Lori Strongin | 26 comments Thanks so much for posting this link, Elle! I'm working on a presentation for the RT conference next year about building your own blog tour and this link definitely has some great talking points I could cover.

Thanks again!

Robert Boyle (urgus) | 8 comments That's a good article, Elle. I sort of followed these principles recently when I gave a presentation on ePublishing to a sci-fi club. (A nice crowd of friendly eccentrics). Naturally, I started by saying I'd been through the ePub process myself, but I talked about the processes, not my book. About 10 minutes into the presentation, one chap held up his iPad and called out; "This is his book, folks!' He'd bought it on the spot. Gosh, it gave me a buzz - and helped with the presentation.

Gary Goldstein | 473 comments That is a very interesting article!
For me, personally, aside from promoting my book, "Jew in Jail," here on Goodreads, I find it extremely important to do so by getting interviews on blogs, newspapers, televison, radio, etc.
Speaking of which, here are the two latest interviews for my book. I also have a radio interview scheduled for Monday night too! It's ALL about hard work and perseverance!

Robert Boyle (urgus) | 8 comments (I hope I'm not too far from the theme of this thread, but I've put this here to address a problem arising after the 'promotion'.)

Would I be right in thinking the most exasperating aspect of selling your ebook is the number of people who do not follow through in their commitment to buy it? With family and friends, the surprise and interest at what you’ve done is not feigned...well, it doesn’t appear to be. Their determination to buy your book is clear and heartening.

And that’s it. Nothing happens.

I think one of the reasons is they baulk at the actual process of buying, then downloading, the file. While generally IT literate, they have not previously bought ebooks. Some express surprise when told they can read the book on their PC or tablet: ‘I thought you needed a proper reader!’

In the light of this, Cath, my wife, who leaves me way behind in these things, set out a simple ‘How to download’ instruction sheet to accompany the advertising flyer that we’ve distributed to anyone who can’t avoid us.

Feel free to use these instructions, although you may wish to replace the name of my novel with your own...

It’s on the FB page for the novel and here is the link:-

Nell Grey (nellgrey) | 59 comments Thanks for the article, Elle - good common sense and very readable too. I enjoyed the others linked on the page as well, especially the 'Stigma' piece. You hit the nail right on the head. Ironically, I believe it was an anti pay-to-publish campaigner who first coined the phrase 'vanity publishing' and created the stigma. The spotlight he turned on the process - whether of self-publishing or using a 'vanity press' - was invaluable in alerting would-be authors to the sharks out there in the publishing world, but the use of the 'v' word has had the effect of branding self-publishers as deluded wanabees.
