John Kolsun (johnkolsun) | 3 comments I second Preacher by Garth Ennis.

Also, Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis.

Third suggestion, Y The Last Man.

message 6: by Cait (new)

Cait (tigercait) | 1 comments Oh, I definitely second Bayou!

I'd also like to throw Batman Year 100 and Phonogram, Volume 2: The Singles Club into the ring, if I may.

message 8: by Slayerscott (new)

Slayerscott | 10 comments I'm going to second Ordinary Victories, because I've read most of the other stuff. I haven't read "From Hell" but we did Watchmen already so maybe a different author. I haven't read Bayou or Phonogram so I'd like those as well.

Mike (paranoidmike) 1) Preacher vol 1
2) Transmet vol 1
3) Y vol 1

It's unfortunate when a lot of the choices have (Vol. 1) after them. A lot of these, particularly the Vertigo choices, are long- form novels that took 60- 75 comic books to play out. By only reading Vol. 1, you're essentially just reading the first chapter of a longer story. Has a comic-reading book club ever gotten to "Vol. 2" on anything?

message 11: by Mike (new)

Mike (paranoidmike) For me, I thought that the last vote asked for a specific book in a series, and I assumed it would be too hard to dive directly to say vol 4 or 7 (even if they're the best one) of a series, if some folks have never started the series.

Matt Hey everyone!

Like I think Eric is, I'd be keen to read something standalone rather than part of a longer series - perhaps things like Preacher, Transmet etc could be read slowly in full and discussed in a separate group? I might even have a go at making said group - watch this space!

Don't get me wrong, I think they're great books, but the time and monetary commitment for those who haven't read them is pretty big.

Also, at the risk of sounding like a pretentious twat, I wonder if superhero novels leave that much to discuss. Again, I own and love many superhero TPBs and novels (including all of those listed above) and I know there are exceptions, but many of them simply don't have the depth of non-superhero novels and discussion around them would probably be more along the lines of what that writer did with the character rather than what was the deeper meaning etc. I guess it's a case of stories vs literature. Ugh, I hate myself for even writing that, but hopefully you guys know what I'm getting at.

Again, sorry if I sound like a snob here - I love Batman books too. I guess I'd just rather things stayed along the lines of Black Hole, which was a great first choice.

Here are some books I've been meaning to get around to reading:

A Contract With God
Asterios Polyp
Blankets
The Salon
X'ed Out (Charles Burns again)

And I'd be equally keen for Ordinary Victories, From Hell, Bayou or American Born Chinese. Even Phonogram Vol 2 would be cool as it's standalone and short, with lots to unpack.

All of that said, if the majority are keen for Preacher or whatever I'm in! Just my 1 cent worth :)

Has the second part of X'ed Out come out yet? There are to be three altogether. The first one is great, but again, only part of a story.

message 14: by Matt (new)

Matt Ah, I didn't realise that! Flag that one then :)

message 15: by Wouter (new)

Wouter Maybe something current, like the new C. Thompson: Habibi. Also Wouldn't mind reading Blankets again! Another favorite of mine: Paul Rabagliati's Paul series.

message 16: by Tracey (new)

Tracey I'd like to read Habibi also...

message 17: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Bochenski (toothcake) | 1 comments I agree with not going the Volumed route. Having only a part of one story doesn't make for good discussion. With some people having read the entire series, and others only reading Vol. 1... where does the discussion lead too?

I want to read Blankets..

I would recommend something such as Ghost World, From Hell, Footnotes in Gaza, or Maus
