Are you sure it was that picture exactly? The Longest Cave has a similar cover. It's also old enough and about two men traveling through a cave but not looking for treasure.

Do you remember anything at all about the genre of the book?

Is there an artist's signature anywhere on the painting, likely one of the lower corners (I can't tell from this small version, but maybe you have access to a larger file of it)?

Journey to the Centre of the Earth, by Jules Verne takes place almost entirely underground, i.e., in caves, and they were exploring, not searching for treasure, as I recall. I haven't seen a matching cover, but there are literally hundreds of editions.
