Melki Aaaaa! This group has been WAY too quiet lately! Is everyone on vacation?
I've noticed some other groups have challenges like reading a certain number of books set in other countries or reading a book set in each of the 50 states.

We could make the starting date retroactive to January of this year and have no time limit to complete the challenges.

Would anyone be interested in doing this?

Mary | 236 comments This group HAS been quiet lately! I was away on vacation with my family, with some time for preparation before that. Now that all that's over with, hopefully I can get back into my routine fairly quickly. As for the book challenges, our group has done various challenges in the past and several people enjoyed them. They're not a fit for me, personally, though. I like the freedom of spontaneously deciding on which book to read based on my mood and general circumstances. Other people might like your idea, so it's good you brought it up.

Gretchen (gkonkler5) Depending on the exact nature I might be interested. Like to get to those books that have been on my shelf way too long. Always find a challenge helps with that.

Theresa Maybe if we did a challenge that had a more limited time frame--like a month? Or maybe that would be too much like trying to do a group read? We are such an eclectic bunch here, though, that it may be like herding cats or walking bassets.

Robert (bobhe) Melki

Can I come to your US group Might not read many books but will make you all laugh.Plus I gave Melki stick on UK site so she can get her own back!!!
Is a vacation same as a holiday?
I have seen a challenge for book from all US states
Now a thicko moment is Rhode Island a state and is it the smallest? Can you get a book based there ?
Please feel free to insult my ignorance but remember time difference
Bob

Lynne - The Book Squirrel (squirrelsend) Count me in, I love this kind of challenge as you can get loads of recommendations for other books you wouldn't think of reading.

message 7: by Melki (new)

Melki I'm not suggesting we ONLY read books for the challenge, but I think if you look over the books you've read so far this year, you might be surprised how many you've already read from another country or from each state. I checked my state list today and I've already got 19. Lynne - welcome to the group! And Bob...sigh...I guess you can join in too...if you promise to behave yourself.

Melki If we are going to do this, could one of the moderators create two new folders - one for "Reading 'Round the World" and one for "50 State Challenge"? Then anyone who wants to participate can create a topic and list their books. Thanks!

message 9: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (gkonkler5) Melki I'm curious is there a way you can easily tell where you books take place? Not sure I always remember and typically don't keep track.

Robert (bobhe) So IS Rhode island a state???

message 11: by Melki (new)

Melki Bob - RI is indeed a state. I've read a book set there, but it was last year, so I won't count it.
Don't ever remember reading a book set in Delaware.
Gretchen - if you own the books you've read, sometimes the location will be mentioned in the liner notes or back cover. Occasionally the setting is listed in the description on Amazon or GRs. I read a few this year that never say where the action is taking place.

And once again - I'm not suggesting that you ONLY read books to meet the challenges. Just read what you want, but take note of the setting, and you might find that it's a "place" you've never "been" before.

Libby I'd be game to take part in a challenge, though I'm afraid my reading time may be limited this fall as I am headed back to school. I'll do my best though, and I always love to see what everyone else is reading!

Theresa I like the idea of a long-term challenge, a kind of journey, with a folder where we can post our progress.
