Sheila | 20 comments Hello, all
I've just joined. I love crime and mystery novels, particulary "Tartan Noir" author Denise Mina, Kate Atkinson and the Scandinavians (though not all that wild about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series). Thrillers, not so much.
I love a book that makes me think as well as keeps me on the edge of my seat.
I write as well as read, and I'll be posting in the Authors section soon about the Giveaway for my new literary mystery, The Girl in the Box

Hi Sheila, thanks for joining the group. I liked the first of the Millennium books, but the other two left me a little cold. Have to try the other Scandinavians soon.

Good luck with your book.

Thanks, Hayes. There's a woman writer from Denmark I particularly enjoy, can't remember her name right now, big help!
What I like about the Scandinavians is the character development, and often the writing style is just as good as any "literary" novel, without sacrificing suspense or plot. ("Literary", that much contested term, just means "excellent, above average writing" to me.)
I guess I've always been interested in the workings of the human mind and heart, and if it's combined with an exciting crime and well-crafted plot, all the better.

Hi, Denise. I enjoy psychological suspense! I'm going to take a look at your website. Will you be doing a Goodreads giveaway?

Of course I don't mind if you add it to your site! Thank you. I will return the favour once I figure out how. My web designer does everything for me. I'm hopeless.
Giveaways are easy to set up. Just click on "explore" at the top, choose "giveaways" and then "create a giveaway."
Good luck!

Welcome Sheila. I love the phrase "Tartan Noir".

Me too! A colleague at the library where I work said she was going to put up a display of "Tartan Noir" books. I had no clue what she was talking about until she told me it was Scottish mysteries of a certain type. That's how I learned one of my fave authors, Denise Mina, was a "Tartan Noir" writer.

Beth | 408 comments Welcome, Sheila! Funny, a fellow mystery author just recommended Denise Mina to me at a meeting of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of Mystery Writers of America this week. Word about her is spreading! I'm afraid she might be a little too dark for me, though. My tastes lie more on the cozy/soft-boiled end of the spectrum.

Hi Beth. I don't find Mina too dark, but I don't really like cozies, so perhaps people who like one wouldn't like the other? Hard to say, though.

M. Myers (mruth) | 100 comments Hi, Sheila. You're going to have great fun here ... or as a friend of mine put it, "spend way too much time". But how can one ever spend too much time on mysteries, right?

Hi, M. Thanks for the note. I only like certain kinds of mysteries. I don't read tons. I have my favourites. Good thing, too, because I also like good novels. I'd never fit any in if I kept reading mysteries!
But the mysteries I do love I can't get enough of!
