How far are you into it? I got halfway and that's the farthest I've ever gotten into a book and seriously considered abandoning it. I have been forcing myself through the last of it. I have the last 10% to go. I think I'm just missing the point because frankly I have no idea what the book is about.

I am almost 2/3's of the way in. The language is beautiful and at times it has me laughing out loud. I do find I have to really pay attention and not let my mind wander. It is a bit of a work out to my brain. I am enjoying it overall.

Sarah | 662 comments I ran into Goodwill quickly on the way home looking to see if I could find a copy of The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides , no luck... But I did find all these other books I have really been wanting - East of Eden by John Steinbeck 2666 (Part 2 The Part About Amalfitano) by Roberto Bolaño True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey The Sound and the Fury The Corrected Text by William Faulkner Tracks by Louise Erdrich The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood and Oryx and Crake (MaddAddam Trilogy, #1) by Margaret Atwood all for a grand total of 24 bucks. What a steal and some of these are considered great books, I think some may be on the 1001 list of books to read before you die.

Gosh, I love Goodwill. Totally my favorite Atlanta "bookstore". The books here are only $1.50 paperback and $2.50 for hardcover. You picked up some great finds.

One of my favorite things to do is to go into used bookstores and just search for treasure. Sounds like you found a great selection. :)

dely | 368 comments After two weeks in which I hadn't time to pick up a book, I started Soltanto amore (Only Love) by Milena Milani. I don't know if it has been translated into English. She is an Italian artist/writer who has died one month ago; she has been very important in the artistic movement of Spatialism in Italy and has written also some books.

This one talks about Marcella, a 25 years old woman, divorced, artist but, above all, looking for love. It is a first narration and we go from the present to memories of the past. It isn't romance, on the contrary, there is a lot of sex but never vulgar because Marcella is able to love only giving herself completely to a man; it is also full of interesting insights. I am liking it so far and it is set where I live so I recognize the places!

message 634: by Susan (new)

Susan | 394 comments Right now, I am reading The Good Soldier Švejk The Good Soldier Svejk and His Fortunes in the World War by Jaroslav Hašek .
I had planned to read this for Austria and I think I will still do that.
But most of the book is set in the Czech Republic when it was part of Austria-Hungary.
I was intimidated by the 750+ pages at first, but then I saw it had these little drawings in it. It is pretty fun.

Sarah | 662 comments Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie. It is so beautifully written. I love it so far.

message 636: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Just finished Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity - it was a diffult subject (poverty in India) but really compelling as well. Currently reading The Headhunter's Daughter: A Mystery for Congo. So far, so good!

I read it a few months ago (in the original French). I liked it too. Ironically, the style reads like a translation from an American book. I guess that was the point but it took me a while to get used to it.

Service! Ton français n'est pas mauvais :D

I have read that this book will be soon translated into English. If you don't find it in French you must only be patient and wait a little bit.

message 644: by Fiona (new)

Fiona I am reading By Hook or by Crook. A Journey in Search of English. It's as much about England and Wales, their history and eccentricity, as about the origins of English words, phrases and place names. Sometimes it's nice to travel closer to home!

Sarah | 662 comments Started The Gunslinger today. Now I begin my journey and commitment to complete The Dark Tower series - if I like it, of course.

message 646: by dely (new)

dely | 368 comments I gave it up with Three Lives by Gertrude Stein because it was really boring.

Started If on a Winter's Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino and I am liking it so far (read only for chapters).

message 647: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 662 comments I am reading A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry tonight. I am really falling in love with the book the more I read - I think it has to do with the character development in the context of the political/economic/religious struggles in India. The story unfolds into the complex human relationships as they struggle and live and suffer and love. It is really sad and beautiful and endearing and devastating and triumphant. I am also feeling very rewarded to learn and understand some of India's history.

Good stories, and good history.
