message 1: by Becca (new)

Becca (beccahal) I am really loving the Dystopian genre. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I've read: Hunger Games, Divergent, Matched, Possession and I'm sure there are others, but can you recommend any to me?

Thanks!

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness is a MUST read.
Ship Breaker (Ship Breaker, #1) by Paolo Bacigalupi is good.
Uglies (Uglies, #1) by Scott Westerfeld is early dystopian (not as good as Hunger Games but it came before HG)
Unwind (Unwind, #1) by Neal Shusterman

I read an ARC of The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe which isn't out yet but I really liked it.

Julie I second Ship Breaker (Ship Breaker, #1) by Paolo Bacigalupi also, Wither (The Chemical Garden, #1) by Lauren DeStefano and Blood Red Road (Dustlands, #1) by Moira Young Blood Red Road is more of a Post Apocalyptic.

I third it!

Heidi Shipbreakers, Unwind, and Blood Red Road (all mentioned above) are all solid dystopian books. Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1) by Susan Beth Pfeffer was also ok. The only two series I love in this genre was Hunger Games and Chaos Walking (Knife of Never Letting Go). Not much has held up to them yet IMO.

Cindy (eclecticfirefly) (eclecticfirefly) | 44 comments Unwind was the kind of book that sticks with you, even months later. Very intense. LOVED it!

Some others: Birthmarked (Birthmarked, #1) by Caragh M. O'Brien and Rot & Ruin (Benny Imura, #1) by Jonathan Maberry

Bridget (mahvelousmeat) | 24 comments Memento Nora by Angie Smibert The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer The Giver (The Giver, #1) by Lois Lowry Lord of the Flies by William Golding

The Giver and Lord of the Flies are not explicitly YA, but I read The Giver in middle school and Lord of the Flies in high school, so I figured they would count. I also didn't care for either of them but I have many friends who loved both (and they're both staples of the genre) so I figured I'd include them.

For non-YA recs, I'd check out William Gibson. I loved Pattern Recognition and he's considered to be one of the top dogs in the cyberpunk genre (which I would consider to be a subset of the dystopian genre.)

Candor by Pam Bachorz isn't strictly dystopian, but it has many of those elements. Same with Gone by Michael Grant.
