Remember the Choose Your Own Adventure books? Did you ever want to read one that was written for adults?

Well, I've just finished one; it's the first in an epic series, and it's called Heavy Metal Thunder. It takes place in an era when humans have pretty much given up on finding any meaning in life. When an imperialistic alien species attacks, humanity barely puts up any fight at all. The main character, however, is a "human fanatic" fighting in a last-ditch guerilla war against the invaders. He's not a superheroic badass, but he is determined and driven and more than a little unbalanced.

Be warned: There are a few graphic action sequences!

Okay, that sounds awesome! But I am 12, would it be at all appropriate for me? I can take moderate cussing, but any sex and I won't read it.

Oh man, tough call! There's no sex, but as for the violence... expect an R rating!

I wouldn't worry too much: Nothing happens in Heavy Metal Thunder that wouldn't happen in any action movie...

And exactly what does that exclude?

Ha, good point Hugh! I guess what I mean is that it's one of those deals where books get away with a little bit more than movies do (sometimes). I remember reading stuff when I was younger that was waaaaay more graphic than any movie but, strangely enough, my parents were much more likely to prevent me from watching certain movies rather than certain books.

With Heavy Metal Thunder, the protagonist is fighting to survive in a war that's raging all across our solar system. He's a fighter, so there's plenty of violence. He doesn't have a lot of time for lovin', so it's not like there's any hardcore sex scenes that come out of nowhere. There's a little bit of cursing, but nothing like what you'd encounter in your average episode of South Park.
