Hlrs | 5 comments Back in the late 70's I read a sci fi book where the society was divided into two classes those who ruled and those who were ruled and where one class used and fixed machinery and the other could not. When one of the main charaters challenged this notion he dissapears only to emerge inside the city and discover that only those who challenge the idea get to become one of those chosen to look after machines and rule....Does this sound familiar to anyone by any chance

It was part of my English course in Highschool year 10

Hlrs | 5 comments Had a read of your suggestion Anthem by Ayn Rand, but it is not the one, from memory one of the first settings is in a field where an older young man and a teenager are waiting on a "fixer to repair a broken machine"

Kris | 215 comments Could it be Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut?

I have the gut feeling I've read the book you are describing and I know I read Player Piano back in the mid 80s.

M (miyu) | 82 comments Could this be "This star shall abide " by Sylvia Engdahl, the plot certainly reminds me of it.
