Noah B (NoahB) | 15 comments Mine is Karl Ruger from the Pine Deep series by Jonathan Maberry, Next would be Randall Flagg from several of Kings novels, then I would go with Mason from Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim novels.

Felina Dolores Umbridge - I've never hated a character so much. Very well written.

I have to agree with Randall Flagg. Dude is just really scary.

message 3: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman | 8320 comments I would list Randall Flagg, Hannibal Lecter, Annie Wilkes from Misery and Pennywise The Clown from IT.

message 4: by Noah (new)

Noah B (NoahB) | 15 comments I wasn't sure if I should phrase my question most despised or favorite villain, it's really the same thing huh? Yeah Randall Flagg is intense. I haven't read Harry Potter, so I couldn't say one way or the other about Dolores. I guess I'll have to give in and read it some day soon. :)

How could I forget Pennywise? Great list!

Michael (mikedecshop) | 1479 comments Melanie Fuller from Carrion Comfort an evil bitch

message 7: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Melanie is one stone cold bitch, Michael.

Dolores Umbridge is offputting because she loves kittens and dresses all girly like my ex-boss who has some similar traits. It's very eerie to watch and think back on the years we spent together. *shudder*

Dan simmons is yet another author I have yet to read. I actually own a copy of Carrion comfort too. My list of "to read" is getting overwhelming! So many good books with awesome villains.

I don't find her really scary as just a completely horrible human being. I disliked her more than Voldy. At least with him you knew his motives. Dolores is just an evil bitch.

message 10: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Bailey (jsbailey) Mrs. Danvers from Rebecca is rather intimidating.

Oh wait, that isn't horror. Oh well!

message 11: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments We know Dolores' motives: to make fellow human beings miserable. That's pretty scary to me.

message 12: by Noah (new)

Noah B (NoahB) | 15 comments I thought of another really evil character Bub from J.A. Konrath's Origin.

message 13: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Bub is a great character. Loved that book--lotsa fun.

Me too. It's one of those books that keeps you guessing all the way through.

message 15: by Roxanne (new)

Roxanne | 2 comments the bad twin in The Other by Thomas Tryon pure evil

message 16: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 1416 comments Randall Flagg definitely is a favorite. Have a sort of love/hate relationship with him. Reading It right now, and It is pretty good bad guy too.

message 17: by Chris (new)

Chris (necaros) | 18 comments Fun fact: My Grandmother gave me the middle name Dorian after Dorian Grey. When I got old enough to understand what type of character I had been named after I was a little surprised.

Noah B (NoahB) | 15 comments Chris wrote: "Fun fact: My Grandmother gave me the middle name Dorian after Dorian Grey. When I got old enough to understand what type of character I had been named after I was a little surprised."

Maybe she wants you to be forever young and enjoy lifes vices? Lol That's awesome! btw

message 19: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments I agree. Dorian's a cool name anyway, but even more so when you find out the namesake.

message 20: by Chris (new)

Chris (necaros) | 18 comments Thanks, I actually do look younger than I am. I usually jokingly tell people that it was due to my Grandmother casting a spell on me. It was just weird finding out I was named after a villain.

message 21: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Better than having Neo Nazi parents who name you Adolf.

A family friend who was raised in a Morman household decided to rebel and named her first child Damien.

Anyway to answer the question, Pennywise.

Traci Roxanne wrote: "the bad twin in The Other by Thomas Tryon pure evil"

Oh! Just saw this.

message 25: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 23 comments Gotta concur with those who said Randall Flagg and Pennywise. I'll also add Colonel Macklin from Swan Song and (even though it's not horror) General Woundwort from Watership Down (that is one eeevil rabbit).

