JenniferAustin (austinrh) I am currently reading The Enormous Room by E.E. Cummings. It is set in World War I France. It is dark but hilarious.

Oooh! I will look these up. I have been loving maritime books of late. I can recommend The Riddle of the Sands, Captains Courageous, North Star, and The Strode Venturer.

George P. | 116 comments Looks like I haven't posted to this thread for a year or two!
I'm reading five books right now, only one of them by a US or UK writer. The Bridge on the Drina by Ivo Andric of Bosnia, Owls Do Cry by Janet Frame of New Zealand, A Question of Power by Bessie Head of Botswana, The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga of India, and Being Mortal by Atul Gawande of the US (his parents were immigrants). I think only the Bosnian and Botswana books were translated.

message 1909: by Stacia (new)

Stacia | 37 comments This year, I've been sporadically making my way through The Argentina Reader: History, Culture, Politics.

In it, I read an excerpt of Martín Fierro, which led to me actually seeking out & reading the full version (still short) of The Gaucho Martín Fierro, mainly because I've been wanting to read The Adventures of China Iron (a feminist riff on Martín Fierro; also perfect for Women in Translation Month).

So, I'm now partway through China Iron.

Christine | 156 comments Suzan: Took me long enough! Just finished it this morning and will write a review later tonight. The author covers a huge span of history, but shallowly. The author’s love of the Andalusian region of Spain and its art, poetry, architecture history is clearly evident.

message 1950: by Melanie (new)

Melanie Anton | 17 comments Because of Dorothy Parker, I am reading The Last Romantic: A biography of Marie of Roumania by Hannah Pakula and it is fascinating.
