*snicker*
Snow is a sore point with me as my sister keeps bugging me to go skiing. So I know EXACTLY how close I am to snow.

A stand-alone fantasy would be nice.

Mach | 116 comments What about Urban? i remember someone mentioning that this group never reads any Urban Fantasy.

Did someone mention Urban? It's not true that we never read urban fantasy. If you look at our bookshelf, we read War for the Oaks a while back. But this is not an urban fantasy group.

Being from Canada and about to enter winter, I eyed the "flag" link in your message... :)

message 56: by Paul (new)

Paul (paul_goodread) November's Tigana is a stand-alone novel. Maybe we can combine debut/stand-alone for December...

message 57: by Megan (new)

Megan (megan_d) I like the idea of winter as a theme. The start of summer seems like the perfect time to read a winter-y book!

message 58: by Chris (new)

Chris (chriswheth) Post Apocalyptic fantasy

message 59: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeljsullivan) Since December is wintery....how about a book that has some kind of tie in to Winter or snow or cold etc?

message 60: by Kevin (last edited Oct 19, 2011 04:14AM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments I would like to nominate Prequels.

message 61: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 530 comments I hope Post Apocalyptic does not win, because I know two different groups that did this theme, ended up doing the exact same book.

message 62: by Rosie (new)

Rosie Choiniere (rosiec) A book of the seasons!

message 63: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie I made the mistake of searching for "fantasy Christmas" on Amazon to look for books. After sifting through lots of half naked people I found a couple possibilities but no quality.

message 64: by mundiemom5 (new)

mundiemom5 | 6 comments Steampunk with a paranormal twist!

message 65: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Mundiemom5 wrote: "Steampunk with a paranormal twist!"

We did steampunk earlier this year.

message 66: by Darcey (new)

Darcey (dmaw) I'd prefer to avoid holiday themes, just because if you're not Christian, then you may be stuck reading a book that's hard to slog through (especially if a character or two goes very religious about Christmas).

Winter/snow/cold theme I like, or some feeling of "ending and rebirth" which is often what the winter months are about, with the coming of spring.

message 67: by Kedar (new)

Kedar (kedark) | 7 comments Hugo award winner sounds good to me!

message 68: by Jasmine M (new)

Jasmine M | 110 comments Tish wrote: "I second that...I've just read the most amazing debut book...couldn't even believe it's the author's first ..."

Don't leave us hanging like that, Jasmine! What's the name of this amazing debut book?"

sorry I was away..it was The Night Circus
a great book

message 69: by Ben (new)

Ben (benkaboo) Lilyan wrote: "Books with winter settings, or centered around a winter theme, since it's winter :D. Is such a vote even legit? OR! Christmas theme"

It's summer here in Oz.

message 70: by Phoebe (new)

Phoebe (theneveronlinechick) Really? I've never seen snow! What's it like? O.O ^.^

message 71: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Terrington (thewritestuff) I'm for debut novels!

message 72: by Madalyn (new)

Madalyn (madalynreads) Being from Michigan, I will have enough snow in my life soon enough, and really don't care to read about it.
A debut novel sounds good though! I have read some very good things about The Night Circus!

message 73: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Flanagan Dystopian post-apocalyptic fantasy!

message 74: by A. (new)

A. Rosaria I'll go for the Post Apocalyptic fantasy. Not to be gloomy but it's fitting to the current economic apocalypse that's incoming and will take most by surprise.

message 75: by Michael (new)

Michael (michaeljsullivan) Madalyn wrote: "Being from Michigan, I will have enough snow in my life soon enough, and really don't care to read about it.

Hey Madalyn....I'm also originally from Michigan (suburbs of Detroit) Michigan winters are pretty harsh because there is so much moisture in the air so I see your point.

I've also heard good things about the Night Circus.

We've started having snow here in the UK, everything comes to a stand still. The first time I struggled about in wellies and nearly froze my feet off. So last winter I bought proper snow boots by Sorel. Was lovely.

I love living in Metro Detroit, I hate the winters. Well, most of it.

message 78: by Jared (new)

Jared (JaredTWG) I'd like to (I didn't count, but) second the debut author nomination and throw in Epic or High Concept fantasy.

message 79: by York (new)

York (yorkrg) Janet wrote: "I'd like to (I didn't count, but) second the debut author nomination and throw in Epic or High Concept fantasy."

Yes!, that is probably what I was trying to say with "hard fantasy" high or epic fantasy.
Thanks

message 80: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Taylor (danielgtaylor) My votes for debut novels.

message 81: by Crystle (new)

Crystle I second (or third? idk) Dystopia!

Candiss (tantara) Dawn wrote: "I want to second comedy fantasy though other than Terry Pratchett I can't think of any books that fit the theme."

I love comedic fantasy! Other comedic fantasy authors: Christopher Moore, Robert Rankin, Robert Lynn Asprin, some of Roger Zelazny's work (such as Bring Me the Head of Prince Charming and its sequels), Tom Holt

Edit: I'll second second comedic fantasy.

message 94: by Leah (new)

Leah (leahsimon) I vote stand alone fantasy.

message 95: by Palle (new)

Palle Dixon (palle_the_great) I would also like to see Stand Alone Fantasy Novels

message 96: by Becky (new)

Becky Its also the time for the state fairs across the nation, oktoberfest, etc in Europe.

What if we did a carnival themed read? Carnival/Circus/Merrymaker ?

message 97: by Amy (new)

Amy (amybethmcg) Dystopian, but not post vombie/virus wolrd wipe out type.

message 98: by Tish (new)

Tish | 46 comments I second the nomination for a carnival/Oktoberfest theme--great idea and a little different from the usual!

message 99: by Kelly (last edited Oct 21, 2011 07:19AM) (new)

Kelly Flanagan I agree with Amy, I'm zombified enough with Halloween coming

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 772 comments I think stand alone fantasy novels are like the ROUSs, they don't really exist.
