Paranormal Romance & Urban Fantasy discussion

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in quite the right section because I'm finding the darn book impossible to finish. I've tried plugging on with it for months now; and I just can't get to grips with the style of writing at all. Has anyone else read this? I'd be curious for the opinion of others. This is my first ever post; so I look forward to getting to know you all.

I haven't read it but I have heard others say the same thing.
I tried reading Dracula last year and just couldn't get into it and I heard this one is a lot like it.
I usually love classics but some of them, I just can't get into.
If I were you, I would just read something else and maybe come back to it later, or just not.
I use to make myself read all the books I started and I just don't anymore. My time is too valuable and there are too many great books out there I could be enjoying instead. ;)

I just picked up that book at a book fair this weekend.I'll let you know how it goes.

Not every book will grab you, even ones that are super popular (um, for me, Da Vinci Code, The Kite Runner, Justine-which made me really sad). I agree with Mlpmom, there are too many great books to waste time on ones that don't suck you in. I quit reading for education/enlightenment when I graduated college...

That being said, I have wanted to try to read Dracula.

I love Dracula. It's so intense - it's not a long book - and it has all that fin de siecle decadence.
But there are lots I tried and just couldn't get into. Remains of the Day - I know it's a great book, beautifully written, and A Room With A View, too. Just can't get into them.

Dracula I could read fine, but perhaps you guys are right; maybe I should give this one up and come back to it. I've spent 2 and a half years reading a book before now!

I actually enjoyed reading Dracula. I haven't tried reading The Historian yet but it sounds like it would be an interesting read.

Funny that you mentioned that you couldn't get into it, because my dentist has been after me to read The Historian! Now I'm having second thoughts...

I read The Historian a couple of years ago. I put it into the Literary category really well written and researched but not as entertaining as a typical PNR. That said I love the original Dracula. It was one of the first vampire stories after all and it stands up really well considering it was written well over a century ago and in Victorian times. All that repressed passion and symbolism. I think I remember reading that it was only a moderate success in Bram Stoker's actual lifetime and has gained incredible momentum since. Oz Lisa.

i read it a few years back...there is actually a discussion on it here about nothing worse than a bad book...for me, it was ok...I took it with me on a deployment because we could only take 30lbs of gear with us (pre-kindle days) and I figured a long book would be better...but yeah - it was ok...i have her second book on the pile and not even interested in picking it up yet

I read it years ago. As I recall it was like an interesting tour of the history and culture of parts of Europe, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, with a vampire thrown in at the end. I think the vampire killed someone, somewhere along the line, but all in all, he may as well have sparkled, for all that he totally lacked any kind of menace.

I'm trying very hard to finish A Discovery of Witches because so many people have recommended it to me, but I'm stuck in the middle of it! There are things I like quite a bit about it (the setting) but, wow, I am bogged down by a lot of it, too.

I borrowed it from my library's Overdrive account and need to read the last 300 pages in about four days. I'm not sure I'm up to the challenge, lol.
