I've got 5 of the Death Stalker books on my shelves gathering dust and giving me nasty looks Darth. Hope I can get to them soon...as with all the books waiting on my shelves to be read. (And all giving me nasty "you're ignoring me" looks.)

You all know how I love the Paksenarrion trilogy. I hadn't had much luck getting into the Vatta books (though I plan to "re-try" them) so I thought I'd take a shot at this "space opera". Starts out a little slowly for me but okay. I'm interested in it, maybe a quarter of the way in.

I think when it comes to action adventure, I'm still liking "Allan Steele's Coyote series" as an action adventure thing. It reads like stories from the frontier. Good fun. (and the audio books are well done.)

The audio books were good. The stories are told in first person by each of the colonists. The narrators changed so they had a bit of personality to them that you could recognize by the voice.

message 83: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 449 comments For whatever reason, I've always liked 'space opera' and military sci-fi ... probably all the Hornblower novels I read in my pre-teens.

Some of the ones I own and re-read include a lot of the David Drake, David Weber, Eric Flint and S. M. Stirling books. Drake and Stirling dud a 5-book series "The General" that is always fun ... bloody, but fun. Weber's "Honor Harrington" series, of course.

One of my favorite series is the "Miles Vorkosigan" series by Lois Bujold. The character is a young, hyperactive military washout on a militaristic planet who slides sideways into off-planet covert ops and his solution to most problems is to move faster and six directions at once. The earlier ones, especially, are a lot of fun. He'd definitely an adrenaline junkie and you can really get addicted as you read. Suspension of belief, naturally, but fun.

In my youth, I read a lot of Ghost Legion by Margaret Weis. Well, not so much youth and between now and my "youth." Those were fun. A little Star Wars (ish) but I didn't care. Fun stories. Hung Out is a spin off of that with three (or 4) of my favorite characters from that series.

Lucifer's Hammer is a superb story. I met Jerry Pournelle once at a party Playboy hosted in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show about 30 years ago.

I let my buddy at work (we swap books) read this Busha's Mistress, Or, Catherine The Fugitive A Stirring Romance From The Days Of Slavery In Jamaica by Robert L. Perkins. It's from a different time and they may be more space opera or more "adventure" than action oriented by todays expectations but I'm really enjoying it.

Soldier of the Legion turned out to be entertaining. And I'll add Dauntless lost fleet is great. I'm up to book 4 and, it may be more of a military space opera, but I like it. Fourth book is the best so far.

F. Paul Wilson has also written Sci-Fi novels. The LaNague series is interesting, the first book being "Healer", followed by "Wheels Within Wheels", and "Enemy Of The State".

If you wanted a recomendation, i'd say read the first one. I got it free on Amazon (but I doubt it is now).

If you like it keep going. The big mystery here is why I've liked it enough to look foreward to the next one enough to read eight of them. But, I have.

I liked Soldier of the Legion better (yes, review on that one somewhere). and one that I didn't mention...

Ghost Legion by Margaret Weis sure, it was a little Star Wars (ish), and also a little "Babylon 5" (ish) with that spin off from Babylon Five (ish) thrown in there.

Still, I found it to be a fun read, the lead character was a bit too whiney and the seasoned veteran across from him was a bit too "gloom-doom-and-more-gloom" but there were some really fun other characters and I thuroughly enjoyed it because of them (The Lodi and the Little one, with the Cyborg)

this produced a spin off that was a lot of fun Hung Out staring the Lodi, The LIttle one and the bald Cyborg guy. Those three were a trip!)

I'd rank "A galaxy Unknown" behind Soldier of the Legion, Hung Out and Ghost legion.

And TUnnel in the sky is a rockin classic as is The Adventures of the stainless steel Rat, which I rank maybe above the others by a narrow margin.

message 97: by Ctgt (new)

Ctgt Just finishing up Old Man's War. It was a little slow in the action department at the beginning, but overall am enjoying the read.

Recently, I really liked Leviathan Wakes, part sci/fi-part detective.

I don't usually read tie in fiction, especially worlds that seem to have a massive amount of history/lore (Warhammer,Forgotten Realms), but I really like Dan Abnett and on a whim I picked up Ravenor: The Omnibus and loved it.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 2933 comments Mod
I really didn't get into Soldier of the Legion (I haven't belabored that because Huge likes it quite a bit). Don't know if that bodes ill for what I'll think about Galaxy U. K. or not.

if you feel forgiving, I'd give "hung out" a try. Those characters were more fun than the

Luke Skywalker and Lay-ya (with experience) Heroines.
