Hey everyone, my name is Maria and I have two children; my son is 11 and my daughter is 10. I am an avid reader and trying to help my children find the love I have for reading. My daughter is a little easier to "shop" for and even though she hasn't found the LOVE of reading, still enjoys it. My son on the other hand, is a VERY different story. We have the hardest time finding books that he may enjoy. The last series he read that he really liked, and continues to read over, is Diary of a Wimpy Kid . He also began to enjoy the Warrior Series Into the Wild but said it became too repetitive and he didn't finish the series. I JUST got him Hatchet at his request, so we shall see.

Hi Maria, a lot of tween boys enjoy Holes by Sachar (I think) and Hoops by Myers. My first book Lola Zola and the Lemonade Crush is also fun for tween boys.

Hi, Maria. Welcome to the group. Your son sounds a lot like mine. He loves the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and felt the same as your son about the Into the Wild series. He loved Hatchet, which he had to read for school. He enjoys graphic or partially graphic novels and prefers them to books without pictures. Chapter books he has enjoyed include Peter and the Starcatchers series, Wonder, Masterminds, and the Harry Potter series.

Hi, everyone. As a veteran middle school teacher, I am always thrilled when parents are on the hunt for titles to keep the imagination sparking. I bought my son Hatchet and so far he has really enjoyed it. I saw that Gary Paulsen had written two other books with the same boy in it, so we may look into those. I also bought Masterminds on several recommendations. I'll update ya'll once he starts it. Usually, if he likes the first chapter, then we are good. Otherwise, the book was a bust, LOL!

I hope he likes them. Kids can be so unpredictable in their reading tastes.

So, I found The Lost Hero and my son is FINALLY devouring a book. We went shopping today for a few school items and he actually brought the book with him. When I went into a store to browse for myself, he asked to return to the car to read. Of course, I said YES!!!

There is just nothing better than that! Excellent to hear!!

Hi, my name is Paul and I am father to an 11 year old boy. He loves to read and has dyslexia. We have made great strides this year and he is reading at grade level. My wife and I also read to him every night. Always looking for books to read to him and also for him to read. Like others here, I try to find books that are sincere and ultimately optimistic. I am a big fan of the Squires Tale series by Gerald Morris and I tell everyone that if you get through the first two you are in for a treat!

Fuzzy Mud
This book is just out and it's a winner!! My 5th grade daughter and I listened to the audio. Fantastic story!! Lots of unexpected Science and Math weaved into the story. Great stuff!

It is good. Our reading bowl team read it last year and loved it.

Hi Diane! It is disappointing how inactive this group is, but life is busy I know. My daughter loved the Fablehaven series. Currently, she is reading the Land of Stories series and can’t get enough of it.

Hi Diane in Montana and others who follow this thread! It is too bad there hasn't been much activity on here lately, maybe it will make a come back with current parents of tweens. Have you tried checking the 'lists' for new ideas? Most are categorized by age and genre. Two of my favorite reads are THE WAR THAT SAVED MY LIFE and its sequel. I write, read, and review a lot of middle-grade books if you or anyone else would like to connect as Goodreads 'friends.'

It's great to see this group active again. I am here as an author and a reader of MG fiction.

Always looking for exciting and deeper type of books for this age group and my reading pleasure.

I co-wrote a martial arts adventure story that is based on the true stories of kids and parents I know running a real life dojo in Toronto Canada within a mental health clinic. It has a lot of realism growing up as a tween with Learning Disabilities mixed with fantastic and historical lore of samurais and ninjas.

The sequel is wonderful, more of the same good story to love, although the first book is still my favorite.

Hi everyone! My name is Morgan. (My author pen name is M.L. Tarpley.) I write quirky lower middle grade novels that are set around the world. I love reading newer MG like The Tapper Twins and Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library and revisiting the beloved books of my childhood such as Mr. Popper's Penguins, the American Girl series and The Phantom Tollbooth. My first MG novel will be published this fall.

Hi, I'm Carrie and I have a 12 year old daughter. I still read a night to her, unless it's a later night going to bed and we still have story time randomly in the days, unless other things are going on. She isn't as avid as I am but she has her favorites and can get lost in them.

We watch booktube together and try to participate in the random readathons that they host either there or on twitter. I don't let her use goodread due to the content of some books that people read. I'm not about to explain some of the taboo subjects yet. 😂
