Elizabeth (Alaska) OK, how do all of you do it?

Elizabeth (Alaska) I'm retired. I don't know if that means I get to read more (or less) than the rest of you. BUT, just now I find myself with more and more group reads, and figuring out a way to juggle them and still get them done is a challenge in itself.

I have a spreadsheet for one of my challenge groups. I set up a shelf on My Books for Upcoming Group Reads. But then earlier this week I decided I needed to see how I was going to fit my ambitious reading load into the alloted time, so I downloaded a calendar to use in Word and started filling in titles.

Viola | 1014 comments I'm not that ambitious. I just have a "To Read" list here on GR. I don't even keep it in order. I pick my next book mostly on a whim, whatever I feel like. I also try to make sure to read interesting books for my in-person book club. That's about it.

I work full-time and have a toddler... (so sad that I can't say baby anymore). I commute to work on the train, and that is my reading time. Not a whole lot every day, but it's very consistent and I love having that time for myself.

So, now I guess, I know why you can get through 100+ books a year. I think I read a lot at a measly 30.

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 4853 comments I am somewhat like Viola in my book reading habits.I am a dermatologist and have stead office-timings and am free in the evenings. I do get to read atleast 2-3 hours a day, though, as my son is now 8 going on 9 and doesnot require much attention.
I participate in only one, or at the most, two group reads in a month.

Sherin Punnilath (shery_7) | 3158 comments As a software engineer,I have flexible timings(Except for the occasional busy schedule). So sometimes I read late and go to office late.. ;)

I always keep a book in my purse.Quite handy in Bangalore traffic jams.It could be different from the one I read @home..er..hostel.

There will be an ebook open @ my office desktop everytime. Can read while waiting for application loading &all that.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I don't drive so I read when I am waiting for my rides. I also read on my breaks, and when I get home and on the weekends. I bring a book with me to the doctor appts. I read all the time.

Rebecca I know Elizabet trying to figure out how to read Bleak, Mutual, and Daniel they are all pretty long pages and heavier reading.

And here I've got Frankenstein and Gilead.

I'm going to wait until late November to start the Dickens reads.

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) | 208 comments I do it by reading more than one book at a time so I always have something on hand to read. And I try to capture every moment I can.

Yesterday was homecoming for my older two kids, and they were both marching in band for the parade. The weather was *awful*, and as I was sitting in the car waiting for the parade to show up, I got out my phone and used the Kindle app to read a few pages. I've also been known to read at the checkout line in the store.

Elizabeth, I am *really* impressed that you are so organized about your reading.

Could we do Gilead as a buddy read too?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Gilead is CoL's club read for November starting November 15, so there will be a regular discussion of it. I've really wanted to read this for awhile and it fits one of the tasks on this quarter's challenge at Reading With Style.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Thanks, Michelle. The spreadsheet for my challenge group is a real necessity and I've been doing it ever since I started with the group last year. There are many ways to get "points". Not like it's a competition, but there's just a lot to keep track of. But it seems as if there are more enticing group reads of late and I was driving myself crazy worrying about whether/when/how they were all going to get done.

Sometimes, Viola, I wish I would just let things go for awhile and not have everything so "planned"; that I could approach this hobby with a better laissez-faire attitude. Are there such things as late in life personality changes?

I've always wanted to participate in a challenge, but have never done it. I always seem to get stuck on one or two books.

Elizabeth (Alaska) This one is a bit different. Each challenge runs 3 months, Dec-Feb, Mar-May, Jun-Aug, Sep-Nov. You can read for all of the tasks, or only a few. For most of the tasks, you can repeat as often as you want. Looking to see how the books you want to read anyway might fit the tasks, or looking for books you might not have heard about is part of the fun. I wouldn't post info about another group here, except that it in no way takes away from Chicks. We get to know each other through what we read, but not much else.

Christine | 1311 comments I just read what I can in the time I have. I have 2 kids still at home but they both play sports so after work I'm usually picking up, dropping off, cooking etc. I have a 45 minute commute so I have been listening to a few Books on CD lately which I love. Makes my drive so much better.
I would love to do challenges but my time devoted to reading is so inconsistent that it would be unfair to the rest of the group if I committed then didn't hold up my end of the bargain.

Terri ♥ (aka Mrs. Christian Grey) (mybookboyfriend) | 149 comments I listen to audio books most of the time like on my commute to work or if I'm doing a repetitive task at work that doesn't require much concentration. I find now that I prefer audio books because I can also listen while I clean the house.
