I gave up after the 2nd CD on that audiobook.

message 111: by Lori (new)

Lori (twizzle777) | 191 comments Well, I've read a number of things since I last posted. Most recently, I listened to the Prince Roger series by John Ringo and David Weber. Love that series. Then, I listened to Skulduggery Pleasant: Dark Days and Skulduggery Pleasant: Mortal Coil by Derek Landy. They are getting much darker, but I do enjoy them.

Now, I'm listening to To Kill a Mockingbird. I never read that one.

Next up is The Son of Neptune. It was just released today.

message 112: by Barbara (last edited Oct 04, 2011 07:33PM) (new)

Barbara Now on to The Night Circusby, Erin Morgenstern narrated by, Jim Dale he's the reason I got this one on audio instead of paper book!

Thanks for mentioning this. I heard about it on the Books on the Nightstand podcast (they also have a group here on goodreads), but forgot. Just checked and my library owns it so it's now on reserve for me.

I really liked both of those. And I'd read bad reviews on Kim Hicks who does the 2nd in Maisie Dobbs, so I was dreading it, but ended up pleasantly surprised, as I thought she was just as good as Rita.

I've forgotten who is narrating but she is very good.

The narrator for that one was very good. I like the book overall, but I mostly like the mother's whole story more than the daughters stories.

message 117: by Barbara (new)

Barbara I finished In the Woods by Tana French. My goodreads review is:
I read this as an audiobook, beautifully narrated by Steven Crossley. He switches between the English and Irish accents without a hitch. I love the city of Dublin and it is almost another character in this book. However, I didn't like the story itself as much as I thought I would. I frequently didn't believe the plot and I don't want to include spoilers so I won't go any farther than that. After a very long, sometimes tedious, midsection, French did provide an ending that tied up the loose threads and satisfied me.

Just started The Charming Quirks of Others by Alexander McCall Smith. It's the 7th in the Sunday Philosophy Club series. I've liked all of the previous ones, but this is starting a little slow. Davina Porter's narration is excellent, as usual.

message 118: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 1546 comments I am listening to Ready Player One Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and There Goes the Bride There Goes the Bride (Agatha Raisin, #20) by M.C. Beaton . This is the first Agatha book I have listened to without Daniva Porter narrating and while her replacement is also great I miss Davina.

Charlotte Hinger

message 120: by John, Moderator (new)

John | 3920 comments I finished Lethal Lineage yesterday, and while I had some issues with the plot, Hinger does do setting quite well, and the narration was good. I'd listen to the next one, though I hope the mystery angle isn't quite as ... convoluted.

Angie - you got farther along that I did. I've started three times and drifted away each time. Not sure why but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll just keep passing it on by. I heard an interview with the author and I REALLY wanted to experience it. But life is short and there are so many books.....

Thanks for the tip. Increasingly I don't want to have to stretch too much to accept unlikely plot lines. A little is OK...it is fiction after all but sometimes I think an author gets a little lazy and thinks "oh I'll just have the reader REALLY suspend disbelief so I can get this book done." Probably not very fair of me.

message 137: by Laura (new)

Laura (thatlibrarianlady) Finished The Night Circus today. It was amazing.

I was half way through The Age of Wonder: How the Romantic Generation Discovered the Beauty and Terror of Science by Richard Holmes and will pick it back up tomorrow. It's also very good for anyone interested in scientific history.

I'm about half way through it now. It's really great. I don't do nonfiction very often and I was a little afraid this might bore me, but I've learned so much already and I still have 10 hours left!

message 145: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Michael, I was so surprised that I didn't like In the Woods more. I liked Faithful Place and most reviewers said that In the Woods was far better. I'm tempted by The Likeness because I liked the character of Cassie.

John | 3920 comments I am a couple of hours into Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer, which is interesting; my misgivings were misplaced. Speaking of misgivings, I'm reading this nearly back-to-back with Lethal Lineage, but am able to keep the "voices" separate even though Karen narrated both.
