Crusader (crusaderza) | 80 comments Has anyone read Mark Lawrence's Prince of Thorns? I finished it a couple of days ago and loved it. It's very dark, but a thoroughly entertaining read. It's almost like The Left Hand of God, but much better and without the religious undertones.

My Prince of Thorns review is up on my blog for those interested. Highly recommended if you are looking for something different in the fantasy genre.

Contrarius Sure, it's a very striking book. And Mark is a nice guy. He frequents some of the book-related forums like sffworld and the westeros board.

My review of the book is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/....

Tad (tottman) | 159 comments I really enjoyed it. Mark's doing a Q&A with the author in October for the Fantasy Book Club as they are reading the book that month.

T. Frohock (teresafrohock) I'm reading it now and I'm enjoying it. It doesn't seem that dark to me, so I'm wondering why so many people have their shorts in an uproar over it. Mark is an excellent storyteller and writer. I'm glad to see other people like it too.

Crusader (crusaderza) | 80 comments It's definitely not extremely dark, but still. I think the reason it's so striking is that it's written in the first person giving a much more intimate view into Jorg.

T. Frohock (teresafrohock) To be honest, I think it's an interesting way to view the character, because I find Jorg a little sad. I think without that intimate view, he could come across as cardboard but by being able to see his thoughts and how he perceives the world, I can feel bad for the emptiness he's cultivated within himself to survive.

I'm really glad there were so many conflicting reviews about it--it made me want to read it and decide for myself. Thanks for the thread!

Jensownzoo | 200 comments It's on my list, but I doubt I'll get to it soon. My TBR is just too large at this point!

message 9: by T. (new)

T. Frohock (teresafrohock) I definitely know how that is. ;-) I mentioned on one of the other discussions that I'm such a slow reader (due to a lot of other obligations) that it just feels like it takes me forever to get through my TBR list.

message 10: by Jensownzoo (new)

Jensownzoo | 200 comments I'm a fast reader, I just add too many books! The only way my TBR list will decrease is if someone locks me in a room with all my books and doesn't allow outside contact (shoving food under the door, etc.). Even then, it would take years.

T. Frohock (teresafrohock) This is one I popped to the head of my to-list, and I'm glad I did. I loved it. I posted my review here.
