Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments December is floating theme month, so please nominate themes you'd like us to read.

Examples:
Debut novels
Stand Alone Fantasy Novels
Hugo award winners
Post Apocalyptic fantasy

And so on. Have at it.

Nominations will be open thru Friday midnight. After that I will post a poll.

Seconds are required!

message 2: by Seth (new)

Seth Having just read Mark Lawrence, I would like to see some more Debut novels from new Fantasy writers.

Let's see if we can find a new Lawrence, or Martin.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments I'll nominate: First In A Series.

message 4: by Raquel (new)

Raquel (corusca) Post Apocalyptic fantasy seems like an interesting choice.

message 5: by Jasmine M (new)

Jasmine M | 110 comments Seth wrote: "Having just read Mark Lawrence, I would like to see some more Debut novels from new Fantasy writers.

I second that...I've just read the most amazing debut book...couldn't even believe it's the author's first

message 6: by Seth (new)

Seth Which book did you just read that was so awesome debut book?

message 7: by Tish (new)

Tish | 46 comments I second that...I've just read the most amazing debut book...couldn't even believe it's the author's first ..."

Don't leave us hanging like that, Jasmine! What's the name of this amazing debut book?

message 8: by Lilyan (new)

Lilyan Books with winter settings, or centered around a winter theme, since it's winter :D. Is such a vote even legit? OR! Christmas theme

message 9: by Irina (new)

Irina (white_owl) Raquel wrote: "Post Apocalyptic fantasy seems like an interesting choice."

I second the Post Apocalyptic fantasy choice

message 10: by E.W. (new)

E.W. Saloka I agree with Lilyan, If I may. Something fitting with the season.

message 11: by Ab (new)

Ab I second the winter theme.

message 12: by Max (new)

Max I second Winter, or, if that isnt possible, post-apocalyptic.

message 13: by Jean (new)

Jean Hontz (majkia) I like the idea of debut novels as well.

message 14: by Mark (new)

Mark Meyers (markmeyers) Fantasy Masterworks or Hugo winners

message 15: by Jesslyn (last edited Oct 18, 2011 09:51AM) (new)

Jesslyn (jesslynh) | 24 comments Just to be contrary: dystopian fantasy

Although I just read a couple of very good ones. (NOT named Mockingbird)

message 16: by Jean (new)

Jean Hontz (majkia) I like the idea of a winter theme but can only think of one book that would work!

message 17: by Craig (new)

Craig (nipo) Lilyan wrote: "Books with winter settings, or centered around a winter theme, since it's winter :D. Is such a vote even legit? OR! Christmas theme"

I was thinking Christmas theme as well but couldn't find any good books for it :(. Winter theme is a wonderful idea

Mark Lawrence (marklawrence) | 117 comments Seth wrote: "Having just read Mark Lawrence, I would like to see some more Debut novels from new Fantasy writers.

Woops - misread & thought we were nominating books. Time to edit :) OK - I second or third Debuts!

message 19: by Tacuazin (new)

Tacuazin I am in the mood for some Post Apocalyptic fantasy. I'll second it.

message 20: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Dawn wrote: "I don't know if it's really a theme but I'd like something funny. I've been reading alot of deep dark fantasy and I'd like something lighter and brighter."

Well any of the themes include lighter and brighter books, except perhaps apocalyptic. So that wouldn't be a theme, I don't think.

Winter theme is fine, if there are any books that fill that description. Can anyone think of any?

message 21: by Jean (new)

Jean Hontz (majkia) Nights of Villjamuris set in deep winter, so that would fit.

message 22: by Detelina (new)

Detelina Lilyan wrote: "Books with winter settings, or centered around a winter theme, since it's winter :D. Is such a vote even legit? OR! Christmas theme"

Winter theme - I vote for that !!!

And do you have any books in mind for that theme? Because I can't think of any.

message 24: by Marcin (new)

Marcin Wrona I'd love a Hugo winner.

message 25: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Marcin wrote: "I'd love a Hugo winner."

Second.

message 26: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments SPAM AND SELF PROMOTION IS NOT APPROPRIATE HERE. I just deleted that kind of post.

message 27: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 282 comments I am going to go with Hugo-nominted

message 28: by atmatos (last edited Oct 18, 2011 01:49PM) (new)

Midwinter by Matthew Sturges or Winter Warriors by David Gemmell for a Winter time of life pun.
:)

message 30: by Detelina (new)

Detelina A Song of Ice and Fire and Hogfather are wintery too.

message 31: by Natasa (new)

Natasa (natasalikes) Nominating first in a series

message 32: by Teddy (new)

Teddy Marcantel I'm throwin' my hat in for Post Apocalyptic Fantasy.

message 33: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Jesslyn wrote: "Just to be contrary: dystopian fantasy

I think Post Apocalyptic covers dystopian.

message 34: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Just to remind you all, we're NOT VOTING HERE. Just NOMINATING. If you want to SECOND a nomination, that's fine. But there are no votes being counted. That will be done in the POLL, to be set up later.

I too am intrigued :)

And I'm finding the winter theme rather amusing considering the part of the world where I live is heading towards summer, but...the vast majority of Christmas carols talk about snow, so I don't have a problem with reading about snow while walking around in shorts and a t-shirt complaining it's hot *grin*

message 36: by York (new)

York (yorkrg) How about something like "Hard fantasy," I tend to like hard Sci Fi, but is there some designation similar to that? If not I also like the idea of "First in a series."
Thanks, this is my first post here.

message 37: by atmatos (new)

You asked if anyone can think or Wintery books, would you like us to message you with ideas instead?

message 38: by Magda (new)

Magda (magdaolchawska) In my personal opinion. Debut novels.

No, not at all. That post was directed at people who said 'I vote for _____' and the like. I asked if any could think of books appropriate to a winter theme because I couldn't think of any.

So wierd as I got the email when I was out and thought it would be great to read something wintery/Christmasy/Ghosty as befits the season. So "seconding" that too.

message 41: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Stockard Miller (michelleamiller) | 43 comments I agree with the Winter or seasonal theme.

message 42: by Trever (last edited Oct 18, 2011 01:05PM) (new)

Trever Wise (twise) We do not get snow in California, so a wintery theme sounds pretty cool. Get it, pretty cool. I just finished Red Seas Under Red Skies. The ending was quite a let down so how bout a winter theme without the darkeness usually associated with that.

message 43: by Jean (new)

Jean Hontz (majkia) looks like Cold Magic by Kate Elliot would also work for Winter theme (as would, of course, Pullman's Lyra books).

message 44: by Helen, I·ᴍ ɪɴ ᴛʜᴇ ʟɪʙʀᴀʀʏ (new)

Quite like the idea of Hogfather, though too early for books.

message 45: by Jesslyn (new)

Maybe I'm splitting hairs, but I thought dystopian was just anti-utopia, whether post-, pre- or non- apocalyptic.

Well, perhaps it will get a second.

message 47: by Jesslyn (new)

Jesslyn (jesslynh) | 24 comments Trever wrote: "We do not get snow in California, ..."

We DO get snow in California. That is one of our bragging rights as a state. We can go from beach to sunny desert to mountain snows within a single day's drive.

Just sayin'

Okay, to clarify. I do not get snow at my house in California. However, if we adopt a winter theme book, I will read some of it within glancing distance of the distant snow covered mountains while relaxing next to my pool.

message 49: by Sam (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) I like the stand alone theme. Would be nice to get to know some good autthors who know how to get straight to the point ;-)

message 50: by Jean (new)

Jean Hontz (majkia) We get snow in Florida as well! Well, flurries, every five or so years. :)
