Chiaralletti | 2 comments Hi!
I'm looking for something new to read...

I loved series of His Dark Materials, the Bartimaeus Trilogy, Inkheart (all read in Italian), Percy Jackson and the first 2 books of Kronos Chronicles, read in English.

I would read something that could looks like these books (even they are quite different, I'm looking for "magic atmosphere")

Thank you!

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments One of the best fantasy's I've read in awhile is: Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles, #1) by Melina Marchetta which is by my most recent author obsession.

For somewhat funnier but with magic I suggest Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1) by Rachel Hawkins .

Also recommended: Plain Kate by Erin Bow The Lost Conspiracy by Frances Hardinge

Jo (jowillwrite) | 26 comments I agree with Cassi, Finnikin of the Rock is fantastic and there is a definite sense of magic involved without being whacked over the head with it. :)

I haven't read it yet but Magyk is supposed to be quite good... but I think they're a bit younger than YA (maybe 9-11 or middle grade).

Heidi I have just the book for you. I am mid way through The Emerald Atlas and IMO it is a mix between Dark Materials and Chronicles of Narnia. I also recommend Alanna: The First Adventure and The Book of Three.

message 5: by Roshini (new)

Roshini I just finished Glimmerglass (Faeriewalker, #1) by Jenna Black and it was better than I thought it would be, so maybe you'd like to give it a try? The second and third books in the series are out already. Shadowspell (Faeriewalker, #2) by Jenna Black Sirensong (Faeriewalker #3) by Jenna Black

Tish | 207 comments I'd recommend Over Sea, Under Stone (The Dark Is Rising, #1) by Susan Cooper , Fablehaven (Fablehaven, #1) by Brandon Mull , The Sea of Trolls (Sea of Trolls, #1) by Nancy Farmer , Stoneheart (Stoneheart Trilogy, #1) by Charlie Fletcher , and I second the recommendation for Magyk--to me, the level is very similar to the Percy Jackson and Kronos books.

Chiaralletti | 2 comments Thank you all!

I think I will try with Magyk: my English isn't very good, so if it's for 9-11 or middle grade it could be ok!

And I'm also curious about Finnikin of the Rock, but I can wait.

My only doubt now is: paperback or hardcover? :D

Janet | 80 comments Based on what you like, I'd recommend:
-Tears of the Salamander by Peter Dickinson (set in Italy :)
-The Magic Thief series by Sarah Prineas
-Changeling by Delia Sherman (because you like Percy Jackson- this is similar)
-Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan
-The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper
-Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones
Circle of Magic series and Immortals series by Tamora Pierce
firebirds short story collections
bordertown short story collections

when you're ready for a bit more of a language challenge, but not too bad:
the Heirs of Alexandria series by Mercedes Lackey, Eric Flint, and David Freer - starts with The Shadow of the Lion (also a lot of the action in Italy)
The Tears of the Salamander by Peter Dickinson The Magic Thief (Magic Thief, #1) by Sarah Prineas Changeling by Delia Sherman The Ruins of Gorlan (Ranger's Apprentice, #1) by John Flanagan The Dark Is Rising Sequence (#1-5) by Susan Cooper Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones Wild Magic (Immortals, #1) by Tamora Pierce Sandry's Book (Circle of Magic, #1) by Tamora Pierce Firebirds An Anthology of Original Fantasy and Science Fiction by Sharyn November Welcome to Bordertown by Ellen Kushner The Shadow of the Lion (Heirs of Alexandria, #1) by Mercedes Lackey
