Jasmine | 455 comments I think that we should have a group vs. goodreads contest. people who've read books from a thread here should read books goodreads recommends based on the books/authors and see if the group is better

that would be wonderful. i made one request from goodreads.com, and no one ever responded, so so far, this group is winning.

message 3: by Tuck (new)

Tuck | 184 comments where do you find the GR recommends at? oops, i found it. man, they even recommended stuff to me from my "Couldn't finish the book because it was crappy" shelf. hah. i will look into jasmine's suggestion, sounds interesting

yeah, we should do this. i love the idea, bit going by people's shelf names is tricky. i would love to start a discussion here.

right I mean I don't want to read books because they are japanese, it only works with my british and american shelves currently.

i am still excited about this recommendation thing, if it can actually work, you know? i think part of the problem is that it doesn't factor in when someone read and rated a book. i mean, how could it? but i think i would be less likely to give 5 stars to the little gymnast if i read it now, than as a memory of it having been one of my favorite middle-reader books.

and it definitely has comical responses to bookshelves with less straightforward names like "history." i went to see the recommendations it gave for my "my biggest fear" shelf, which is of course for books about twins. but the algorithm couldn't figure that out, obviously.

i was pretty disappointed with their take on my byron shelf. only one or two were actually about byron, and i already own them both.

message 9: by Rhiannon (new)

Rhiannon (hellomynameisbook) | 33 comments The recs for some of my bookshelves are so off the mark - they'll never get THOSE right. My "brrr" shelf has books taking place in cold climates. Forget it! The goodreads recs are way off the mark. The Portable Beat Reader?

My "Yr-Family-Is-Fcked" shelf, which should be self-explanatory to human-beings (your family is f*cked, book character!), is another shelf that this service will never "get." Meet Kirsten: An American Girl. I can't imagine her family if f*cked.

hahahh that one is the best!! poor poor kirsten!!

message 11: by Rhiannon (new)

Rhiannon (hellomynameisbook) | 33 comments Meanwhile, I have found some good recs on Karen's "Shh-Family-Secrets" shelf. They fit into my "Yr-Family-Is-Fcked" shelf nicely...

message 12: by Rhiannon (new)

Rhiannon (hellomynameisbook) | 33 comments This one is kind of funny... My "ladywriter" shelf has just one criteria(um?). (I bet you can guess what it is!) It has 23 recs by male authors.

message 14: by ivana18 (last edited Sep 22, 2011 02:18PM) (new)

ivana18 | 16 comments That goodreads thingy keeps recommending me books based on books I deleted from my shelves (I deleted them because I didn't like them so I didn't finish them)....but for some reason that computer thingy remembers those books, and keeps recommending me stuff based on nonexistent stuff I used to have. Isn't the artificial intelligence supposed to be "superior" to us poor humans?

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the thingy, the thingy can be helpful, but this is more fun.

message 15: by Mir (new)

Mir | 191 comments I have very straightforward shelf names, but it basically just recommended the most popular works in those genres to me, which is useless because of course I've heard of those books and chosen to not read them.

Eg, fantasy = Game of Thrones, Name of the Wind; mystery = Mistress of the Art of Death, etc.

message 16: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine | 455 comments so I just looked at what goodreads had listed as my favorite genres:

christian and young adult were included...

contemporary and crime were not...

it's like goodreads hasn't even met me.

message 17: by Greg (new)

Greg | 117 comments I just looked at this for the first time, from my DFW-Inspired shelf goodreads thought to recommend me a Richard Perez novel. I hate that tool.

hahahaahahaahha of all people!! i love that!

message 19: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 126 comments For awhile my favorites shelf was spawning a bunch of childrens books recommendations. I have my childhood favorites on a different shelf entirely. I'm still trying to figure out why it thought I would like Make Way for Ducklings based on a shelf full of Kundera, Tolstoy, Tim O'Brien, etc. Then again, I do love that book...

Does it keep recommending different editions of books you've already read to anyone else?

message 20: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine | 455 comments because make way for ducklings is the shit and anybody who doesn't like it should die.

but for serious, it keeps recommending me kids books too, something about grasshoppers by the Caterpillar guy.

message 21: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 126 comments I fully agree with your first statement. They should die.

Apparently my library sciences shelf screams PNR

message 22: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine | 455 comments take as needed?

from what i have seen in library school, that is all any of them read, so it might be more accurate than you know!! but i do not want to give the computer that much credit.

message 25: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine | 455 comments um, what's pnr.

I was joking around, it's what they call tylenol at my job which means "take as needed"

message 26: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 126 comments Oh, paranormal romance

Karen, do you really mean to tell me I'm still going to be the odd one out once I manage to find a way to afford library school?

message 27: by karen, future RA queen (new)

karen (karenbrissette) | 1315 comments Mod
welllll, as long as you read a healthy dose of YA, you should be okay. when i was reading proust, i got a lot of suspicious looks...

message 28: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 126 comments So I should get Joyce and his ilk out of the way now?

message 29: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine | 455 comments I love joyce. *cuddles with ulysses*

message 30: by karen, future RA queen (new)

karen (karenbrissette) | 1315 comments Mod
yeah, unless you want people to think you are a booksnob! get started on those shapeshifter romances!

message 32: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 126 comments Well, I have Finnegan's Wake on deck next month and I just finished Gravity's Rainbow. Granted, I also have a thing for Regency romances, am reading my way through Harry Potter, and have recently been lured into a paranormal romance series centered around a half-human, half-vampire redhead.

message 33: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 126 comments Oh, and Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein

ah. I have read the first chapter of that book 15 times, we're still dating :P

message 35: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 126 comments It's a challenge, so that gives me incentive. If I read the entire book in the month of November, a friend will watch The Room. It's the first Joyce I'll be reading too. Hooray for the deep end.

message 36: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine | 455 comments is that a movie of the donoghue book?

message 37: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 126 comments Oh no. I mean this. It's apparently nigh unwatchable. I've actually agreed to watch it with her. There will be large quantities of booze involved. I've not seen any of it. She's seen part of it and refused to watch further. Hence something like Finnegan's Wake being required in exchange.

message 39: by Meredith (last edited Oct 12, 2011 06:35PM) (new)

Meredith Holley (meredithholley) | 194 comments The Room! The classic work with the passion of Tennessee Williams! "You. are. tearing me apaaaat stella lisa!"

This movie needs to be shown in theaters more often.

Err, or he pays them? There are billboards for it all over the city. The Room and Angelyne. Sometimes I miss living there.

message 43: by Meredith (new)

Meredith Holley (meredithholley) | 194 comments Yeah, either way. He has a message that must be laughed at.

message 44: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 126 comments Come December I will have this experience.

I will not be sober either during or after.

message 45: by Meredith (new)

Meredith Holley (meredithholley) | 194 comments Nor should you be.

message 46: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 126 comments I've been told that both sobriety and drinking games are to be avoided with this thankfully unique work.

message 47: by Greg (new)

Greg | 117 comments None of the books recommended to me from my Foxes shelf had a single fox on the cover of them. Stupid goodreads program.

i have not had a chance to see of the recommendations feature has gotten better. has anyone else?

message 50: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 126 comments I've not look in a few weeks. It was slightly less insane, but still getting some bizarre recommendations at that point.
