Option 1.) A genre I would choose for writing a novel would be fantasy, so I read The Various by Steve Augarde. This meets criteria J, being the first in a series.
Option 4.) The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope contains the word "gard" in the title, which I was unfamiliar with. It is an old word for castle, which was entirely accurate, for that was where the story was set. It meets criteria C, having won the Newbery Honor in 1975.
