Stacy | 72 comments This is an old one. Read it in the late '70s. About a girl who was trying to find a missing necklace, maybe emerald. It was originally hidden in a stone lion in the front of someone's house (her aunt's?) but the stone lion has disappeared. The girl has an older, beautiful cousin names Carrisa or Clarice. I think there's swimming in a swimming hole.

Tess | 439 comments Is it part of a series? Could it be The Mystery of the Emeralds

message 3: by Stacy (new)

Stacy | 72 comments Tess, no, not a Trixie Belden, although I read all of those. This one was written, maybe in the 60's and was not a part of a series. Thanks though!

Stacy | 72 comments Here's more: they like to sit and play in a group of rocks that are naturally shaped like chairs. If I remember right, the stone that is used as a footstool is actually the stone lion.

Stacy | 72 comments I thought maybe a Phyllis A. Whitney mystery for kids, but her list of books doesn't match up. This might drive me crazy. Anyone? Anyone?

I'm assuming you checked out all the (thousands and thousands it seems) mysteries of Enid Blyton?

This seems almost too easy, but The Missing Emerald Necklace?

message 9: by Stacy (new)

Stacy | 72 comments Thank you Ann and Andria. I think that it is not by Enid Blyton. Do not recall there being anything English about this book (locations, names, spellings). I think that it was not The Missing Emerald Necklace. The cover looks wrong. Thank you for trying.

Haha, I had a feeling that one was just too obvious to be right! Ok, here's a long shot, but it's all I've found so far: The Secret of Peach Orchard Plantation. Don't know about the stone lion or the sister, but there's a lost emerald necklace, and maybe the Georgia plantation setting rings a bell?

message 11: by Stacy (new)

Stacy | 72 comments Andria I read a synopsis of The Secret of Peach Plantation. I don't think that's the one. That books has an emerald necklace found in a trunk. The book I read, if I remember correctly, has it found in the stone lion. It's partly burried and is the footstool of these natural furniture rocks that the kids play on. It sounds strange, but I think that someone out there must have read this book and recognize it? I checked it out from the library in about 1978. I think it was written well before then, in the 50's or 60's.

Stacy | 72 comments Here's a few other things I remember: the kids swim in a swimming hole. At one point the MC thinks she's found the stone lion in the swimming hole, but when they unearthed it, it was just a rock. Also the MC is very anxious to find the necklace because of some financial reason, like to help the aunt/grandmother or to help the older cousin Clarrisa/Clarice.
Thanks!

Hang in there! Someone will recognize it, eventually. My searches have turned up nothing, except that there are a surprising number of books that feature missing emerald necklaces! None that match your description, though, at least not that I could find. Good luck!
