Dan Ariely has some popular books about behavioral economics. I've read a short excerpt of one of his books, and it was interesting (though a bit too dumbed down for my taste).

Absolutely brilliant author - the books not half bad either!

I have just read Office Politics by Oliver James - felt a little lite.

I've always enjoyed Ben Anderson's documentaries, especially his Holidays in the Axis of Evil series. So far, I'm finding this book gripping and incredibly honest.

OOoo. Did I bump into you at the Big Read meet?
That was so much fun! Looking forward to the next one

Just a public announcement - the national library is doubling the loan amount again (16 Nov - 31 Jan 2014) and they seems to have bought a whole stack of new YA/adult books so do pop down to the library and have a look.
And for those wanting to be in the know (for new arrival books - you can check out http://newarrivals.nlb.gov.sg/ which is updated with the new books every Monday
Have a good weekend!

This is really helpful! Thank you!

I haven't been reading any actual books lately, outside of what I have to do for school, but I've been having fun with a piece of Harry Potter fanfiction called Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality. I can't really decide how to feel about it yet, but it's getting interesting (I'm around chapter 30).
I have just read Rider and Speaker and while those were not my cup of tea (and I believe the author is baying for my blood as we speak) have to support local publishing and local writers so do have a look - they are available in the public libraries

I'm new here. I'm rereading LOTR's The Fellowship of the Ring and wondering if I should carry on with Books 2 and 3. I find myself getting very stressed when the Company meets with obstacles!
Anyone here have any book recommendations for books/authors like Tolkien, Tom Holt, Jasper Fforde, Ali Smith, Neil Gaiman?

For something a little less heavy, why don't you try Neil Gaiman's "Ocean at the End of the Lane" - you could borrow the book or the audio book from the public library?

Ah, in that case you'll have to look out for the sequel to that this year.

The movie will have a different ending compared to the book - just thought I'll warn you there...

You might want to add The Silent Wife, The Woman Upstairs AND Apple Tree Yard as well to the TBR list....just saying... 1000 books is REALLY simple to achieve - 3 books a day for a year but if it's children books/coffee table books - easy peasy.

Try reading on your commute, Huey.
I've been making good progress by reading at lunch or whenever I need a short break from homework. Three full-size books in three days. I might be able to hit the 100 mark this year.
Recommended: Steelheart. Great fun. Easy read. Narrator gets a bit annoying at times.
Might be interesting: The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are - though I found it useless (my review is here) it talks about the very sort of stuff that people love to characterize Singaporeans as lacking: willingness to play, compassion, empathy and all that stuff. And it has fantastic reviews elsewhere, plus the author's given TED talks and appears all over the internet and whatnot. If anyone else from the group reads it let me know what you thought.

Especially it's more productive besides sleeping, stoning, reading newspaper and listening to music while you travel.

IMO, It's a quick read with a comic-book feel.
Nowadays i am reading other less heavy books like Murakami.
Murakami Haruki - Dance dance dance 42%.

Now enjoying the liberty & joy of selecting which book to read next. :)
Blessed day to all of you! :) Hopefully, the haze subsides.

In the month of March, I finished Fangirl and The book thief.
It has been fun reading different books back to back. It's like a read-a-thon without the series. :)

Moving on to Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. Anyone a fan of the Hannibal tv series?

Me! I really enjoyed season 1! I haven't found the time for season 2 tho. :/

Oh. It gets better.
Just reread Good Omens (on a trip to Cuba!) after four years - what a hilarious book. I didn't think much of it the first time round, perhaps because I'd been reading a poorly-formatted Kindle edition surreptitiously during lectures in JC; I'm glad I gave it a second chance.

Hey Jess
been sending you messages - did you get them?

1. The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway was a meandering story that went nowhere.
2. Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake was a slog through wet cement.
3. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon was probably the worst book that I've read in a long time.
Thankfully, I've found my footing once again. Went on to read Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny, which was a great blend of Buddhism, Hinduism, fantasy and science fiction. I'm currently on Stephen King's Different Seasons, and it always feels like coming home whenever I read King's works.

Recently finished reading Blossoms and Bayonets by Jana McBurney-Lin and Hi-Dong Chai!
I highly recommend it!

Like most, some of my big favourites were classics like Catcher in the Rye and Bell Jar. Any other recommendations, anyone?
