothers as well...another touching series that initially i was reluctant to watch, thinking about all the blood, death and suffering...
Did not read the Boy in the striped Pajamas yes, but i did see the film...the book its on to-read list...if you liked this film, another great on, similar, its La Vita e Bella ...

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just put the DVD of Stephen's King's The Mist on to watch a few minutes of while I have lunch.

Which reminded me that I left Song Of Susannah back in the UK!

Darn. Guess I'll have to download it. Hehe

message 110: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Well. Just finished 'The Mist'. Another Stephen King story made into a film that was disappointing. Maybe my expectations are too high when it comes to Sai King.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Do you like Dean Koontz Patti?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments The Koontz I've read I've enjoyed, yes. Haven't read many. Last I read were the first two Odd Thomas but that was a few years ago now. I know I've read a few others but no idea what titles.
Do you have a favourite Koontz, Vanessa?

My favourite Dean Koontz book has to be Lightning. Great story from start to finish.

Jackie | 6 comments The only Dean Koontz movies I've seen is Phantoms and Watchers. I wish the movie could be as good as the books :-) I loved to read watchers, but I can't say the same for the movie LOL

@Patti - I enjoyed The Mist, the ending frustrated me to no end, I couldn't believe what happened...

I recently watched When the war began, and I enjoyed it so much, I had to go get all 7 books. It was a great movie.

message 119: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Jackie, the ending frustrated me too! I'm sure the novella didn't end like that. I'll have to see if I have the book here and re-read it. Not sure which collection it's in though. Will have to google.

I didn't know any of the Koontz books had been made into films. Will have to check them out, thanks.

Is this the John Marsden book Jackie?

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I've tried to watch the Reel History programmes with Melvyn Bragg. It's looking at all different things caught on film through history.
So far I've seen the one about the rock'n'roll era and one on WW1 of the men in the trenches.
I've found the films very moving.

Tim (timh1952) Last film I saw at the cinema was the new version of 'Clash of the Titans' in 3D. Good effects but then I remembered why I stopped going to the cinema after I looked into my wallet as I came out of the place. Big hole where money used to be. Thank god for LoveFilm!!

Watched Carlito's Way and Predators last night - hey, I'm a bloke, OK!

message 125: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments I ♥ Predators, one of those movie that I have watched zillions of time but if it's on I'll have to watch it again !

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Love Predator v's Alien. I always root for Predator.
Also like the Fast & Furious films, Die Hard well any action films really.
On the TV I like watching Red Bull X Fighters at the moment.

Just read the synopsis of

Tomorrow, When the War Began (The Tomorrow Series, #1) by John Marsden

looks really good, sort of an intelligent version of Red Dawn

That is one thing I hate about Hollywood, they always have to have a happy ending.

I'm looking forward to the new version of Tinker Tailor, sounds good. Le Carre likes it evidently.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I'm still trying to get over the choice of Tom Cruise playing the part of Jack Reacher in the Lee Child novels. I couldn't think of a worse person for the role!

Exactly, what are they going to do, put him on stilts?
He'd still be wrong for the part, he's not really a tough guy like Reacher.

I expect he will be standing on boxes and all the other actors with either have to be even shorter or go down on their knees when on screen with him...

:0)

message 137: by Tim (new)

Tim (timh1952) I think Daniel Craig would be a better choice.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Tim, now you're talking. I never thought of him but he would be really good in the part.

message 139: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments My lecturer estimated Tom Cruise's height and weight and we calculated his BMI

Tom cruie is obese - FACT

I recognise the name jack reacher but i have no idea where from

Tim (timh1952) Vanessa wrote: "Tim, now you're talking. I never thought of him but he would be really good in the part."

When I read Killing Floor (Jack Reacher, #1) by Lee Child Killing Floor for the first time I visualized Craig in the role of Jack Reacher. He is 5'10" and Cruise is 5'7". On reflection if we want someone taller there is always Gerard Butler, he is 6'2" and I doubt very much if any of you ladies would complain about him getting the part.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments Ooh yeah, he's a bit of all right. I wouldn't say no to either of them!

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I know this is the wrong way round, but I know someone on here keeps chickens but I can't remember who.

Well there's a programme on Channel 4 tonight called Rare Chicken Rescue at 7.35 - 8pm.
It's about a man tracking down and rescueing rare chickens and turkeys across Australia. Also how it helped him battle mental illness.
Looks quite interesting so might give it a look.

Darren Humphries (darrenhf) | 6903 comments Last night I finally trawled to the end of the Torchwood series. It really wasn't worth the effort. Hope Dr Who tomorrow makes up for it, but am not confident.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I prefer Dr Who to Torchwood. I preferred Torchwood when it was set in Wales and had more of a sort of fantasy story. This series didn't seem like Torchwood at all.
