Not read a lot in the past two weeks between my son's teething and my being sick. Still, back into the swing of things now and just about finished:

Dragon Haven (Rain Wild Chronicles, #2) by Robin Hobb

A good follow up to the first book in the series with all of the wonderful (great characters, fantastic worldbuilding, lovely prose) and the not-so wonderful (slow pace) of a Robin Hobb novel.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Don't throw eggs or rotten tomatoes for those of you who read 11/22/63. I wasn't enjoying this book which I found odd wince I do like Stephen King and was almost forcingm yself to continue reading this book. And after a week I was only on page 60 which is also unusual so I made an excutive decision and will be choosing my next book today.

Alice Hoffman's "The Dovekeepers"

Alena (alenam) Eileen wrote: "Alice Hoffman's "The Dovekeepers""

I really enjoyed it. Of course I really like her and I'm a huge historical fiction fan so those factors help. Hope you enjoy it too.

message 215: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Once again, I'm in the minority. Alice Hoffman along with Anne Tyler and Alice McDermott are among my fave authors of contemporary lit. So when I heard that Hoffman was writing an HF book about Masada and three women I couldn't wait. Well, for me this book was very disappointing. And ironically I have studied about Masada and taught about it and even climbed it on several occasions. I thought it was overwritten and I never really felt anything for the characters.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Where is everybody here? It's been awfully quiet. C'mon and make some noise. I'm lonely.

I am currently listening to Red Hook Road by Ayelet Waldman who is the wife of Michael Chabon, also an author. I find this book sad but well written. Curious as to how it will end.

I am also going to choose a book for my I PAD and a regular book We are off to Florida next week so I think I will rely on my I PAD only.

I met and heard Lee Child this past Fall at an author's day. He is from England, which I never knew, and is quite funny. People who enjoy his books are referred to as Reacher Creatures. I am hoping to rad his first book real soon.

Highly recommend his books. Killing Floor was wonderful so now I've been doing some catching up. I'm now on number 13 or is it 14. Anyhoo, don't delay.

Still reading The Dovekeepers (almost to part 2) and also have two titles to review for Women's Lit Cafe. Finished and reviewed a book about tuberculosis--surprisingly good and readable.

message 230: by Bill (new)

Bill Just finished The Riverside Villas Murder by Kingsley Amis and enjoyed it very much; an intersting story and mystery. 4 stars. I'm almost finished Plan for Chaos by John Wyndham, which I've been enjoying very much. I'm about to start Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld, which looks like an entertaining read and will start Long Way Round: Chasing Shadows Across the World by Ewan McGregor next.

There are many characters but I grew to love them and was thoroughly enchanted by this book. Hang in there.

message 244: by Jillyn (new)

Jillyn I both received and finished Chopsticks by Jessica Anthony today. It's really unique. There's almost no words, it's mostly pictures, ticket stubs, instant messages... It's pretty cool.

Now back to The Reeducation of Cherry Truong by Aimee Phan unfortunately. It's taking me so long to get into it.

message 245: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

I am now reading "Defending Jacob" after finishing "The Dovekeepers" (loved it) and an indie, "Dead Red Heart," which I called sassy.

I didn't like the Stieg Larsson books at all, and I put King's 11-22-63 into my abandoned folder. I thought I would love that. hmmmm

OK - I'll give you my two cents- I couldn't get into any of The Girl books although I enjoyed the Swedish films but not the American one. I also abandoned 11/22/63 temporarily but hope to go back to it when I have a bit more patience. As for The Dovekeepers, I really wanted to enjoy this book since I generally love all of Hoffman's books but I didn't.

message 250: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) I just finished both The Temple of My Familiar by Alice Walker, as well as The Optimist's Daughter, by Eudora Welty.

Currently Reading, in no particular order:

The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test-Tom Wolfe. I am having a heck of a time even connecting with it, finding myself blocked & unmotivated to go on around page 60 :(

Midnight's Children-Salman Rushdie. Having read & absolutely DETESTED every other book of his I've read, I'm glad THIS one has actually started off making SENSE. I'm just waiting for that to change though, LOL.

The Great American Medicine Show-David & Elizabeth Armstrong. It's an illustrated history of medicine in America from "Plymouth Rock to the Present". Focuses on medicine treatments etc that were fads, like patent medicines, radical treatments, homeopathy, traditional healers, herbals, things like that, & how they relate to today's medical practices. Completely fascinating so far, if you appreciate history!
