Erin | 6 comments I love Apocalyptic fiction. Seems like I have read all the 'popular/mainstream' books. Ya’ll have helped me out before so here I am again.
I like it to be more realistic. Tells how/what is happing to civilization as its 'ending' and then the after effects. Doesn't really matter what causes the apocalypse, but not a HUGE fan of the zombies. Even though one of my favorites was The Passage. ;) YA, Adult doesn’t matter, but I don’t like short stories. I prefer to read more current, just for the realism. Hard to get into the end of the world when they aren’t talking about computers and stuff.
Ok, my top favorites:

One Second After by William R. Forstchen
The Passage
Life As We Knew It
Alrighty then. Hope I did this right. Whatcha got?
TYIA.

well, there is America Pacifica, which i think i mentioned in another thread. no zombies, i promise! the best thing about this book was the minor details - little snippets about how things are after the event, and what kinds of solutions are being attempted. the "main" story was not phenomenal, but i think it is definitely worth reading if you like this kind of literature.

World Made by Hand
The Witch of Hebron

are about a return to agrarian culture after an event. lots of details about the "new" day to day. i have only read the first one - there are hints of magic, but nothing overt. maybe more in the second book.

i feel like i keep recommending the same books, but there are a lot of similar questions on here, which is good, because these are books i like to read, too, so i am taking notes on other ideas...

i probably have more, but let's see what else happens...

Erin | 6 comments Cool. I was looking at the other post, but figured I would add this one since I was looking for more real stuff. Like "wow, this can really happen!!" Or “ Wow, this IS going to happen” When I was reading One Second After I kept wanting to put the book down and run out ASAP and buy supplies. LOVE that. I want MORE! :)
Also love reading how the people survive, what the eat, how they do things...ect.

Tuck | 184 comments margaret atwood will tell you what to eat, and how to grow it on the roof too, when it's our time for "year of the flood"

The Year of the Flood

Megan (megan_sparks) | 2 comments Empty is very good and realistic, like it could really happen.

How I Live Now

The Enemy is just fun :)

The Children of Men

Into the Forest

Alas, Babylon is my absolute favorite.

Jasmine | 455 comments The Gone-Away World

there are "sort of zombies" but mostly it's about WMDs destroying the planet.

The Wall at the Edge of the World
is a book I read probably in junior high so I can't make any judgments on goodness, but I really liked it then, it's like a back to nature thing

there is also an annotated list here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_...
but it's stupid long.

Aerin If you haven't already read Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents, those are some of my favorite apocalyptic novels. They're pretty current, realistic, and thought-provoking.

Drew | 2 comments Jim Crace's The Pesthouse is a little slower and more meditative than you might be looking for, but definitely still good. Fairly realistic, though it doesn't give too much insight into the original apocalyptic disaster.

If you are looking for the ultimate "field guide" with a bit of a fictional story surrounding it try Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse. Its only a 3 star book at best but it has some great ideas.

scherzo♫ (pjreads) | 36 comments The Postman The Postman by David Brin

The book is much better than the movie (although the movie has Kevin Costner).

Better but also much different. The beginning of the book and the movie are similar but they take different roads after that.

Just started reading 77 Days in September another book about an EMP attack on America. So far so good. I'll let you know.

TheMindsCollective (antoniafulica) | 7 comments A Canticle For Leibowitz was very good, it's some time after an event, and depicts how humanity has evolved

Sara (vivianstreet) | 19 comments I second The Gone-Away World. It's very good, though you won't really find out how the world ends until about halfway through.
