Nobody's added anything to this tread in a while. So, I've got a handful books to add here.

First I'll start with the Spinward Fringe series that starts with by Randolph Lalonde. This series starts with Origins and runs for several books worth. I'm more than halfway through the series, it's set up in groups that the author believes could stand alone if you wanted to jump ahead.

I'm not so sure about that, but I am sure that these are good reads and, I believe, better than Wool Omnibus.

There is a ton of action from gunfights to full out space battles, all teaming with sci-fi tech. Battles wars, bounty hunting, fist fights, cyber-wars and all sorts of imaginable stuff.

I think the blend of story vs. sci-fi elements vs. more fantasy character driven elements in this sereis is almost unique. It's just plain good.

And it's an Indie Pub (first one is free).

And for a special note, the Author was a Customer Service Rep with some company who played table Top RPGs (Role Playing Games) for years. I think this story was born out of the game Traveler (later renamed "Mega-Traveler" that has taken on a lot of different forms.

Action, there's plenty of it here!

Origins (Spinward Fringe) by Randolph Lalonde Spinward Fringe Triton by Randolph Lalonde Spinward Fringe Fracture by Randolph Lalonde Spinward Fringe Frontline by Randolph Lalonde Spinward Fringe Resurrection and Awakening by Randolph Lalonde The Expendable Few - A Spinward Fringe Novel by Randolph Lalonde Freeground (First Light Chronicles, #1) by Randolph Lalonde Spinward Fringe Broadcast 7 Framework by Randolph Lalonde

I'm going to include the Pandora's Star series here. There's just so much in those books that i'd hate to pin it down. Having said that, we have some high tech warriors, some low tech fighting, some xenophobic, aliens bent on genocide and, non-indescriminate use of nukes....sort of.

There's just so much in these books, but, there is definately action. (It's still hard sci-fi to me if I had to pick a genre though.)

Don't let the "Hard Sci-fi" style fool you. This book's got a lot of action in it. It may be long but it's got everything from brawls to car chases to all out space battles and even the cavalry coming to the rescue.

Hi Greig. I had to delete your post because we don't allow self-promotion outside of the approved threads.

You can start a thread under author self-promotions.

Okay, time to add another one to this old, and seldom used dusty tome of wisdom... heh.. get that tome of widome? I just thought of it....(ahem, cough) ...as I was saying...

I'm readin gEarthman Jack vs. The Ghost Planet by Matthew Kadish. First off, this is just a fun, family story so far. Sure its got a goofey love story in it, but most high school "love stories" start pretty goofy in real life, so, art imitates life. It's also got some wonderful bits describing healing from grief and loss. Maybe not special to books, but, this one seemed to ring truer than others.

And, Oh, boy, is there some action. Spaceships...blasters things blowing up, evil aliens, a beautiful princess (that's smarter than the hero...sigh..isn't that always how it winds up?)... ancient caves, narrow escapes, funky space technology... what can only be described as "magic", space battles, alien chase scenes ... you name it!

Just a fun book that doesn't skimp on the action side of things!

I'm into the second of Tanya Huff's Confederation series. The first is full of action and I can recommend it. I'm just starting into the second so the jury's still out on it.

What's the first book? (that sounds good!)

I read the first two books in A Confederation of Valor and enjoyed them. I had never heard of the author before a co-worker loaned me the book.

Evan Phillips | 9 comments I came in here to find some good recommendations and am going to add Tanya Huff to my ever-expanding list. Lots of good suggestions! I can add Rex Chase and The Sentinel: A Rex Chase Novel by Tim Wheat to the list. I met this guy at a restaurant and he was really nice. Then it turned out he writes really good books too! He only has these two right now, but I loved them. The first is heavier on the A/A than the sci-fi whereas the second leans a little more toward the sci-fi. Also, I might have missed this one somewhere in here, but Leviathan Wakes was awesome too!

JDB | 8 comments I find most sci-fi to have element of action/adventure and even horror.

Mike Resnick's sci-fi novels are filled with action and adventure. Edgar Rice Burroughs "Mars" novels are nothing but action/adventure, same can be said if Lin Carter, Michael Moorcock, Ben Bova, Harry Harrison, C.J. Cherryh, David Weber, John Ringo, and the list goes on.

I personally liked the dark, moody atmosphere set by Stephen R. Donaldson in his "Gap Cycle" books.

Pygmy I recently finished a fun sci-fi series by Rachel Bach that was full of action and alien-killing -- Fortune's Pawn (Paradox, #1) by Rachel Bach Honor's Knight (Paradox, #2) by Rachel Bach Heaven's Queen (Paradox, #3) by Rachel Bach

The main heroine is a total mech-fighting junkie of a mercenary who can't help but bury herself deeper into hack-slashable trouble. As a warning to those who don't like romance, there were some squishy romantic portions that surprised me a bit until I realized that the author was trying to mix genres. It doesn't take over the story, though, and always veers back into action!

Matt (imagination_hunter7) | 3 comments I've recently finished The Alliance by Chris G. Wright and I thought it was a brilliant sci-fi by an indie author. It's a big book and has some decent reviews, my own included. But I think this guy really hits the nail on the head https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I highly recommend it for its diverse Action and Adventure, an intriguing plot and engaging reading. There are scenes of battle/space travel that really put me in the middle of it all.

I've also read Ninefox Gambit, another great book. Not as diverse, but really enjoyable and has a satisfying amount of A/A.

Help!

I like military science fiction and I'm in the mood for a good, brain candy, evil aliens invade Earth book. You know where the Army and Marines save the day??? You know like Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt kicking butt in Edge of Tomorrow (before someone tells me O already read All You Need Is Kill I actually liked the movie better here as the books ending seemed a bit contrived...more than the movie even)

So anyway like I said, HELP!

Any suggestions for good Earth invaded books I might not have already read????

Jenny a.k.a....Jenny from the block | 180 comments These stories come to mind:
The war of the words
The invasion of the body snatchers
The day of the triffids
The midwich cuckoos
Not much of the military but certainly GoodReads of invasion from another world

I haven’t read the thing from another world since that is hard to come by but this has the military aspect

Laura Ramos | 5 comments Has anyone read Recursion by Blake Crouch? This book is making my mind go wild! It’s really intricate design is nothing like I’ve read before! Anybody here as thoughts about this book?

message 131: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Recursion was good. I gave it 4 stars & I've read a lot of time travel/alternate dimension stories over the years. It's tough to write one now that doesn't make me yawn, but Crouch managed it.

I really liked the unintended consequences. Some were obvious & inevitable, some became so as we understood better, & they all humanized the entire story. It's bewildering, heart breaking, & all too possible. Like most time travel stories, it covers fixing the past, but it does so in many ways. The small regrets are as well treated as the big ones.

I see a lot of complaints about the science in the community reviews. It's based on quantum mechanics & the issues it has with time plus our senses & consciousness. They're all things we don't understand yet, so I had no problems accepting the premise. Crouch's explanations seemed no less likely than some of the 'real' explanations I've read. It might be a case of ignorance is bliss. I don't understand it, so any fairly cohesive story about it works for me.
