The Alienist

Only read the unabridged version. Characters are sometimes eliminated from the trimmed version, and therefore takes some of the quirkiness out of it. Recognizing known historical characters as you read is part of the fun of this book, afterall.

Caleb Carr

Karen | 42 comments There are several historical mystery series that I absolutely love: Lindsay Davis' Marcus Didius Falco in 75 AD Rome; Laura Joh Rowland's Ichiro Sano in 17th century shogunate Japan; Michael Jecks' 14th century mysteries, just to name a few of the best.

Lindsey Davis, Laura Joh Rowland and Michael Jecks all excellent choices for the Historical Mystery category.

The Silver Pigs is the first in the Marcus Didius Falco series.

The first in the Sano Ichiro series is Shinju.

For the 14th centuty try The Last Templar.
