Silver 10.5 - Underrated

White Truffles in Winter by N.M. Kelby

Review:

A charming, witty, and sometimes heartbreaking story about love, loss, endurance, and most importantly food!

I found this book thoroughly enjoyable to read. I have always found the culinary arts to be interesting, and think it can be fascinating the way in which throughout time food has been used within literature. One of the things which I really enjoyed about this book is the way in which throughout from beginning to end food is used to convey a story, to inspire emotions and evoke all of the senses. I found "The Complete Escoffier: A Memoir in Meals" particularly charming.

The books tells of the story of famous chef Escoffier and his great passion for both food and women, as he struggles between the two women whom hold his heart. His lover time lover, the notorious and outrageous actress Sara Bernhardt and his wife who he carried a deep and complex love for the poet Delphine.

As proof of his lover to her Delphine requests the one thing which Escoffier cannot give because of the very nature of his love for his wife. Delphine wants to be immortalized through food, and requests him to make a dish in her name. Throughout his career he has made dishes for countless famous personalities and countless dishes for his Sara, but whenever his wife asks he refuses. She believing it a sign that he has forgotten his love for her, but he finds it impossible to find any dish that is worthy of capturing her.

The story goes back and forth between the amusing episodes of Delphine as an old sickly woman trying to enable the help of their servant Sabine, to get Escoffier to make her a dish before she dies. Sabine is outspoken, and a notoriously bad cook, most noted for her resemblance to the famous Sarah. And the early days of Escoffier's life. His passion for Sarah, the devolvement of his career and his sorrows and joys.

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5272 comments After 3 days snowed in, I am in the great position of repeating tasks. I am still working on Bleak House (and that's what I'm reading), but it's an audio book that I will get back to soon. I can't read just one book at a time, so I've read a number of new books that I've wanted to fit into Sam's Task.

20.10 – Sam’s Task – Play the numbers

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, 2011 840 Lexile

This book is fantastic! Maggie Stiefvater follows up her successful werewolf trilogy with a unique fantasy story based on legends of the water horses which are horses like I’ve never read of before. The cover is deceiving. Yes, it is about a girl that races horses, but most of the horses in this race, the capaill uisce (water horses) are killers that rise from the sea to be trained for just one race each year, The Scorpio Races. In the race, not all riders survive. Told from the two points of view of Puck, the young girl who plans to ride in the race and who has lost both parents to the vicious beasts, and Sean, the current champion and trainer. Maggie Stiefvater’s writing is pitch perfect. Don’t miss The Scorpio Races!

Trapped by Michael Northrop

This was a bit freaky to take on during an unusually big storm in which we were house bound and without power. Seven students are left waiting for a ride at their high school as a severe blizzard moves in. When the teacher left in charge goes for help, they must fend for themselves to survive. The story is told by one of the students and the voice is realistic and the writing and plot certainly keeps the pages turning. Everything was convincing and plausible except for their phones staying charged for 3+ days! Mine was out by the end of one day. If you are looking for a quick read and like survival stories, this is a good one to pick up, but probably best to wait until any storms subside!

Beautiful Days by Anna Godbersen, 2011

No Lexile available but the lexiles are 990-1160 L for the author's first series, the Luxe Series, and it has a 6.7 AR rating, The Luxe has a 990 Lexile and 6.8 AR - let me know if I need to take away the extra points on this one.

This is the second book in a great story set in 1929 during prohibition begun in Bright Young Things. It follows a bootlegging family and a rising star trying to break into the New York stage scene. Beautiful Days is full of adventure, love, and danger and the nightlife of NYC in a fascinating era of history. Like Anna Godbersen’s first series, The Luxe, the fashion and atmosphere of the setting comes to life with the historical details. Women are just beginning to find independence in a male dominated world and Godbersen’s characters are realistic in their strengths and weaknesses. It’s a page-turner and I was rooting for the characters to make the right decisions and triumph over the adversity they faced, especially for Letty as she sought the limelight on the stage. The criminals are mean enough to keep things interesting, but the intrigue is more important to the telling than violence. Recommended for those who like Historical Romance.

The Third Secret by Steve Berry
Mostly in Vatican with main character travelling to Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, & Germany

It was a quick & easy thrilling read. I'm not quite sure what this type of thriller is called but I call it 'Vatican conspiracy'. Of which I'm sure it's all plausible, that there are many things being kept secret where certain personages will keep to the utmost of their ability to be kept secret from the world. Now, does that make me sound a little bit nuts?

To get back to the book, you will need an even more opened mind in that the "secret" refers to some revelations from apparitions of the Lady. I'm most sceptical about these apparitions to begin with but I could take it reading in a novel. It took up nearly the whole novel (I started to wonder whether the 'secret' will be kept vague & secret) before the 'secret' was revealed.

At the end, after a bit of thought, whilst it was good reading when it lasted but a bit of wishful thinking & wishy-washy for me. Definitely not on a re-read list for me.

The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins

I can't believe that it took me so long to read this book. The size has always been the issue but I realised now, that it shouldn't be. The language was pretty easy for a classic. So, if this is what stops you from reading it, don't let it stop you any longer!

I found the epistoraly-like narrative slightly disconcerting; the changes in narrators with their own styles of writing. However, other than a slightly unbelievable twist near the end, I thorough enjoyed the story for its genre.

