Char | 17459 comments I'm like Bill. I thought I had no need for a Kindle, plus...I'm such a geek..I like to look a the cover, I even like the smell of books!
Then I got the Kindle3G as a reward point thingy from work and I haven't picked up a regular book since.

I like the look of the Fire and I like all the things it is supposed to do. What I don't like is that it is backlit. I think this would be a real problem for my eyes, so I'm sticking with my old one.

Shannon (ShannonCinderz) | 47 comments This is helpful to hear from all of you. It appears that I am looking for the back lighting so I can read in darker environments, but if there is no feature to dim the lighting to my liking then that would be a bummer. I am trying to get away from having to use a clip-on light, which I need to do with a book now. A Kindle would make reading easier no matter which model I go with, but "adjustable lighting" would make it a definite preference. So, do any of you know if there IS such an e-reader that has this feature?

I looked at the product page, but I don't see anything. Here is a link to it, though...it could be that I'm just not seeing it.

I read on my iPad using the Kindle app as I tend to have time to read only in the evenings. The screen brightness is adjustable within the app itself, and you can switch between a white, sepia, and black background depending on the lighting. I only use the black background while reading in bed so I don't disturb my wife's sleep.
I would bet the Kindle Fire will have similar options, and if I didn't already have an iPad that would be my choice. But if you plan on reading in any sort of bright areas, or outside the e-ink kindles can't be beat!

Shannon (ShannonCinderz) | 47 comments LOL Trixie. I am wishing I COULD be good.

Thanks for the feedback on the lighting issue. Funny how there is no mention of anything to do with lighting on any of these models. I have just basically decided on the Kindle Fyre because it has everything I could ever need and cheaper than an iPad!

But bottom line is, with any technology, they'll constantly issue the NEW IMPROVED SUPER-DUPER YOU-CAN'T-MISS-THIS-ONE... so I may as well get the newest to hold me for a while. :D

I ended up getting a Kindle Fire, it's very easy to change the brightness while your reading. It's just the settings icon at the top of the screen. It does modify that setting for the entire device instead of just within the book but its easy enough to change.

David (davidd) | 6 comments Well, so far I'm loving the Kindle Fire. I did not think I would like reading from an LCD screen but the ipad changed my mind. I've been reading on the ipad Kindle app for some time and love it. The Fire is better for reading though in my opinion because of its size and the text is much crisper. If you don't mind reading off an LCD screen and you use Amazon for your book purchases it doesn't get any better. If you prefer the e ink screens(which I use when lighting is an issue) you may not like it. So far for me its the perfect reading device. The streaming Amazon Prime movies look excellent on it too!

David (davidd) | 6 comments oh, forgot to add I used the free Goodreads app on my Kindle Fire to write these posts :)

Shannon (ShannonCinderz) | 47 comments Thank you SO much for your feedback on the Kindle Fire, David. It makes my decision to buy so much easier. I was also impressed with everything else it offers for pleasure, like those movies. My only concern will be how long battery life will be with regular use. But I am guessing the overnight change (as with cell phones) ought to do the trick if it is an issue.
I am so excited to finally have one, in about 2-3 weeks. I am hoping for another great SALE just before Christmas, when I can afford the purchase.
Glad you're enjoying it more than the iPad. That's even more great news!

Carl I. | 608 comments I finally got to play with Fire today!!! They had a floor model at Target so I decided to put it through the paces a bit. My verdict is that someday I will get my mitts on one, but I am going to wait for the second wave. I'm not much for being an early adopter to begin with, so it was easy for me to talk myself out of it. There were a few little things about it that I wasn't crazy about, as it seemed to get wrapped up a bit and slowed down easy. Granted, I do not hold this 100% against the Fire. It was a store model, so I am sure it has already been put through Hell. The screen was already nasty even. Earlier I tried one of the new $79 models, and even that thing was a mess and slower than tar in January. I did like it quite a bit, though. I just decided that my Christmas money would end up going to the upgrade on the recording program I use that was just released, and a set of nice noise cancelling headphones.

Shannon (ShannonCinderz) | 47 comments Thumbs up for those headphones, Carl. I will need a nice pair for music and movies eventually.
What recording program are you using, and for what? I am out of the loop ;)

Thanks Scott, I'm glad to hear it charges fairly quickly but how long the charge will last is likely individualistic. I will soon find out! =)

David (davidd) | 6 comments Hi Shannon
I continue to be impressed with the Fire but by no means does it mean i don't love my ipad too! As far as reading i will use the Fire only. I use my iPad for a lot of other things though, including as a sketch pad for my work. I find the reviews that compare the ipad to the fire frustrating. They are completely different devices, and both damn good. As far as reading, for me this thing (Fire) is the best
