A kid moves into an area - I can't recall if he's visiting over the summer or not. He meets another boy who turns out to be a ghost. The ghost can't move on because he was murdered before he could deliver some money. I think he'd gone to town & on the way back was afraid someone would steal it so he hid it. He was murdered & dumped in the river.
The kid tries to solve the puzzle. I think the ghosts embittered old brother is still living - embittered because the money wasn't delivered, I guess. The money should have been in their secret stash, at the foot of a tree along the road. Anyway, it turns out the ghost kid got mixed up between right & left & had actually buried the money but under the left tree rather than the right or something.
So, the money is found, the ghost goes to heaven & the embittered old man is happy again. Happy ending. Anyone else recall the title or who wrote the story?

Just did a quick web search... Is it possibly Spider World by Colin Wilson?
Spider World: The Tower
Spider World: The Delta

The one I'm thinking of had younger kids, 10 or 12 maybe. No coal mine. I'll do some searching today. It's starting to really bug me. (Yes, it's weird, but I get used to that in me...)

I'm glad the topic is one that others like the idea of.

Colin Wilson's books are the only ones I could find that looked like they'd fit the bill. Stan Lee also wrote one about his Loser's, but the Alien Factor is just one alien ship crashing in France.

Thank you for the help, but I'd managed to forget about this, so curse you for reminding me!

"This is definitely "The Ghost of Dibble Hollow" by May Nickerson Wallace (1965), one of my favorites!

Pug Allen and his family move into the home of his grandfather Nathaniel Dibble and he meets the ghost of young Miles Dibble. Miles wants Pug to help him find the money he buried on the night he died. The missing money caused a feud between the Dibbles and the Smiths because Miles and Eb Smith were carrying the two families' money home from the county fair and were followed by some thieves. The boys split up and Miles buried the money beneath a tree. He was crossing a bridge and slipped, hitting his head on the rocks below. His body went with the river current and man in the next town found his body and buried him in his family's plot. The money was never found and the Smiths thought the Dibbles stole it. But Miles hid the money at the Smith farm, Twin Maples, and didn't know his left from his right.
Great book, but copies are a little pricey, starting at around $20."
Pretty amazing. I even recalled the cover correctly!