Kelli Robinson (kellifrobinson) Task 20.3 Great Expectations (#79 on Exceeded Expectations List)

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

I generally do not read fantasy but I was drawn to the HBO series and watched it from start to finish. As Season 2 of the series approaches, I have a strong desire to read the second book prior to watching the season. I debated whether to read the first book, A Game of Thrones, before venturing into the second book. Being a purist at heart, I had to and I'm happy I did. My mind's eye, however, was forever set by the characters cast for the series and there was nothing I could do about it. The Cersei, Joffrey, Catelyn, Daenerys, Sansa, and Arya I imagined as I read the book where inexplicably linked to the series. I was also amazed at how well the series captured the entire story laid out in A Game of Thrones. If this is the Grey's Anatomy of fantasy series, as one other reviewer has referred to it, then please give me more McDreamy!

Silently and Very Fast by Catherynne M. Valente

Review:
An absolutely amazing and gorgeously written work. Told from the perspective of an Artificial Intelligence as it comes into itself as a being, this book explores what it means to dream, to feel, to just be. Elefsis describes herself and her world through the use of the dreamscape, metaphors and stories. She is the other and yet wholly herself. Just an incredibly stunning book that sticks with the reader long after the last page is turned. I would highly recommend it to lovers of fantasy, science fiction, or even for those just looking for a book that makes you reflect in turn upon yourself and what it means to be human as well as an individual.

Picknick am Wegesrand by Arkadi and Boris Strugatzki

Review:

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon
Lexile 1170

Review:
This is a roller-coaster of a book! Starting with Joe Kavalier's escape from Prague in 1939, it tells the story of his comic book writing partnership with his cousin Sam Clay in New York. In true comic book style, there are wild successes and failures, amazing escapes, comedy and heartbreak.
There were moments when I wondered where this was going but I am very glad I read it. In the end I think it is a story of relationships and the almost unbreakable elastic ties that link us to those we love, even when we have left them for many years. 4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.

Night of Knives by Ian C. Esslemont

Review : This is the first book in the Malazan Empire Series which is a companion series to the Malazan Book of the Fallen series which I just finished reading. This book takes place over one day and one night which shocked me quite a bit since the 10 books in the Malazan Book of the Fallen series span decades. I had trouble at first getting into this book as the writing style is quite different from the others. Esslemont really enjoys his adjectives (a little too much I think). There are two main characters and they are a little too cliché for my taste. One is an old military man running from his past but faced with what he has done at every turn, and the other is a young girl who aspires to be a spy and is a little too cocky and naive to be any good at it. This book is missing the epic flavour that the other Malazan books are known for and feels like it is one chapter in the story as opposed to the whole novel. I gave this book three stars and overall I am just happy to be able to continue reading about the Malazan Empire because it is such a great fantasy world.

I haven’t read too many of Vonnegut’s books, but every time I read one I wonder why not. Galapagos was great. I chose it in honor of my daughter’s recent trip to Ecuador. She didn’t get a chance to visit the island, but did bring back pictures of another island in the area known as the “poor man’s Galapagos Island”. The book’s premise is that all of the human race was wiped out and humans re-evolved when stranded on an island when the “Cruise of the Century” to the Galapagos Islands goes awry. The narrator “lives” as a ghost a million years in the future of the 1980s voyage and is trying to figure out humans and their very big brains which evolution has since altered greatly! The book is great fun. It’s full of astute observations about our behavior and quotes from literature both real and imaginary. Vonnegut also includes a computer and some predictions of the future of the computer and Internet (1985 copyright) that are surprisingly accurate. If you enjoy Kurt Vonnegut or want to give this author a try, Galapagos would be a good choice.

There were lots of Dickens quotes and references in this one, too!

Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, 2010
860 Lexile

If you’re still in the mood for some fun holiday reading and enjoy reading about New York City and off-beat romance with some twists (like I was and do), then pick up a copy of Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares and you won’t be disappointed. Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have teamed up for the third time and created an engaging story. Lily leaves a copy of a red notebook in the wonderful Strand Bookstore in New York. That alone let me know I was going to enjoy the book, because the notebook would be found by someone browsing the shelves in the area of Salinger’s Franny and Zooey, an old favorite of mine. Sure enough, I was treated to many literary quotes, read to from Dickens, and absorbed in the love of words that Dash, who found the notebook, had. The book was light and fun and I got to visit lots of places in New York City during the holiday season.

What a classic that so changed and influenced the world! Having been in the army, I recognized so many of the tactics and the training given in Basic, (minus the beheadings) is still used in the modern military. The book was written in approximately 500 BC and reminds us that before the first Roman Centurion Brigade stepped foot outside Rome, the Chinese had been expert warriors for years. If you are a military or history buff, you need to read this if you haven’t already. In every war the USA has ever engaged, I could think of major battles in which these tactics were successfully used or failures due to the type of circumstances the book warned against, and some battles that despite the odds and not following these ancient, sage rules of combat, the military was successful. Two being the Revolutionary Battle of King’s Mountain, in which the British held the higher ground and the Battle of Normandy that left the Allied troops sitting ducks in the water. These battles illustrate another point of Tzu, that if you put men in battle where they must fight to the death and have nothing to lose, especially if it is a cause they believe in, they have a fair chance of success despite all odds stacked against them. Surprisingly this book was easy to read. The edicts were sensible and clear and took no great brain power to figure out what situations Tzu meant. I gave it 5 stars. Me and a bunch of generals, I guess!

Carolyn I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this but here goes... I have been checking the reader board and noticed my name and points do not seem to be on there. I double checked my posts (#470, #503 and #561) and they all are within the range that have been calculated. Am I doing something wrong with the formatting or the posting? Please let me know. Thanks for all your hard work, I don't mean to be a pain but I figured I should ask now!

This book didn't score high enough for style points. It was only a 660. I am posting my review anyways. I am not sure if Jumbo points counts as style points.