Norman Daniels from Rose Madder is possibly the scariest baddie I've personally encountered in literature. The parts of the book that were told from his pov gave me some serious anxiety, and I had an overwhelming sense of dread the entire way through the book.

message 26: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn Henderson (kaitlynhenderson) | 54 comments If I had to choose, Hannibal Lecter handsdown. So witty and cunning. I even began to like him and thought he was pretty cool... I had to remind myself he was the "bad" guy.

message 27: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Augh, I hated General Woundwort when I read WD in high school. I hate that snake in Riki Tiki Tavi, too. I was scared to death of him when I was a kid.

message 28: by Jack (new)

Jack Wallen (jack_wallen) | 25 comments Pinhead from The Hellbound Heart or Candyman. I'm partial to Clive Barker. Both bad guys speak so eloquently.

message 29: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) The beast from "Watchers" Koontz.

message 30: by MountainAshleah (new)

MountainAshleah (mountainshelby) Not in the Horror Genre, but horrible nonetheless--Anton Chigurh (No Country for Old Men) or The Judge (Blood Meridian). Both are so chilling. Mrs Danvers (Rebecca) is my all-time favorite villainess.I have always wondered about the identity of Mr Danvers . . .

message 31: by Phil (new)

Phil Tucker Favorite villain: Ok, I'm going to have to go with two. Both are equally horrific. The first is Judge Holden from BLOOD MERIDIAN, a man of surpassing intellect, physical power, and resourcefulness who gives himself over wholly to war, corruption, death, and tempting men to give into their darkest urges.

The second is William Gull from Alan Moore's FROM HELL. Equally brilliant, deranged, and methodical in his Jack the Ripper killings.

Why them? There is something about a truly brilliant and powerful man giving himself to darkness that just chills me to the bone :)

message 32: by MJ (new)

MJ (zombette) | 545 comments I looooooooove villians! More so in movies than in books and I LOOOOOVE the Pine Deep Trilogy!

My favorite villian is The Devil, Satan, Lucifer, whatever you call him. He is the reason for all evil anyway, so in a way he is THE villian!

message 33: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments So true, Zombette!

Cliff's Dark Gems | 5 comments Just recently read Joe Hill's Heart shaped box. Craddock is very creepy. Also Flagg, Pennywise and Hannibal.

AMEN, Zombette!!!

message 36: by Jesse (new)

Jesse Obviously Randall Flagg. Pennywise. Annie Wilkes. The aunt in Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door, of course. Mr. Cooger and Mr. Dark from Something Wicked This Way Comes. Popalong Cassidy from Joe Lansdale's wonderful Drive-in 2. And every large corporation ever featured in a Bentley Little novel.

message 37: by Bozz (new)

Bozz | 25 comments Freddy Kruger. No one can top him.

message 38: by Pickle (new)

Pickle | 51 comments I thought Jim Rennie from Under the Dome was a very believable villain.

message 39: by Bozz (new)

Bozz | 25 comments He was awful, a really, really nasty guy. Good choice. I've just re-read the title of this topic. Sorry, it's book villains aint it? Well for me it would have to be.....the main bad guy from the Dead Zone, he was a real bad guy.

message 40: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Galstere (ThenewAmericanPsycho) | 219 comments The little kids from "Let's Go Play at the Adam's"

message 41: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Good call, Bryan. I didn't even think of them. They suck!

I'm currently listening to Under the Dome. How come Jim Rennie speaks with a southern accent? I'm disturbed that his last name is Rennie because that's actually my nickname my family has called me all my life. Don't ask me why--they don't know.

The bad guy in Dead Zone's just your average politician.

message 42: by Gatorman (new)

Gatorman | 8320 comments Good question, since it takes place in Maine.

The bad guy in Dead Zone had aspirations for the White House which makes him deadlier. And he grabbed a kid as a shield to keep from getting shot. Not sure your average politician, as slimy as they can be, would do that.

message 43: by Bozz (new)

Bozz | 25 comments He kicked a dog to death aswell. :(

Alana ~ The Book Pimp (loonyalana) Satan, Count Dracula and Randall Flagg....

and Umbridge didn't scare me as much as just tick me off. That was one messed up lady, had she been a real person, and I ran into her there would be a huge catfight. Epic catfight. Hair would be flying, nails breaking- I HATED her character, absolutely loathed it

message 45: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 139 comments I have to agree with several that have already been named here and some I would like to add:

Dracula
Randall Flagg
Pennywise the Clown
Hannibal Lecter
Edgler Foreman Vess (Intensity by Dean Koontz)
The Overlook Hotel (The Shining by Stephen King)
Captain Howdy (The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty)

Wendy Barlow | -46 comments Patrick Bateman in American Psycho is a nasty piece of work. The torture scenes still haunt me.
