Autumn 2011

So did I!! I'll let you know!

Just imagine you're 9 when you're listening :)

I'm looking forward to hearing what you think , it's on my library list too

Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear
Nice first in a series. Rita Barrington is easily listened to.
Started

The Danger by Dick Francis
I really like Tony Britton.

Oh my goodness. Unless they pop up on a sale I will be reading them. So I guess it will be her voice I will hear in my mind.

I find that I rarely enjoy the books that make those kinds of lists.

I gave up after the 2nd CD on that audiobook.

Now, I'm listening to To Kill a Mockingbird. I never read that one.
Next up is The Son of Neptune. It was just released today.

Thanks for mentioning this. I heard about it on the Books on the Nightstand podcast (they also have a group here on goodreads), but forgot. Just checked and my library owns it so it's now on reserve for me.

I really liked both of those. And I'd read bad reviews on Kim Hicks who does the 2nd in Maisie Dobbs, so I was dreading it, but ended up pleasantly surprised, as I thought she was just as good as Rita.

Thanks for this, I have to get on Audible and buy Son of Neptune!

I've forgotten who is narrating but she is very good.

The narrator for that one was very good. I like the book overall, but I mostly like the mother's whole story more than the daughters stories.

I read this as an audiobook, beautifully narrated by Steven Crossley. He switches between the English and Irish accents without a hitch. I love the city of Dublin and it is almost another character in this book. However, I didn't like the story itself as much as I thought I would. I frequently didn't believe the plot and I don't want to include spoilers so I won't go any farther than that. After a very long, sometimes tedious, midsection, French did provide an ending that tied up the loose threads and satisfied me.
Just started The Charming Quirks of Others by Alexander McCall Smith. It's the 7th in the Sunday Philosophy Club series. I've liked all of the previous ones, but this is starting a little slow. Davina Porter's narration is excellent, as usual.

I hope you enjoy it Susie -..."
Just heard from the author of this Lottie Albright series, the next one, called Hidden Heritage will be published September 2012.

Thanks Karen I will keep my eye out for that one!

Come Spring by Charlotte Hinger
as a Reader's Digest Condensed

I think I will read this one (even tho 1986 and co-written)to get a feel for her first book in print. I will then move on to the 2011 offerings.

Witches of East End by Melissa de la Cruz. Over all I enjoyed this book. 3*
The Mill River Recluse by Darcie Chan. I really enjoyed this book. 4*
Wake by Lisa McMann. I enjoyed YA book. 3*
Manhunt by Janet Evanovich. Another fun book, 4*
The Disappeared by Kim Echlin. I loved this book, what a story. 5*
I currently listen to Summer Rental by Mary Kay Andrews

Michael, did you listen to The Likenessor read it? I read In the Woodsand while it was a little hard to read - I enjoyed it, but can't decide which route to take for the next book. Your thoughts???

It's read by Jim Dale, and I'm really loving it. Anyone else listening to this one?

Been trying to decide whether I should use my credit for this one. :)

Yes I'm halway done with it too I'm enjoying it and just love jim Dale!

Angie - you got farther along that I did. I've started three times and drifted away each time. Not sure why but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll just keep passing it on by. I heard an interview with the author and I REALLY wanted to experience it. But life is short and there are so many books.....

Maggie, it held me like glue. Fascinating storyline.

The Dark Horse by Craig Johnson
George Guidall seems perfect for this one."
Oh George IS Walt Whitmire! I love this series. I don't know how long Walt can hold out physically - he gets hurt in every book and he is no spring chicken.

It sure is good.

Thanks for the tip. Increasingly I don't want to have to stretch too much to accept unlikely plot lines. A little is OK...it is fiction after all but sometimes I think an author gets a little lazy and thinks "oh I'll just have the reader REALLY suspend disbelief so I can get this book done." Probably not very fair of me.

I was half way through The Age of Wonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science by Richard Holmes and will pick it back up tomorrow. It's also very good for anyone interested in scientific history.

Today I started Never Knowing by Chevy Stevens

I think you will have to be a fan of YA fiction to enjoy this one. I found it was nothing like Still Missing.

I thought Age of Wonder sounded very good. I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

The added interview was insightful.

I'm about half way through it now. It's really great. I don't do nonfiction very often and I was a little afraid this might bore me, but I've learned so much already and I still have 10 hours left!
