message 151: by Valerie (last edited May 28, 2009 03:47AM) (new)

Valerie (veegood) | 85 comments Ok, I held back long enough.
It's from Whip Hand, it refers to the amount of lift one can get with a hot air balloon, and when Sid goes with John Viking on the balloon race they come down in the town of Eastbourne, 'scraped the eaves of grey slate roofs, made a sharp diagonal descent over a road and a patch of grass, and smashed down on a broad concrete walk twenty yards from the waves.'

Chris | 62 comments Well done, Valerie. Your turn

Chris

message 153: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (veegood) | 85 comments Darn it, my turn again! I had a big weekend, my son's 8th birthday, big party, made a really cool cake. Completely forgot about getting on here and leaving a clue.
I will be back within 5 hours to give a clue after I've done all my morning run around!

message 154: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (veegood) | 85 comments Ok, so it's been more like 6 hours...

All right, a nice easy one. How does one protect oneself from white-faced clowns, and in which book would you find the answer?

message 155: by Chris (new)

Chris | 62 comments Stand in a fountin as in "Reflex", because "they don't like water". (Sounds like schoolboys!)

message 156: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (veegood) | 85 comments ok, yes, it's stand in a fountain cos they don't like water, but it's not Reflex...

message 157: by Chris (new)

Chris | 62 comments Oops, Banker!

message 158: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (veegood) | 85 comments yes, Banker is correct. Your turn Chris!

message 161: by Chris (new)

Chris | 62 comments Sorry - tied up in alphabetti spaghetti!

Sardines; soup, anchovies and scrambled eggs.
Which book and given to whom?

message 162: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 181 comments Mod
Wow, I love your clue, Chris! I have an idea, but not a book title yet. I'll have to think about it some more.

message 163: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (veegood) | 85 comments I think I know. Does the semi colon separate the list? ie the sardines were given to one character and the rest to another?

message 164: by Chris (new)

Chris | 62 comments Yes

message 165: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 181 comments Mod
Ooh, thanks for the clue, Valerie. That cleared it up for me. :) I waited a day in case you were going to answer, but you haven't yet. So, the answer is......
Blood Sport! Lynnie cooks "soup, and anchovies on scrambled egg" for Gene Hawkings. Chrysalis (the horse) likes sardines, which is how Gene tells him apart from other horses.

My clue this time is a quote: "He hadn't asked why."
Which book and why is it significant?

message 167: by Chris (new)

Chris | 62 comments It's from"High Stakes" and Jody Leeds, trainer, hadn't askedwhy Steven was taking his horses away.

message 168: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 181 comments Mod
Chris, you are correct. AND with all the details!

Your turn again!

message 169: by Chris (new)

Chris | 62 comments A Great Dane and a "butterfly". which book? What were their significance?

message 170: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 181 comments Mod
No one wants to play? I love the visual of a large dog in a small car - Odin the Great Dane - from Slay-Ride! Slay-Ride isn't one of my top favorites, but that visual of the dog in the car is very memorable to me and always makes me chuckle.

I had to look up the "butterfly." The villain in Slay-Ride has a butterfly birthmark. Is there more to the significance of it? It's been a long time since I last read Slay-Ride.

message 171: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (veegood) | 85 comments hey guys, sorry I've been MIA for so long. Serious family health issues!

Yes, Slay-Ride isn't one of my favourites either, but I like it more now than I did when I first read it as a teenager. I did love Odin!

message 172: by Chris (new)

Chris | 62 comments Correct Luann, your turn. I hope that all is resolved at home, Valerie.
Kind regards

Luann (azbookgal) | 181 comments Mod
Welcome back, Valerie! I hope all the health issues have been resolved!

Since our last clue involved a dog, I thought I would continue the theme. Which book involves a dog whistle as an important part of the mystery?

message 174: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (veegood) | 85 comments Ahh, I know that one. The very first DF book I ever read. It's from 'For Kicks' and Daniel Roke realises that the whistle is used to make the horses run faster by association with the fear of fire. I read it when I was about 14 and it gave me nightmares about being trapped with fire.

message 175: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 181 comments Mod
I agree, Valerie. The part with the flame thrower scaring the horses is pretty intense.

Your turn!

message 176: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (veegood) | 85 comments ok. I beg your indulgence til the morning (it's currently 10pm) and I will have a new clue for you then.

message 177: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) | 35 comments I'll start this quiz again.

The book I'm currently reading has an explosion which destroys a grandstand.

message 178: by Sue (new)

Sue (suerreal) | 13 comments I believe that would be Dead Heat.

This plot includes the protagonist pretending to be an actor, a brief correspondence with a wise woman, and stunning scenery.

message 179: by Julie (new)

Julie | 18 comments It's Decider, not Dead Heat for the explosion in the grandstand.

The protagonist pretending to be an actor... is The Edge.

message 180: by Sue (new)

Sue (suerreal) | 13 comments Correct on The Edge. I'm thinking there may be more then one book with a grandstand explosion. :)

message 181: by Julie (new)

Julie | 18 comments You are right, of course, about Dead Heat.

One of the suspects grows batwillows.

message 182: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) | 35 comments I'll start this quiz again (don't know the answer to Julie's question about batwillows).

In which novel is the protagonist kidnapped and kept in a dark place not once, but twice? First time on a boat, second time in a cargo van.

message 183: by Julie (new)

Julie | 18 comments It was Risk - Roland Britten, accountant.

(Batwillows is from Wild Horses.)
