Thanks, Nathan. Now that you can file online, it is relatively painless. I recommend people do it the minute they finish their first draft. Even if the book you end up with is changed somewhat, it is still protected.
It takes the better part of the year to get your copyright, so the sooner the better.
I also recommend authors file for an LCCN number themselves. It helps a lot to get listed with certain sites and it has a lot more cred with libraries etc.
