Krakauer goes on to describe Franz as a healthy man who had spent the time following Alex’s death in nature, living in the desert near the Borrego badlands. The whole time, Franz waited for Alex to return until a hitchhiker finally arrived, having read of Alex’s death in Outside Magazine. He promptly drains a bottle of whiskey in an attempt to die, quits his church, and denounces religion.
