~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments I haven't increased my miniscule music collection for ages. I have a few things on my "to get" list:

The Velvet Underground & Nico
Land (Patti Smith)
Horses (Patti Smith)
Black Holes and Revelations (Muse)

But there's so much out there, both old and new I just don't know where to start. Give me suggestions people! What should I listen to? I'm sure I could cull plenty from the "top fives" and "top tens," but I want to know what you're spinning lately and what's worth checking out.

message 2: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Janine knows everything there is to know about contemporary music.

message 3: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments Lol. I thought St. Anger would be the last Metallica abomination to roam the earth.

message 4: by Michael (new)

Michael You want new music or old music? I'm not too up on new music but I was recently turned onto Zac Brown Band and would recommend anything by him.

Otherwise...
Blood on the Tracks & Blonde on Blonde - Bob Dylan

Born to Run & Greetings from Asbury Park - Bruce Springsteen

It's Too Late to Stop Now - Van Morrison

Get Your Ya-Yas Out - Rolling Stones

And because I just listened to it: They Only Come Out at Night - Edgar Winter Group

The list could really go on for a long time.

message 5: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments Love Dylan, and most of my albums have gone missing so that's a gap I definitely need to fill Michael.

I also want to get the Rolling Stones album that has Paint it Black. I don't remember which one it was off the top of my head.

message 6: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments If you're looking for Horses, do you have Easter? I like Easter by Patti Smith at least as much as Horses. If you like Muse, try the first Starsailor album, Love is Here.

message 7: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments Actually, I don't own any of Patti's stuff. I listen to her online and via friends' ipods, so I figure the albums I listed are a good place to start. I hope to get all of her stuff eventually, so I will boot Easter up to the top of my list.

If you want to continue on with your stoned and hygenically-questionable 70's New York motif, like the first three you listed here, why not try:

The New York Dolls
The Dictators
Television
Richard Hell & The Voidoids
Jim Carroll Band

message 9: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments Love the New York Dolls and The Dictators. Haven't heard of the others, so definitely worth looking into. And my odd list mostly emerged from a collision of YouTube videos, Just Kids and a long-standing obsession with Andy Warhol. Thankfully, it's not the only stuff I listen to, just a sub-genre that is underrepresented in my play lists.

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Amber, if you need a mix CD, there are always people around here who are willing to reach out in your hour of need.

message 11: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments Holy crap, that would be awesome Barb. I haven't had a chance to participate in shebangs yet and my music collection is very small and sad right now.

message 14: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments Thanks Janine, I will. Also, I own every album the Eels have ever made. They're awesome.

Nope, still in the same place Barb.

Félix (habitseven) Roky.

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Since Clark mentioned mid-70s New York scene music, I thought I'd through in some favorites from the UK, same time period, in case you don't own any of these.

Elvis Costello and the Attractions, My Aim is True and This Year's Model.
Joe Jackson, Look Sharp! and I'm the Man
Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Sex & Drugs & Rock n' Roll

By the way, there are several albums on this list I own (not surprising at all), and I'd be happy to burn you a CD or 2 with all those albums in MP3 format. Let me know.

Gus, you are the man!

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

On occasion, Clark, on occasion. I only brought those up because those 3 acts seem to be on my heavy rotation lately, so they're ripe for recommendation. Plus, that Ian Dury biopic, starring Andy Serkis, is on cable these days, but I haven't gotten around to watching it. I hear Serkis does a phenomenal Ian Dury impersonation.

message 19: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I just discovered that I have had two unused iTunes gift cards stuck away in a drawer for probably two years. And they are still good! This mean my iTunes account has a $30 credit that really wants to be spent.

Suggestions, anyone? Janine? Anyone?

message 20: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments See post #17. What do you generally listen to?

message 21: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) I like all kinds. I'll go through 17 first. Thanks!

message 22: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Which other Eels songs do you like? I bought the Beach House album (Teen Dream) and the Vashti Bunyan album.

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments Larry wrote: "Which other Eels songs do you like? I bought the Beach House album (Teen Dream) and the Vashti Bunyan album."

"Novacaine for the Soul"
"Susan's House"
"Beautiful Freak"
"Hey Man (Now You're Really Livin')"
"It's a Motherfucker"
"I Like Birds"

message 24: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Thanks, Amber!

message 25: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments Daisies of the Galaxy is my favourite Eels album. From that one I like (apart from the songs already mentioned by Amber) 'Flyswatter', 'Mr. E's beautiful blues' and 'Jeannie's diary'. From other albums: 'Your lucky day in hell', 'That look you give that guy', 'Saturday morning', 'Dog faced boy', 'Woman driving, man sleeping', 'Bus stop boxer', 'Eyes down' (from the Holes soundtrack) and 'Baby loves me'. And everything Amber mentioned. That should be enough for now :)

message 26: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Yes! Great. Thanks!

message 30: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments Geez Cynthia, Not long ago I purchased Build me up Buttercup, and High Tide or Low Tide, but my version was by Ben Harper and Jack Johnson.

I love bacon too!

message 38: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) You put batteries in your bacon?

I'm going to hijack this thread. None of you will be released until you tell me what to read with these kids. I want short stories, short, gripping paperbacks.

Most of all I want graphic novel suggestions.

Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic is a really good graphic novel. Although depending on your school district, it might be a banned book.

Yeah, I don't see that going over too well here. One of my favorite books ever, though, Lg. I wrote it into my Master's project.

message 48: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments As for short stories and short paperbacks, how old are these kids again?

message 49: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman is a classic graphic novel. Sad (what book about the holocaust isn't?) but so very good. And I agree with Pi on Stitches and Persepolis as really good too, although Stitches may be a bit much for anyone under 13.

Yay! I forgot where I had hijacked!
Charly, I had thought about O Henry earlier in the semester, great suggestion. And yes yes yes, The Arrival! Perfect! I think Maids will be great with my 7 th graders.

I have all grades, seventh to seniors.
