Jason wrote:Hmm The Gunslinger is a little odd to me, since it the first Stephen King book I've read that is continued to a second book. Nothing big (big as in Stephen King big) happened in the book. It almost feels like I'm watching the premier episode of a new tv series or Chapter 1 of a really thick book.

But I still loved it. I love how we learn about Roland's past in flashbacks (sort of like how the TV series Lost did it). But the book did raise a few questions for me though which I hope will be answered in later books. Especially Jake, he's like an enigma to me. Overall I loved it, but not as much as the other King books. I heard it gets much much better from The Drawing of the Three onwards.

It gets much better The Drawing of the Three was probably my favorite one out of all the them well maybe The Dark Tower.. either way those two are close! The series tho is my favorite series ever! Although I kind of felt like you did when I read the Gunslinger I was like um.. ok.. good book but what is all the hype about?

Todd, I'm listening to Bag of Bones as an audio book and it's read by Stephen King himself. I read it years ago so I'm really enjoying getting familiar with it again.

Bill I have two mysteries on the go at the moment, Blind Fury by Lynda La Plante, a DI Anna Fraser police mystery and The Serpent's Tale, the second in Ariana Franklin's Mistress of the Art of Death mysteries, set during the time of Henry II. Both very interesting so far.

Susan Gottfried (westofmars) | 2 comments I need to pick up the new Anita Diamant for my book club... yeah, she who wrote The Red Tent. This is her fourth book out now -- I just checked and it came out in 2009!! What sort of time warp have I been living in??? Anyway, it's called Day After Night, and I'm eager to see what it's about.

Linda, I just saw your message to let you know about A Discovery of Witches - well, I read about 30% of it and gave up. It's weird that I can totally believe all the strange things Stephen King writes about but for some reason I just cannot get into the concept of witches, vampires, and ghouls living among us as "normal" people :) I know lots of people have loved this book though, it's just not my genre, but at least now I can say I've tried.

message 78: by Jason (new)

Jason Tan Just finished 'Salem's Lot as part of the buddy reads for this group :D Loved the book from the beginning. The book is written in such a way that the town comes alive as you go along the book. The ending is OK, but I thought an author with the King's calibre would've written a much much better ending. Overall a good read.

Just got my copy of The Litigators (released today) and I'll be reading it tonight :D

I LOVED this book! Cannot WAIT till the second one comes out!

message 80: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) I JUST finished up Fanny Hill, & found myself really glad I read it. I was hesitant because it's 18th century porn, but it was delightful. Fanny tells it like it was, LOL, & her adventures really made me laugh, as did her descriptions & terms used. The touching part is that she never forgot her first love Charles, & the book has a happy ending too.

Now I'm into The Black Dahlia, which I found a trifle tough to get into, but once it got going, it's really good. Those who like the whole true crime or murder mystery genre will like this one, especially since it's a true case that was never solved.

The Red Tent is one of my all time favorite. Please let me know if her others are as good. I hate that when a writers first book is great and then the others are not as good...think The Time Travelers Wife ..her second book ugh!!

I gotta say I was very happy with the movie. They did a good job with the actors playing the characters and kept pretty close to the story line! I don't think you'll be disappointed!
